Hiya,
Was never keen on those Trader’s, although I only ever had to move one occasionally
and never drove one on the road and even in those days I was quite less portly the
room in the shed was rather less than I liked and wouldn’t have fancied going very
far in one, also the one I did drive the odd time had vacuum wipers and one Monday
morning when having to shift the thing yet again to get my own motor out I did have
to put the wipers on and the thing decided to emptythe black muck from the wiper
motor all over my Monday morning going away shirt, the regular driver told me it is
a regular thing with Traders, I told him to get himself to work sooner in future and
he could have any future crap that his motor didn’t want, Oh’ yes I had to move the
motor several more times before I moved to pastures anew but stuck my head out of
the window, once bitten twice shy.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Harry,
I rode shotgun as a young teenager quite regularly with one of Roberts of Knighton drivers in a Thames Trader, it pulled well with over 10 ton loaded both ways to Avonmouth and back. Grain down and bagged animal feeds back.
I did have a couple of days on a semi long wheelbase tipper when I drove for S W Brisbane, when my wagon was in for plating, it wen OK.
I drove a D series Ford six wheeler with a 360 turbo engine for C M Philpotts which went well. Never drove any other Ford lorries except a new D series chassis cab from Hereford to Knighton for a customer of Brisbanes.
Cheers Dave.
That Trader is owned by one of our vintage club members, we have a rally on his farm, he also organizes tractor road runs but we don’t hold that against him!
So Rob gave my secrets away then Dave, I wont worry too much as the only sense he ever talks is NONsense… To be fair to Rob he did let me sit in the drivers seat at a local show a few years ago, and that is one of only two lorries that I have sat in since I was made redundant 11 years ago!
Pete.

Hi Pete,
He didn’t tell me anything, other than he is a mate of yours, when he came up to me and introduced himself. He seems a nice bloke. ( Got to say that, as he is a member on here ).
Cheers Dave.

Rob’s spot on Dave, can have a laugh with him which is worth a lot. Even though he is a wealthy O/D he still finds time to talk to minions like me!! Haven’t seen much of him for a year or so but hopefully I will eyeball him at a rally or two this year. He has (or did have?) a Trader tipper himself that was an on-going project.
Pete.
Hello Dave
I too drove a Maxiload for a couple o years they were a good motor comfy and warm in the winter. I like a lot of other drivers didny take photos back then but I built the model from memory and Paul Robson from Penrith did the decals for me.
Good photo of you two boy racers nice to be able to put a face to a name. Eddie.
Hi Eddie,
I liked the Commer Maxiload that I drove for C W Griffiths, it was a good well made lorry in its day.Strangely C W Griffiths haven’t got a photo of that lorry, but have of most of the others over the years. Good memories.
Cheers Dave.

Ha, I see TNUK member Rob (1970 Commer) managed to find a cupful of diesel to make the trip Dave!Wouldn’t have been much fun around here, it poured with rain most of the day and the Smallwood rally was abandoned.
Pete.
Cupful of diesel, have you forgotten how economical a TS3 is Pete, half a thimble full is enough to do a weekends’ wheelspinning with a Commer, these are the motor of choice for frugal Derbyshire owner operators you know, it’s no problem to get just over 20 mpg. Had a quick word with your sparring partner Dave the Renegade and his sidekick Tetragaz, I think they might be planning a trip to Derbyshire as we speak, someone told them that Thomas Wards, Shining Bank had a job to Presteigne paying a premium rate and they said they could bring one up with them from Gore to Ballidon to make the job worthwhile, all they were short of were a couple of Leyland Bisons and the will to get back in to a lorry seat again (just joking Dave & Gaz, nice to meet you by the way) Keep on TNUKing Pete and I’ll see you around somewhere soon.

Hi Rob,
Gaz lives near Stoke on Trent way. Its me that lives close to the Gore, look straight across the valley at the quarry. We could bring a couple of van loads for you. There is still a working Bison this way, the one on my Avatar.
Cheers Dave.
Gardner[no not 8 pot] with david brown gearbox, must be one of the last trucks built with this set up,ta,Pete
Blooming heck Rob, Tommy Wards at Shining Bank, going back a bit lad, it has been RMC and CEMEX since then! All gone now, enjoyed my time carting from there (laid back was an understatement for those guys, they would send you off to Leeds or Bradford with tarmac at 3 pm!) but no use to you Warwickshire specialists whose road atlas stopped at Bakewell.
Plenty of Commers at the quarry when I started at Ballidon in 1975, then KM’s and Clydesdales gained favour but they couldn’t touch the Commer on fuel.
Pete.

That’s it Chris. I couldn’t remember the name and the pic is to dark for me to read it.
Cheers Dave.
It looks like a height restriction on the entrance to the park on Google Dave. Is it a lorry Park ?

Yes there are lorries there most nights. The coaches park there as well. There is a barrier that they can put across, but I think that is used when certain elements are around.
Cheers Dave.
