Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

One of C W Griffiths, earlier Scania eight wheelers, this in my opinion was a very smart moter.

G’day,
nice pics of Griffiths’ Bisons Dave,I thought I recognized them,I took these photos at Builth Wells ARC quarry in 1984. The Griffiths Frighter must have been pretty new. I have few more that I’ll dig out later. Is the quarry at Builth still going? Does anyone recogzine the Reiver 6 wheeler?
Cheers Jamie

Hi Dave,

Really enjoying the Griffiths pics, thanks for posting them.

I agree, the Scania looks very smart.

The H reg Foden eight wheeler seems to have a BEG registration which would make it a Cambridgeshire lorry, local to me. Do you know if it was previously operated by Heygates Flour Millers?
If I have misread the reg and its BEC, its probably from Lancashire and Im barking upo the wrong tree.

Thanks for the info about the Bedford TM, probably not the same lorry as I was thinking of.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Jamie,
The Freighter in the picture was sold to Kens Tipper Hire. Not sure who operated the Reiver, but I bet Paul Griffiths does,he has an encyclopedic memory on local lorries. Paul has given me a lot of information about their fleet, trouble is I can’t remember all of it, as soon as I know the history I will post it. Cheers for your pics, stick as many as you can on.
Nearly forgot, yes Jamie the quarry at Builth is going.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Mark,
You are right, it was a flour tanker, and it was BEG reg. I will ask Paul if it was Heygates.
Unfortunately they haven’t got any pics of the TK or the Commer Maxiload I drove for them.
Cheers Dave.

One of the nicest lorries, that tthe firm has had to drive, said Paul about this Foden 4000 series pictured here.

Hi Dave I wish the big quarry firms would run in liveries as smart as the old Nash one it seemed to make any lorry look tidy.

Agree with you there Big Bear. The orange colour did look tidy, but so did the yellow of Mann-Abell before they were taken over by Tilcon. C W Griffiths painted their lorries yellow when Mann-Abell bought the Gore and Doyhir quarries in the mid sixties. They ran in Nash colours until Anglo American bought the company off Minorco who had it for a few years, when Anglo bought Tarmac, they as you probably know started the white colour scheme, which is a bit boring after having a couple of nice bright colours. I will now get down from my soap box.
Cheers Dave.
PS. C W Griffiths will make any lorry look smart.

Five of C W Griffiths fleet in their yard. Pictured in june 1999. I had forgotten about the Scania 3 series six wheeler until I saw this pic, also in this pic is a Foden with a heavy duty dump truck body which they used for Nash in the quarry on day work.

The Foden with the heavy duty body, before it was in C W Griffiths colours.

Pictured at Nash Rocks, Strinds quarry weighbridge, new Foden 3000 series of C W Griffiths, looking very smart.

This is one of C W Griffiths Foden 4000 series six wheelers, being built on the line, at the Foden factory at Sandbach.

At Sandbach again.

Another pic of the Sandbach works.

Pictured outside the Foden factory at Sandbach, with the C W Griffiths moter in the middle.

Same Foden, now pictured at Neville Charold’s factory, in Mansfield in October 1989, waiting to be fitted with the tipper body.

New Foden now fitted with a Neville Charold body.

Not sure if this is the same lorry, but this is the finished article. Paul puts personalised plates on them, so I,m a bit confused, but thts me. Just had another look, its a different body.
