As it happens I’m currently reading a book about the history of Tesco. Its really interesting! They get knocked a lot but dont forget they are the worlds third largest retailer and that’s a pretty impressive fact in a country that seeks to love selling off our best assets to foreign companiesYeah & what’s even more interesting is that they were voted the worst supermarket in the UK, profits are down with warnings issued & they’ve failed in the US (thank you recession & walmart), every cloud has a silver lining after all…
By who exactly? And what makes them the worst? I think Asda and Morrisons are much worse, Asda supermarkets are like a bloody jumble sale. And why like Walmart over Tesco? All this hate for Tesco on here and all it seems to stem from is the fact they make you sit in a room and take their time. Pretty much like most RDCs then. Ive also done lots of agency work in Tesco and again, no better or worse than any other big company. Tesco are doing ok. Profits down is hardly the end of the world. You haven’t seen the back of them yet. The US isn’t the be all and end all, there’s a lot of international markets they are big in where Walmart doesn’t get a look in. And lets face it, for all their billions and billions of dollars they haven’t been able to push Asda past Tesco in the UK.
And they probably never will, It’s a British thing the love of kicking a winner 325,000 jobs one of the most successful UK companies ever and sales are actually up year on year.
It’s not just Tescos, I don’t like supermarkets at all. I use them as little as I can possibly get away with, being lucky enough to be able to go shopping in little independent shops during the day.
Possibly think myself lucky as we get time and a half for Saturday double for Sunday anything after 39hrs is time and half any b holidays is x3 and unsociable hrs from 6pm - 4am . We deliver to supermarkets and smaller shops 364
And it looks like more shops are starting to open Xmas day and soon as one start they will all follow.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Tesco Express are toying with the idea of opening for a bit on Christmas Days, a lot of Asian ran shops open and seem to do a bit of trade. I’d be surprised if they had deliveries though, can you imagine the kick off’s from neighbours if wagons started showing up outside the shops early on Xmas morning!?

The terms he quoted are Robert Wisemans terms, I used to work for them.
Don’t work for them if you value your weekends.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the least, it’ll be the poles and the people who are so far up the transport clerks arses (something they deny) that would get the Christmas Day working…

By which.co.uk, ask the people who do/did spend money in there why…!
Asda & Morrison May be much worse but they are nowhere near as bad as tesco Not every RDC or places some of us deliver to are bad, some treat us with respect & are pleasant to deliver to.
Profits being down isn’t the end of the world to you & I but to the big wigs running these things it is for whatever reason…!
The US is a major player in global trade, the UK is a drop in the ocean, literally, Walmart make more money than tesco on a global scale & that’s fact, even Carrefour beats tesco:lol::lol:
I’m not that keen on these supermarkets but I need to eat too, I can’t afford to buy expensive food in farm shops, exclusive butchers, markets etc & neither can most people in this country so we do what suits.

Sadly, that’s one of the more enduring myths, perpetuated by supermarkets with their large advertising budgets. Yes, it’s cheaper to shop in supermarkets if you’re happy to eat crap, but quality food from my local independent organic shop and my local butcher - where I do most of my shopping - works out at about the same price or even slightly cheaper than buying the same things from my “local” Morrison’s. Even if it was more expensive, more of my money stays in the local community when I shop in the small shops than when I go to the supermarkets and I like this.
I appreciate that not everyone is lucky enough to have small independent shops selling good quality food within walking distance (you can blame the supermarkets for that, to a large extent!), but you shouldn’t fall for the myth that it’s cheaper to shop in supermarkets. Like for like, it’s not, in my experience.
Wandering OT a bit, sorry …
Supermarkets are just easier. Park up outside, get everything at once, drive home. That’s why supermarkets are popular, people want to be able to park and push a trolley around - especially parents with kids who don’t want to be traipsing around multiple shops and struggling to park.
People romanticise the old fashioned style of shopping from specialist local shops, but I doubt the reality at the time was that great. Bread shop, queue up. Meat shop, queue up. Fruit & Veg shop, queue up… It must have taken forever.

No it didn’t. You bought what was needed for that day and the next and only bought what you could eat.
All this weekly/monthly shopping crap usually means over spending just to throw it away at some point in the future when it reaches its best before whatever date!! Do people really need a months food hanging around?
Rather that money was in my account working for me than some faceless supermarket.

Each to their own, but I shop at supermarkets and never throw anything away. I am pretty sure a lot of others will say the same, many people shop on a budget and only buy what they need. Somebody with money to burn/■■■■ poor at planning will waste food regardless of whether they shop at a supermarket or local shop. I think the invention of home refrigerators and freezers owes more to the reason why people bulk buy. I don’t buy into the ideology that people were happier having to cart themselves down to multiple shops several times a week, it might have given housewives something to do in the past but now everybody has busy working lifestyles it’s different, surely, unless you have a passion & interest for doing so.
40k. Nice
Do you get money off shopping/ petrol/ mobile? Pension?
My sister in law works for Morrisons, and they have been talking about opening Xmas day for the last 2 years, so before long Xmas will be a normal working day
The Monday to Friday way of life has gone forever, in the past many working people didn’t own a fridge never mind a car most peoples place of work was a walk or a bus journey away so everything was bought locally every day.
The supermarket caters to peoples needs and does so very well indeed, it would be nice to support local retailers but for most of us this isn’t practical, can you imagine your wife or partner (who now works full time) shopping every day and preparing everything from scratch, no me neither hence the need for us in transport to work 24/7.
The only issue I have is with employers who don’t or won’t pay a premium for unsociable hours and weekend work.

But that’s a bigger issue. Very few people seem to stop and think how awful it is that we now live in a society where everyone has to work all the time and there isn’t even time to cook and eat properly. I don’t know what the solution is and I freely concede that not everyone can do what I do and shop local, but it seems to me a shame that the only time people get to go shopping is on a weekend with millions of other families. If there is a Hell, it’ll be something like Tesco’s on a busy Saturday afternoon for me.
Bring back the good ole days when shops closed early on Wednesdays ,pubs closed at 11 and footie was only played on Sat afternoons or Tues nights.

‘Even Carrefour’? No a fan of them either? I know Walmart and Carrefour are bigger, hence me saying they are the THIRD biggest retailer. IN THE WORLD. (And actually they are the worlds biggest online grocer) You may not be impressed by that fact but I think its pretty good for a company built on a little rainy island off the coast of Europe. They made a mistake with the US, it was a pointless endeavour and most could see it. All big companies are looking east now. And they have been for a long time.
Asda and Morrison may be much worse but they are nowhere near as bad as Tesco. So they are worse than Tesco but not as bad as Tesco?
You haven’t given a single reason for why you seemingly hate Tesco so much. But then nobody ever can. Its just Brits love of knocking the successful as usual.
