Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Dave the Renegade:

Not sure if this is a unit altered or a ballast tractor.

Don’t know what it is Dave, got to be something to do with Eric Vick.

Dave the Renegade:

A K series Dodge, at least its got a turbo, which is better than the gutless thing I drove.

Hi Dave, thats an updated motor in there. The standard one would of been a Perkins 6354, the turbo was added much later. I believe most had 5 speed boxes with Eaton 2 speed axles at 16,520kgs GVW.
Those cabs were good in their day.

Regards Paul.

hiya,
Unlikely to be a purpose built ballast tractor, the ballast tractors were usually
double drive I’ve never come across one with the middle axle being steerable
and only single wheels, would be poor for dragging weight.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Paul,
Yes the one I drove pictured below had the 6354 Perkins with the direct drive system five on the stick with five on the button, a bit different to the two speed axle. Brisbane’s had two of them with that set up, and a third with the conventional two speed axle. I wasn’t sad to see the back of this thing when I left the firm and drove a Bedford KM for C M Philpotts.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Darren,
Heyope is about 10 miles from me, not the widest of roads to get to, up under Knucklas viaduct. My Dad delivered to farms up there for years with a 24 foot flatbed which wasn’t good, but nowadays the wagons are bigger.
Cheers Dave.
