Hello all,
The movement of an abnormal load is strictly speaking one piece only, technically the bucket should have gone seperately,In my opinion the laws governing STGO are quite frankly a minefield,The comments made on this page saying there are two loads are fair enough but let us have a look at the crane ballast carriers ,there are probably up to a dozen different items on a trailer that is running under CAT 3 so where is the sense in me not being allowed to carry an 8ton bucket when i am totally inside axle weights and so forth, this is a topic that we can waste time on until the cows come home,it really is academic. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: .
regards graham.

Hi boys
Graham I agree with you STGO is a mine field. You could have said the bucket was part of the machine and you may have got away with it. I did I got stopped at Doxey on the M6 with a Cat 330 on the back with 4 buckets. The man on the scales was instructing a new recruit on how to go about the job. He asked for my movement order and over the bridge I went 200kgs under 65ton. He told the boy it was ok for me to have the buckets as they were part of the machine. The woman officer called me over for the hammer test but the boss man shouted over no he’s ok its only 2 weeks since the truck past it’s test off you go driver.Happy Days
Regards Keith

Hello Andrew.
To give you an idea of how out of touch STGO rules are i was pulled by the gestapo on bath bank jcn18 M4 about six months ago carrying two volvo shovels they weighed 8 tons each,The unladen weight of my tractor and trailer is 33 tons giving a total weight of 49 tons i was fined £120.00 thankyou very much for a 5 ton overload . The reason being since the first shovel i loaded did not take the combination into STGO We lawfully should not have carried the second shovel. But if i had loaded a shovel weighing 20 ton i could have quite lawfully have loaded another shovel weighing 20 ton providing the two shovels were loaded at the same place and then delivered to the same destination i could have run at Cat 2 up to 80 tons without fear of been pulled and fined so with a system such as this i refer to my earlier comment STGO is a complete minefield.   .
kindest regards graham.

Hi graham,
Thanks for that insight,to be honest I wasn’t aware that it was such a bloody minefield.a company near us at work deals in scrap balers.the Italians that run in there must be exempt from uk law because they bring 40 plus tonne equipment (net weight) over in euro liners with 4x2 units!!! Though the good old vostappo men and women are to busy handing out alleged overweight penalties to the likes of you.madness :exclamation:
Regards Andrew.

Some more pics from Graham AKA gah1950.Seen on the trailer behind the big Scania V8 is a Cat dumper, loaded in Walters yard at Hirwaun bound for Cornelly Quarry near Bridgend.

I wouldn’t think Graham should have any bother from the officials moving a big dumper all in one piece.

Hello kieth.
Sorry for any delay in responding as i have been out again making a nuisance of myself again,On a serious note if the law was applied to to the letter any loose implements carried on any stgo cannot be legally carried, but as we all know there are some vosa/police officers that are not remotley interested if you were to be carrying a couple of extra buckets etc but are more concerned with issues such as pathetic maintenance/drivers hours and so on and rightly so.As i see it when you get pulled it,s all on the day ,As i mentioned earlier what is the difference of the crane ballast outfits, some people i have spoken to say it,s all about having the weight of two loads on one trailer instead of using two seperate vehicles,i wonder if anyone on tnuk could shed a little light here because there seems to be two different laws at work here.
kindest regards graham.

Hi jeh,
I would say go through to Leominster on the A44,then follow the A49 north towards Ludlow and pick up the A456 at Woofferton signed Kidderminster and go beyond Kidderminster pick up the signs for the M5/M42 and so on.Alternately go on the A44 through to Worcester and pick up the M5.
Cheers Dave.

Hello escortg3(andrew).
As we know that is taking the proverbial big time,if he was pulled he would absolutely not have any defence nor could he forward any sort of mitigation,i was in a scrapyard in birmingham delivering part of a baler when i saw a scania 150 tonner with a four axle step frame getting loaded with bales of metal,so being a nosey git i asked the driver how much weight he had on and the reply was the bridge trips out at 80,so again assuming if he was 80 ton and he was pulled the type of cargo he was carrying would instantly revert him back into construction & use with a 34 ton overload, the fine could be telephone numbers and rightly so as it is very unfair on general hauliers that are trying to run a straight ship.
kind regards graham. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
