Cheers Dave.

hiya,
When I was there Dave they had places in London, Glasgow and Hull,
they was also linked with MAT transport and the then Bowker livery
incorporated the MAT logo on their vehicles, happy days until I got
lumbered with that Scania 80 thing.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hull opened in the 60s… I’ve forgotten now which year

The depots were rationalised in the late 80s, with the closure of Glasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool & London. The reason was that improved communications (fax, mobiles, etc.) meant that it could all be done much more efficiently from Blackburn. Incidentally, I was the last Depot Manager in Liverpool! I also went down to Bermondsey to shut up shop down there. The offices in London, Liverpool, Cardiff & Glasgow were staffed by ex-J&H men, snapped up for the traffic they brought after Hilton bought and ravaged J&H.

There was also Thrutrans in Dover, which was closed when the EU customs restrictions were swept away in the early 90s.

The move to Preston took place in the summer of 1989, when the depot (complete with unfinished rail terminal) was bought from the rapidly-failing Whittle International.

The MAT connection was that Bowker were the Northern agents for MAT from 1961, and which lasted until the early 70s. The preserved Mk.1 Atkinson, GBV 759E, spent the first 4 years of its life on contract to MAT at Barking, operated on a B Licence.

Thanks Merfyn, not as familiar with the roads up your way to remember the exact place where they were taken. We tended to travel north from Porthmadog or east along the Lleyn Peninsula. We only went by the quarry about three times.
Cheers Dave.
