Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

This is Ivors Mercedes six wheeler, the one in the previous picture after an artic of Clive Price smashed into him on the A4112 at Sarnsfield in the early nineties, he was driving the lorry himself with one of his drivers, Ioan Jones in the passenger seat, Ivor broke his collar bone, cut his foot and suffered a lot of bruises, he is adamant that if it had not been a Merc he would have been killed, considering his Fodens had fibre glass cabs, he is probably right.

More pics of the damage.

Ivor Duggan after his smash, right leg and foot swollen, all he could get on was a wellington.

You can’t keep a good man down, a fit again Ivor pictured in one of his yards.

Dodgy old job tipping that lime Dave, looking at your pic’s they seem to back down hill to the ramps, must have been done that way to get the tipping height i suppose, so if it’s a bit wet and muddy and you lock up hit or miss the ramps you got a problem, glad I never got involved with that.

cheers

john.

A lot of the ground is flat John, I think these pics were taken in some of the rougher parts that the job brings. There is plenty of height on the flat, the spreader bodies are quite low. As you say, when its wet or muddy its a bit tricky, they always carry a camera to record one anothers mishaps.
Cheers Dave.

Merc with a new cab fitted after the smash, Ivor as said previously in this thread still has the lorry, will not be selling that one.

Ivor was lucky he was in the Merc when he had that bump, they may not be the best thing in the world to drive but there tough old trucks, you got a job to kill um they keep going on.

Two of the Duggan fleet of today, an eight and a six parked at Ivors main yard.

Same two again.

Got a 11 litre engine, would be a fast machine with a turbo on it John, Ivor liked his Mercs, but his Sons are keener on the Fodens with 400 Cats, bit more power than 210 in the Merc.
Cheers Dave.
PS. Got a load of Sharples to post, Jean has found a load of pics in albums, just got to pick them up.

Look forward to seeing them Dave

Hi Dave I was surprised to see people still using ramps on the lime job in your area,I do a little bit to hauling lime and most of our spreaders tow a Bob-Cat to load the spreader instead of ramps. This is alot better you can just tip in a field and go which really improves your turn around time plus your not waiting for someone to turn up.

Hi Big Bear,
A couple of contractors use Bob-Cats for loading spreaders as you say. Ivor Duggan usually has two tractors and spreaders at the same job, which makes unloading quite quick, he is highly organised with powerful tractors 200 bhp Fendts and can spread up to 400 tons a day, using three six wheelers and an eight plus three tractors and spreaders.
Cheers Dave.

Ivor Duggans Tractor 1990 130 BHP.

Ivors Tractors 2009, FENDT are 200 BHP this one in the picture was put to work earlier this month, another a day later, a couple of Massey Fergusons back them up.

Albion Reiver of Sharples of Eardisley pictured in the driveway of their House next to the yard and garage. I remember this six wheeler tipper hauling out of Strinds quarry and being driven by Ted Symonds.

One of Bulmers Micky Mouse Fodens pictured at Sharples yard at Eardisley.

And now we have the answer :exclamation: . Burgoyne Brothers of Eardisley wrecker, parked behind is Bulmers,

Nice one of the Sharples Albion Dave, drove a few of them for Ameys years ago.
cheers
John.
