Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Finished Paul Griffiths pictures for now.
Heres a M A N seen on the A49 between Dorrington and Leebotwood, the other week.

G’day Dave,
seing as you posted some South Wales steel waggons,I wonder if you have heard of this mob or know anything about them,I’ve never seen any photos of their trucks.

She was a 6x4 flat,I took these in 1989 in Devon,I don’t think she would have been cut up as there were heaps of old trucks there waiting to be restored.
Cheers Jamie

Hi Jamie,
Can’t remember them, but could well have seen their lorries back in the sixties, used to run into Margam at Port Talbot, also tip loads anywhere in South Wales. Thanks for posting them, always good to see the pics where ever they are from.
Cheers Dave.

A nice Daf XF coming round the hairpins on the A44 on Plynlimon, between Aberystwyth and Rhayader, Mid Wales.

Picture of an Atki and a T45 Roadtrain, parked next to a FM Volvo tractor unit, taken at Robin C Conod’s garage at Leominster.

Hi Dave,
Being an ex valley boy, I’ll try to help you out here. Its not Ebbw Vale as they did not have cooling towers as shown, as Ebbw Vale was in a valley you would see the hills on either side.Being as big as Port Talbot works were I would say it was Margam.
I wonder if all the photos were taken at the same time. That structure in the background, could be the transporter bridge in Newport, and the river could be the one its crossing over.British Steel had a tin plate works down near the docks, perhaps that is where the load was pictured.
As for Bute Transit, I had not heard of them either, although the tel no would sajust they were busy as they had 6 lines.
Its been 18 yrs since I left Souh Wales, but this thread continually sends me down memory lane. Great stuff.
Paul.

Hi Paul,
Like yourself I thought the town was Port Talbot, as I went into Margam a lot when I drove for C W Griffiths fetching bulk slag from there in the late sixties. As you say could have been Newport, or any of the steel plants that were around South Wales in those days. I would imagine Percy took the pics over a length of time, no one took a load of pics in one go back then.
Cheers Dave.

Another pic from Conods, with an AWD alongside the other two. Loads of old wagons there, but could not get pics, as they are back behind other vehicles.

Another pic of Conods stock. One of bulk haulier, Roger Mathews old ERF tractor units on the right.

A nice ERF tractor unit outside Conod’s at Leominster, they have run several ERF’s on their own fleet over the years, as well as dealing in used trucks.

Ex Roger Matthews of St Weonards, ERF unit at Conod’s Leominster.

Here’s another batch of pics for you folks. These were lent to me by, Brinley Bowen, from Pembridge in Herefordshire, he runs a couple of artics on bulk potatoe haulage and general haulage. Brinleys one of three brothers who each run their own haulage business. Here’s a pic of Brinley’s ERF which he bought new. There are quite a few older moters to show.

This is one of older brother, Clive’s Leylands, having a lie down on a hot day !

Another view of Clive Bowen’s overturned Leyland, apparantly one of his drivers was tipping the lime for storage at the yard when, as sometimes happens, a bit got stuck in the trailer and pulled the lot over. The area outside Clive’s House and yard where this happened, is as flat as a pancake, just shows, as many of you know, how easy it is, to roll a tipper on its side.

Hello Dave
You ok mate? Good pic’s again, Not good to see then on there side but that’s bulkers, and more often than not it’s not the drivers fault, as you said sticking one side, I had about 25 years in the bulk tipping game and never had one over, but it’s been a bit close at times. Sad to see that ERF of Rogers parked up there, you did say in one of your posts to me that he had problems with how things are at the moment, A very nice person Roger I met him a few times and liked him a lot. Anyway mate I’m moving back to the UK in 2 weeks time to a little village in West Sussex, a long way from Kington I know but not to far away for me to get to the next Kingston show, maybe we could get together on that day and have a beer and a natter, you could get Norman there, If he’s not away in his camper van that he bought because he doesn’t like driving!!!
cheers
John.

Hi John,
Good to hear from you, got a sister living in West Sussex, in Hurstpierpoint, not far from Burgess Hill, haven’t been down there for a couple of years, must make an effort and go.Kington is on 12th september as far as I know, they have moved it a couple of miles out of town to a new site, haven’t been to it for forty years, but if you get up there could meet you some where around that way. Why are you coming back John, would have thought there’s not much in the UK foranyone nowadays. Will enquire about the adventure’s of Norman off Paul Griffiths, who see’s him more than I do,Paul reckons Norman has loads of pics from his lifetime at the Gore, borrowing them is something I will look into.
Cheers Dave.
