I seem to recall reading that Peake’s at Maesbury were the main users of the Montgomery Canal back in the days before any of us were born. My late father-in-law was one of the movers in starting the restoration of the “Monty” and his ashes are buried next to the towing path at one of the locks.
It’s asking too much to expect that anyone has photos of narrow boats on the Montgomery, this being a lorry drivers’ site?

Morning ROF,
I have some books on the Montgomery canal with a photo of Peate’s narrowboat, I think that Peates were the last to use the Monty commercially and when the aquaduct collapsed over the river Perry it put a stop to that, 1934 ish, I have walked a fair bit of the Monty and traced a couple of the long gone branches off it, will have a look at weekend for that book and scan a pic for you, Cheer’s Pete

ianto:
It must have been late 80s early 90s when i was carrying out of there i know that Oswestry Waste Paper were also using some of the buildings for storage it was around the time that R A Owen of Llandinam bought the the Scania p93 six wheeler bulk blower

Here is Photo of it ianto, its one of Dave’s photo’s from earlier in this thread, I’m sure Owens still have this motor, Cheer’s Pete

Morning all,

Pete, ROF, I have strong ties to the Montgomery, and the whole Shropshire Union system. My Great Grandfather had three pairs of boats on the Chester Canal, then in 1886 he cought his leg between the bridgehole and a boat. His leg was taken off at Netley Hospital, (where Florence Nightingale once worked). They drugged him with Irish Whisky to dull the pain…turned him into an alcoholic, and eventually he lost his boats. The last pair being the Cato, and the Dorothy.

My Grandfather Jack Musson began working at Telfords warehouses in Ellesmere Port, then crewed Fly Boats on the run to Welshpool, Shrewsbury and Newtown. 1900 he was on the “Company Packet”, the Directors inspection boat based at Ellesmere. He met my Grandmother when laid over at Peats at Maesbury with one of the Fly Boats. Her parents owned the Navigation at Maesbury. They were married from the Iron Lock at Beeston in 1906.

They took over at Autherley Junction as Clerk, and Horse Keeper, (a Husband and Wife role), in 1908, and were there up until 1926.

A new book has been published, Shropshire Union Fly Boats, which would appear to have a fair bit of information about the Monty, although as a caution, (and I only flicked through it in a book shop), the time frames related, as well as some details would appear to be jumbled. (Forgive me if that sounds churlish, but historic accuracy is vital as we look back).

Apologies to introduce canals onto a lorry thread, but anyone who knows the Oswestry area, would know that the hauliers in that area sprang from a lot of the businesses along the canal…and Railway as well.

I spent many happy hours around Maesbury with the late Trevor Morris, and Russell and Gordon Cadwallader, though today the area is barely recognisable from the farms that were once there…Can hardly credit how I used to pull the stop on a Gardner Atkinson, and coasted into Trevors farm at Morda, ......so Russell could not hear the distinctive bark......and play hell with me for letting Trevor have one of, "his" Atkinsons.....(though Trevor would have Kirkstall back ends, and Russell, always Eaton 18802 two speeds)!.........Then when Ted Jones started with the vans........Russell was straight round to warn if he acquired any Atkinsons that would be the end!!!!!!!......luckily Ted had some Scanias off ■■■■ Phillips…used to enjoy a drink with him in the Three Pigeons…and laugh at the antics of our, “clients”…

Cheerio for now.

Morning Saviem,
The Three Pidgeon’s at Nescliffe?
The canals were the motorways of their time! As you say a lot of hauliers started with canal transport, Owens from Pant wharf on the Monty and Joseph Holloways from Oldbury are two that springs to mind, Cheer’s Pete ps. I have some books on the Monty and Shroppie Saviem, I will dig them out and drop them in to our librarian!

Thanks to Saviem for yet another insight into our industrial heritage. It never ceases to amaze me how a mention of some little memory can elicit such fascinating pieces of history from other members.
