I think they were blue Volvo FLs, Dave. It was about 14 years ago, one had faded signwriting. They loaded fine washed sand and took it to a Welsh stone masonry firm. The drivers liked the loads nice and even so that the dropsides weren’t overloaded.

Was it a firm called Border ■■■■■■■■ Ltd Nathan from the Welshpool area. They have a couple of stone quarries at Buttington and Middletown themselves, also used to buy rockery stone off Nash Rocks, and then sell it to Harrods and posh garden centres. Their wagons were blue.
Cheers Dave.

Some scans of my Dads old B Series.
Hello wayne thank you for the pictures , as i said i can remember it on the A41 collecting feed from merseyside , thank you Trevor .
There were some long wheelbase dropside tippers in our quarry at one time, generally carting tarmac and roadstone but also bags when required.
Pete.

If it was Border ■■■■■■■■ they did have one wagon & drag, a Volvo F88 and an F12 at different times. They ran various vehicles down this way, also one of my mates hauled up to their quarry for Nash Rocks with loads occasionally.
Cheers Dave.

Hello again Dave the name John Swain rings a bell was he fro m Bishops castle Churchstoke that neck of the woods , and perhaps those people from Church stretton? its got me thinking ! Trevor .He was from Trewern near Welshpool Trevor. He could be related to Swains of Stretton, who are still trading from Pontesbury area I think, also Steve Swain is from the same area as well.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave I remember Mike Swain from Trewern as well. Back in the 1970s and early 80s he used to sell tyres. He had a ford D series box van with a crew cab converted to a sleeper. He was always on the cb radio. Called himself spider Mike
One of Hereford stone and aggregates merchant Radbournes wagons, seen on the A438 near Whitecross, Hereford.

Hi Merfyn,
I see on Border ■■■■■■■■ website Swains of Stretton modern Scania’s loading out of their quarries near Trewern. Possibly Mike Swain is involved with hauling for them.
Cheers Dave.

Sorry Dave, I meant actually based from our place. A few o/d’s ran them, of course later on Tarmac wouldn’t allow dropsiders to carry tar anyway but they had long gone by then. I remember Border ■■■■■■■■ trucks around here, we have a few expensive garden centres in the area!
Pete.

They were on a good job Pete. I think they took the rockery or walling stone their quarry, and then put it on pallets under nets and hauled it to various well paying places, such as garden centres etc. I could never understand why Nash Rocks didn’t supply these places direct.
Cheers Dave.
The ones I loaded at Gill Mill could’ve been working for Border ■■■■■■■■, I certainly loaded their wagon and drag several times, when I did my last quarry stint in 2012 I loaded their artics. I think they used to bring in slate chippings for AWBS and take shingle out. At least one local garden centre buys their bags, a bloody expensive way of doing it.

I think they deal in all sorts of stone based products, or rather quarried products Nathan. I haven’t actually seen any of Border ■■■■■■■■ vehicles about for a long time, like a lot of others, they have probably got hauliers delivering goods when needed.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya,
Remember seeing one like this in Bulmers yard yep,’ I was in there as usual loading
handball boxes of export via Liverpool which mean’t “do it yourself” unloading if
and when you finally got into the shed, not so happy days, bone idle dockers.Best
thing ever when they closed the old docks and gave the lot of them the “push”
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Harry,
Bulmers moved a lot of their operation to Ledbury a few years ago, but recently announced a 59 million pound investment in their Plough Lane plant at Hereford. I noticed big cranes on the skyline around there already. Heineken International own the firm these days.
Cheers Dave.
