One of KTH older Foden six wheelers, seen on the A44 Kington bypass.

Another Tarmac liveried artic, seen on the A44 beetween the Gore and Kington.

Ian Lloyd in his Volvo eight legger, seen on the A44 at Dunfield near Kington.

Interesting to see the J Holbrook motor your way Dave.

They have quite a few wagons now and are based here in East Anglia.
However, they follow the work, most of the eight leggers have sleeper cabs and you can see them all over.
I think they even did some asphalt work over on the Isle of Man if my memory serves.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
They have had about a dozen working here for about six weeks.Apparently some of them have been in the Falklands for several months on a job.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Mark, yes Holbrook did a lot of work on the new runway extension at the Isle of Man Airport at Ronaldsway last year. It’s been mentioned on here before that some local hauliers weren’t happy about UK based wagons doing the work but it’s been said that they couldn’t have coped with all of it.

Hi there. Im a Holbrooks driver and im working out of the Gore quarry at the moment. (im in a CF artic) Yes we chase the work and Tarmac usually keep us busy around the country.
We also do a lot of Runway Resurfacing with either Colas or Larfage. We have worked on all the major airports and we also go abroad such as The Falklands and Jersey.
Yes the natives do get upset (such as the Isle of Man) but they do get offered work but usually turn it down because either they dont want it or cant do it.
The Falklands job is now coming to an end and the boys are flying home this week. They have been away for quite a few months just coming home for 2 weeks at christmas and 2 weeks in febuary.

Hi msgyorkie,

Thanks for your interesting post.
What was happening in the Falklands was it the airport runway being resurfaced or was it roads on the island?

Presumably all the kit was shipped down there from Britain

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
Yep the Falklands job was resurfacing of RAF Mount Pleasent. I believe that there was also some perimeter roads to be done as well. (i may be corrected here)
All the lorries were shipped over and I think it took about 4-6 weeks to get them down there. Some aggregates was also shipped down there. I was hauling sand from Tarmac Bittering quarry in Norfolk down to Tarmac Blashford (Ringwood) where it was bagged into 1 tonne dumpy bags and then shipped out of southampton.

The lads that flew down departed RAF Brize Norton and stopped at Acsension Island for refuelling then onto Mount Pleasant. The return leg at christmas was a long journey as they went via Chile then Madrid then england. (because the raf flight was full for servicemen to return home.

I like the airport work, usually the mobile ashphalt plant is on the airport grounds so no tacho needed

Hi msgyorkie,
Not either of these two, the one that you drive must be at the Gore.
Cheers Dave…

Another Scania coming down the A44 from the quarries towards Kington.

An artic went off the road big time here a few weeks back,on the A4111 just outside Kington.

Thought this was a handy little motor to have.I would think you could make more money doing odd jobs with that, than a big wagon these days.

I’m either in a silver sprinter or a red transit, have a rig in that one.I live right opposite the Gore, used to drive out of there on tippers, had a smash several years ago, just act as a cpc holder for a couple of hauliers nowadays, did act for some out of the quarry.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave you could well be right about the little-un making more money than than the big fellah’s a good pal of mine lost his big licence due to ill-health so had no option other than to get rid of his artic and down grade to a long wheel based Transit to keep him going until retirement age he was an O/D and he told me he was no worse off running about with bits and bobs than he was running about with the big motor, smaller fuel bills and shoestring maintainence and he was always in demand to deliver stuff that was needed yesterday, he had no regrets and made a decent living and the cheap labour ie me when i did the odd trip for him i’m still awaiting my pay packet but what are mates for.
thanks harry long retired.

If you did the odd job for him Harry, it must have a little drag on the back, that’s whot made it pay.

Hi Harry,
Those little Izuzu’s carry about 3 or 4 ton,a handy vehicle for delivering small loads of any kind to awkward places.I notice a lot of these chaps doing gardening have even smaller trucks with their mowers etc on the back, with a section on them for throwing the grass and rubbish to cart away.A very versatile vehicle and economical I would think.
Cheers Dave.
