Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Mervyn Thomas is possibly the biggest haulier around these parts, running over fifty trucks, most of his lorries are in the old colours of Roberts of Knighton, who he drove for as a young man. This one is not in his usual colours of red, white and blue seen on the B4362 at Shobdon Herefordshire.

Hi Dave,

I might be getting my Welsh regions a bit confused as Im not sure where they operate from, but do you have any pics of the Ivor Owen tipper fleet.
Used to run a smart E series ERF eight wheeler in Tarmac colours that went to a few truck shows in the late 80s early 90s.
I think they might run red DAFs these days.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
They are from Wrexham. I have a couple of prints of their lorries, one a K series Dodge, the other an ERF eight wheeler, both done by Alan Spillett.
Cheers Dave.

Here’s the ERF, quality not as good as its been laminated from a christmas card that Alan sent me, full sized print of this one is great.

Thanks Dave,

Wouldnt mind seeing a photo of the ERF depicted in the drawing. It started life in Cambridgeshire, Im thinking probably with Ketton Cement.

Are Owens still operating?

Whilst Ive got you off topic, Im after a pic of Cawley Bros ( i know they are from North Wales) eight wheeler Foden Alpha tipper. It looks well in their unusual colours, dont know if anyone can help?

Cheers

Hi Mark,
As far as I know Owens are still operating, run by Ivor Owens family. They are out of my territory in Wrexham, same with Cawley Bros, seen their wagons around, even seen them doing the odd backload from the quarries by me, otherwise sorry can’t help on that one. Did see a piece about Ivor Owens firm in one of the magazines a couple of years ago, maybe more, at the time they did have some Daf six wheeler tippers.
Cheers Dave.

Ivor Owens still operate, although a much reduced fleet from what they did. They have a couple of 4-wheelers, one (Volvo FL6) that does a regular run all-day everyday and another (Foden Alpha) that works for Tarmac usually, out of Borras, Pant or Hendre. Neither are signwritten though. I’[m not sure how many others they have apart from that but I haven’t seen many of them about put it that way.

Cawleys still have a fleet of approx. 10 trucks. They have about 4 artics in their own colours, a few Hanson contract 8x4’s and a little MAN 4-wheeler that does local stuff. I’m not sure if they still have the Foden Alpha in their own colours any more, they might but I haven’t seen it for a while. I don’t get down that way as much anymore, especially since Penmaenmawr was mothballed so all figures are guesswork.

As a footnote, the Foden you’re looking for RoadCommander was pictured in an Edbro advert about 4years ago. I know cos’ the pic was taken while I was sat waiting for a load in Abergele quarry! Might be worth a look at their website?

FL10 of Mike Brookes from Hereford, seen in Shobdon Village on the B4362.

Local haulier " Burgoynes of Lyonshall " have run lorries for a century, this is on of their new Renaults seen on the A44 at Dunfield near Kington.

Thanks for the info Hammer, I had heard that Cawleys had shrunk a bit, Do they still have any ERFs do you know?

Cheers
Mark

David Morgan in Tarmac’s eight wheeler Volvo FM tipper, seen in the Rhyse lane near Staunton on Arrow, Herefordshire.

John Weaver and his two son’s run three of these Scania timber lorries, from Staunton on Arrow in Herefordshire.
Here we have Mark Weaver on the A4112 at Sarnsfield crossroads.

Only got a partial shot of this Volvo artic, loaded with timber passing through Llandrindod Wells, on its way to the BSW sawmill at Newbridge on Wye.

Pontrilas timber MAN on the A44 New Radnor bypass. Timber is the one job, that is harder on the lorry than tipper work.

I think they have a couple of ‘ERFMAN’ tractor units but the old EC11’s are gone as far as I am aware. They have a few Hansons 8x4s, at least one of which is an ERFMAN. If they have any proper ERF’s then I haven’t seen them lately.

One of bulk haulage specialist, Ed Weetman’s, eight wheelers, seen on the A49 Travellers Rest, near Craven Arms.

This artic bulker has the name Dai Jones on it, seen it around quite a bit. Seen here at the Travellers Rest A49, near Craven Arms. I think its from Denbigh North Wales.
