Welfare and Security [Merged]

Can I ask you for your opinions with regard to the fact that there are NO proper welfare or secure parking facilities at the end of M57 & M58 heading to or from the docks at the North end of Liverpool. Given the expansion of the docks to allow the super container ships in, the need for a large secure facility is even more important. Let me have your views.

Scammel, you are correct. There is no secure parking in the area. Drivers use the service road on Dunningsbridge Road, or the Dock Road. There are no washrooms or toilets. There is a serious problem already, and one that is set to become even worse.
There are no parking facilities on the docks. In the local paper today, Peel Ports and the RHA have met with some local hauliers to discuss the woeful turnaround times in the port. I bet parking was not on the agenda.
Parking is only part of the problem. They have reduced the road out of the port from two lanes to one as well. I would love to hear the thinking behind that. I don’t think they realise the amount of new traffic that will be generated if the port is successful. Nor do the local residents!
Also, when it is winded off, where are the trucks going to go? It just does not have the space or facilities to cope. The Sayers ‘jiffy van’ will make a killing!

its the same all over the country mate. land is expensive, builders are expensive, how much do you think it costs to build a truckstop? how much land do you think you need to purchase  do you think hauliers will pay what you need to charge to even recover your outlay in 20 years time?
If you think its a viable business, then do it. obviously no one else thinks it is, so they don’t do it.

Thanks for your replies, I am positive this thread will attract further comments, at least I hope so. I wrote to Sefton Council last year to remind them of there “Duty of Care” according to Section 17 of the Crime and Disorder act, yet to receive a reply. It would be great if collective arguments were put forward in support of a large service area (the site of the old Peerless refinery for instance)
We in the haulage industry at ground level deserve better consideration, so again I ask for comments or experiences in this area, I`m
not politically motivated, I just want to improve our well being.

What has your company done to provide you with parking, it is them you work for

Why is everything the haulier/drivers problem? Customer wants goods exporting. Haulier turns up with truck, and takes it to dock for agreed rate. Docks are only interested in getting ship in and out, so road transport can queue all day. Haulier gets out of dock with no hours left. Exactly who is at fault here? Should haulier budget for one vehicle movement a day? We are not talking about an hour or so here, you can spend an afternoon or more stuck in Seaforth Docks. What other industry would put up with losing so many unpaid man hours? Is it now the hauliers fault that said driver is out of hours and looking for somewhere safe to park and relax?
If the docks invite so many trucks in,knowing they could be there hours, then there should be some services provided for those drivers. If they can guarantee a short turnaround time then it is not a problem, but as they have proved time and time again, Peel Ports are a small minded company who employ militant, workshy monkeys who seem to really begrudge a smooth working environment, and see trucks as a hinderance.

You only seem to comment on parking issues and TBH a 10 year old could come up with more constructive comment’s than you. On the continent most industrial areas have facilities to park and in France most large factories will allow you to take your break on their premises and provide you with a shower etc, ideally when a new industrial area is built in the UK parking should be part of the plan and the building of the facilities costed into the overall price of the area, but as with most things to do with haulage in the UK people want the goods but expect the fairies to deliver them silently between the hours of midnight and 1 in the morning, and anyone who thinks that the RHA is going to stick up for drivers is away with the fairies.

The reply from Sefton council is:

“Drivers use the service road on Dunningsbridge Road”

This road is now blocked off. Problem moved to someone else.

There has been a new truck stop opened in Skemesdale a few miles away off M58.

Councils dont give a ■■■■. Drivers and companies dont stick together. End of.

Really appreciate the input guys. Ive been relieved of diesel three times inside 5 months while overnighting in this area, curtain slashed once (nothing stolen) it must have happened to more than just me…somehow the blame has been unofficially directed at me. And I KNOW I aint alone. That is why I hope to push for somewhere secure!!! With input from yourselves we can make this happen…

just come out of Seaforth. A guy, (same as me, out of hours AGAIN.) put me onto this dkmcrae.com seems there is hope after all
Just went to town in the comments box !!!

I think your comment is spot-on, so I’ve moved the topic.

I’m pretty sure it will now get the discussion the subject deserves.

OK. There’s nothing stopping the industry getting its collective hand in its pocket and building some kind of service station for trucks only if it is such a major problem. Nobody is forcing hauliers to go to Liverpool docks, after all.

I remember The Pool when you could spend a day and a half queuing in the road outside. The only facility was a greasy spoon, while the dockers had a proper canteen.

Not only parking I make negative comments on loads of things to do with drivers. I am one of them rare people who think drivers should be looked after by the company he works for, if the boss and office staff need a toilet then why not the driver they should not have to park in some layby. If a company can plan a drivers work every day then why not somewhere for him to park with food and toilets.

That’s a fair point mate, so I’ve merged the two topics into one for tidiness .

Its not the companies welfare I`m interested in. Its OURS the driver,Is this a suggestion that no-one goes to Liverpool■■? If YOU can pick your daily routings I wanna work for your outfit !!! Get real,or quiet… or am I missing the sarcasm?

I see alot of trucks parked up along the old dock road. Sometimes in between the old warehouses and such. But if there’s to be an increase in traffic then a place to stop will be needed.

Usually them stopping points on Dunningsbridge are occupies by Nolans any way.
