I was just giving him a “work out” Dave! I had an Owner/ Trainer Permit but our insurers wouldn’t allow me to have a drivers race permit! I could do anything with the horses as long as I didn’t drive in a professional race for money! The drivers I engaged over the years were the only “weak link” in our team, although we enjoyed a great deal of success during the years I ran Pacers. The comittee at Tregarron used to litrally beg us to take our horses to their big meeting, and willing to cover our expenses to get us down there but to no avail! 1) it was a poxy road to get there 2)I preferred the proper half mile hard track at York 3)Tregarron is on grass in a field which is dodgy anyway.4)I couldn’t really spare the time. This is what can happen when you get slung off the seat,a broken arm!!!which I got on the training track at home driving my own horse Dalechief in '89 when he was a 2 year old.It was my own fault ,not the horse’s!

I know it’s dangerous Dennis, they hold four harness racing meetings each year,a couple of fields away from here. I don’t go,it’s not my scene.Have taken someone a couple of times a few years ago.Got nothing against horse racing or the sulky job.I’m more into football and boxing.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave we have loads of woollybacks up here, in fact i see there’s piece of local lamb ready to go in the oven for tomorrow’s lunch, so just keep the wag and drag laddie where he is, ours are the “black faced” variety ugly bleeders but the meat is good, always try to buy local, remember a farmer from mid Wales just waving off a load of lambs just as i arrived with a prefabricated outbuilding he said this an annual thing he sent them to Bedfordshire because he had so little grass for fattening purpose needing what he had for his breeding stock and he added that when they was returned it would take three motors to bring them back for sorting out for auction, just wondering was he taking the p""s or does that really happen, but the outcome of the job was by the time i got tipped my time was well and truly up and he gave me accomodation which included a Welsh lamb evening meal a supper and a huge breakfast and they would’nt take payment, and i never got treated like that very often, we even went to the pub after the meal for a few pints but i did insist on paying my corner, “honest”.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,
You are quite right, they do take sheep from Mid Wales down into England for fattening up.Some of the Farmers from this area have ground rented all over the place.Quite a few have livestock lorries for moving animals to pasture’s in other parts of the country.I don’t like lamb myself, neither does Tracy,we both like beef, she likes pork as well.I prefer boiled bacon which we are having for our meal this evening. I can well believe the hospitality you received, some of the hauliers I know haul roots for feed to the farms in Wales, and they say the further you go into Wales, the better you are treated, they are very often given breakfast or a meal when they arrive at a farm.
Cheers Dave.
