Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

A chap that lived next door to us when I was a kid drove one of these Leyland Comets. It looked a big lorry in the 50’s,still looks pretty big these days.

I used to drive a Commer Maxiload like this one,a cracking lorry in my opinion.

A couple of AEC’s parked at Gaydon.

Another AEC alongside a Cardiganshire reg Austin.

Wiltshires of Babbacombe; Their 8wheel ERF/Man was in Gill Mill earlier, comes in about twice a week. Nicely looked after aswell. Their old ERF would make a good project lorry…

That six wheeler would be a nice lorry for you to buy for Callum,Nathan :bulb:  .
Cheers Dave.

I’d paint her in Sands and Gravels livery :sunglasses: Actually, I had an un-pc response from Sarah (Callums’ mum) when I noticed a Bedford O type flatbed for sale at a rally last year and said that I should buy it, paint it red and have it signwritten as “Bernard T. Frost, coal and hay, Witney” (Grandad’s employer in the '40s and '50s)

I used to drive a Commer Maxiload like this one,a cracking lorry in my opinion.

My uncle drove one for his mate Pete Horne on contract to Birds’ on asphalt; He said they were great for their time, easy to maintain, good payload (they got around 10ton at 16gross) and made a nice noise.

They did sound good Nathan, also pulled well. The Foden two strokes sounded good as well. The Commer I drove was the best I drove in my day,and that included Ergo cab Comet and Bedford KM and Dodge K sreies and the D sreies Fords,I rated the Commer Maxiload at 16 ton gross the best out of that lot.
Cheers Dave.

Another Commer Maxiload from Hereford, belonging to the late Mike Brookes RIP family, seen alongside a little Bedford TK.

Hi Dave, I used to use one for loading and shunting trailers,Once I did pull a 23t ships engine block up the road for one of the Scanias to pick up, got up to 4th gear as well    , 2 dabs of the brake pedal though and you ran out of air, the tiny single cyl. compressor couldn’t keep up !

They were good on a four wheeler Trev, but you are talking different weight with the work you were doing. As with most lorries they were good in their day,but times have changed.Still we enjoyed the show, missed you somewhere along the way,but there was a lot of people inside, easy to miss someone.
Cheers Dave.

Because of the rain we doubled up on most of the pics,as with these two.

Probably the biggest selling lorry of its day,in various sizes and guises.

Another little Bedford TK,alongside an AEC Mercury.

A couple of skip lorries from 1966 and 1970’/71.

Yes I did look out for you Dave but with the rain it was a bit crowded inside, I did want to take a picture of the Detroit Diesel underneath the KM for CF   ,It had authentic black oil streaks from the rear rocker covers, living up to its name of the green leaker !

Probably missed a few off TNUK myself Trev.Marcus sussed me out and came over, then Andrew joined us,did see Steve fryske outside. It was a shame about the weather, but we enjoyed the show.Probably concentrated on the models more this time, which are a credit to the people who make them.I don’t think I would have the ability or patience to do that.
Cheers Dave.

I wonder what a lot of these lorries on display are like mechanically. They still look capable of working.

A muscle building Leyland seen at the show  .

Used to haul to these years ago, don’t see them about anymore.

F10 Globetrotter making the Ford D series look small.
