Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Hi Ianto,
I think it’s their precast division,as far as I know they just make beams at Dolyhir now, they moved the concrete block plant to Moreton On Lugg near Hereford about three years ago.Its still a blow for Dolyhir as I would imagine there are several jobs involved. There has been rumours of these quarries going soon.
Cheers Dave.

Does Dolhyr still have reserves or’s it worked out? These quarries getting mothballed left right and centre is getting stupid now; Including extinct sites we’ve lost Cassington and Northmoor (Hanson). Worsham and Broadway (Smiths, though I think Broadway’s running a bit longer due to unsold stocks), Wick’s almost done (Cemex) and Wickwar struggles with demand now. Hansons’ at Horcott (Fairford) has just about had it and Multi-Agg (Earthline) at Kempsford is just a part-time tip now. Radley (Tuckwells) is gone and J Curtis is barely running at Abingdon. Oh, and Sands and Gravels at Standlake’s been gone for about 10 years.
Hansons’ have shut quite a few of their block plants recently-Stanton Harcourt, Ringwood, Nuneaton, Stewartby and I think maybe even St Ives-my father in law does Conblocs welding.

Hanson Clee Hill have layed off all the production staff until February. Its bad news for them guys, but it doesnt bode well for us hauliers either.

hi dave hope your feeling better .
isint it odd that certain quarry companies are still putting presure on owner drivers to buy new trucks bearing in mind theres very little work about and about to get a lot worse.regards martyn

Hi Nathan,
Dolyhir has plenty of stone for a few years,as has the Strinds, they aren’t closing the quarry, just the beam plant. The Gore is the one with less reserves, probably about ten years at a guess. They have got two mothballed quarries,Nash near Presteigne and Rhayader which have both got massive reserves.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Mark,
Sorry to hear that, only thing that might help is this frost when it comes out of the ground, enough of damage was done earlier in the year, but this lot now is far woorse, and they can’t just ignore the state of the roads when they start breaking up.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Martyn,
I think a lot of hauliers are going to be hard pressed to hold onto the lorries they already have.Quite a few this way have packed the job in,with several more looking for a way out. Most of the vehicles except for a couple of firms are getting older, there are quite a few running vehicles seven year old and older.I think if they were told to update, there would be a big revolt for better rates, perhaps thats whats needed.
Cheers Dave.

They were told this way Nathan to update their lorries a few years back.A few of the tougher souls ignored it,and one ran a 16 year old F6 until he gave up last year and got a job with the quarry.
Cheers Dave.

Thats what I call bad luck Dave if you missed out by one day!!! We would have all been kneeled round your crib bearing gifts of gas oil to-morrow!!! I hope you don’t make that little fella kip in that kennel in weather like this? I wouldn’t make “carryfast” sleep outside in this lot!!! well I might if he was annoying us!!Anyway Dave I hope you are able to surmount your recent bout of ill health and I will take this opertunity to wish both Tracey and your goodself a peaceful and pleasant Christmas day,and I look forward to a bit of banter over the holiday. In the meantime keep warm and well rugged up at night, sounds like I’m talking about one of my Horses!!! Kindest regards Dennis.

Best wishes to you and Anne,Dennis.Archie our little Cairn only goes in that kennel when Tracy is after him,he sleeps inside,he doesn’t want for anything. The health issue is getting better slowly.I don’t fancy having this lot again,as soon as I’m completely clear of it,I’m off to my GP for a jab against pneumonia, had one about 15 years ago, never had a cold or anything for several years, said about having it updated a few years back, only to be told it lasts for life, well we know different to that.Well rugged up this way Dennis, got a boiler and a rayburn,so we have heat even in the event of a power cut.Enjoy your day Dennis, have enjoyed te battle of wits with you over the last year and look forward to more.
Cheers Dave.
