Wearing a seat belt or not?

gnasty gnome:
Too right Gazzaman; I’d suspect that underwear would need to be proof against a ■■■■ sight more than fire, too!

The strange thing is because you are so focussed on the pace notes I was calling the next bend which I think was something like crest into left 2 long - according to the driver the last words I said before impact in a calm voice was mind the tree, as it was a forest he was kind of confused as to which tree.

After the shunt you then think - have we spun round are we facing the right way on the stage (don’t want to go the wrong way and meet another nutter coming towards you) and can we carry on…

Its all rather calm until you get to the pub.

I don’t wear one in the truck and no amount of ridiculous youtube videos will convince me otherwise, especially car ones which have absolutely no relation to truck accidents. I’ve been driving 24 years and most of my career was done in vehicles that didn’t have them fitted. Up until 6 months ago I was driving an old Scania 143 which had no belts fitted.

I never understood why those that wear seatbelts get so upset about those that don’t. Is it honestly about the fact we are somehow risking our life, or is it as I suspect the fact that some of the do gooders just can’t stand the thought of anyone breaking a law.

10/11 years ago i never used to as i thought they’d be restrictive , but one day for no real reason i put it on & have always worn it since

What Moley said. I learned to drive in the Army, where seat belts were mandatory long before they were in civvy street, so in a car the habit stuck; but some of the early HGV designs (Volvo FL6 springs to mind) weren’t particularly well thought out, the belt used to chafe on your neck, so until it became law I only tended to use them on motorways. As others have said it eventually becomes second nature.

Webby, he’s saying you’re an idiot because you’re defying the law.

Ok… Sorry i must be an idiot because im not law abiding… Do you really think “44 tonne ton” has never broke the the law■■? Thats right he sits at 40mph on single carraigeways and never does anything wrong… What a load of crap… Its “KNOBS” like him that stops people posting there opinion on these forums… :imp:

I do sit at 40 mph on sc roads because I don’t want points on my licence! I’ve broken the law many a time in the past but now I try to keep my nose clean. I was a slow learner though, just like you and paid many a fine before the penny started to drop! KNOB! :stuck_out_tongue:

I worked for 7 years before being a truck driver doing Accident Recovery and ive seen some sights in my day and it all depends how the accident happens… Ive seen people killed because they had a seat belt on and ive seen them killed because they didnt… The worst 1 i saw was a young guy that was in his car and got side swiped by a truck and it litterely tore the side out his car, he had his belt on and well Im sure i dont need to say what happened to him but hes no longer with us…

Me personally i dont and wont wear 1…

I’m going to take the advice you give in your signature!

You saying im an idiot because ive got an opinion??

No I’m saying you’re an idiot because you don’t wear your seat belt! :stuck_out_tongue:

“DOUBLE STANDARDS”

I don’t, had a wagon blow over onto its nearside many moons ago, I dropped across the cab onto my back - no harm done (at least not to me!) If I’d been wearing a belt I’d have probably hurt myself quite badly - so I don’t wear one in the wagon. My bad, and I’ll take the fine and lecture when I do get pulled.

I personally became convinced about the value of seat belts when one of the lads I worked with went through the windscreen and from that point onwards was in a vegetative state for several years until he died without regaining conciousness. In the intervening years his family not only lost a loved one but were in pretty poor financial circumstances. All because that selfish ■■■■■■■ wouldn’t wear his seat belt. They’d have been a lot better off if he’d been killed outright.

Double standards? You’ll have to explain that! I WAS a numpty in the past and now I try not to be 'cos I’ve learned my lesson, the hard way as usual!

I’m sure we’ve all broken the law, most of us probably do it every day either deliberately or unwittingly.

I think it’s fair to say though that if you post an opinion which is in direct opposition to both the law and accepted good practice and common sense, you’ll inevitably cop for some flak.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I see what your saying but if i choose not to wear a seatbelt then its my right to do so…

Doesnt make me an idiot because somebody thinks im wrong… And if people saw the things i saw when doing Recovery it might just change there opinion…

No it’s not. A democratically elected Parliament enacted a law which makes your position against the law.

Around here (northwales) the speed camera vans also take photos of you with no seat belt on, and from a long way off :open_mouth: and send a copy to vehicle v5 holder asking for the name/ address of driver, fixed penalty I think, £60 no points?

44Tonne it is very rare that i disagree with you, and often find your posts amusing, but just because something is law does not in anyway stop someone from CHOOSING not to do something.
The poster said it was HIS CHOICE. It is not and as far as i am aware never will be against any law for a person to CHOOSE. CHOICE is a human right.

Just for my 2pw i dont wear a belt either :stuck_out_tongue:

always wear one

Ok your fed up paying the fines and your no longer a bad boy… The point im trying to make is it doesnt make me an idiot just because i choose to do something different to you… I choose not to wear a seat belt because of past experiences and you choose to wear a seat belt because of your past experiences… So we have different views… :unamused:

I’ve been using the unit allocated to “God’s-gift-to-truck-driving” this week and he obviously doesn’t use it, as the buckle is always stuffed down behind the back of the seat when I get in…

Interesting contradiction, you would think that such a character would look after himself first…
Mind you, on second thoughts, he will know far more than any road safety expert, so perhaps
we should all follow his example :unamused:

Regards,
Nick.

I can’t believe some of the posts written on this thread regarding the wearing of seat belts, WHY WHY WHY would you not wear a device which is designed to save your life.As for those SO CALLED drivers who don’t wear one they obviously have scant regard for their own safety and others around them, but i would like to hazard a guess that those who have posted saying that they have been driving for years without one still class themselves as PROFESSIONAL drivers. HA PROFESSIONL,idiots more like. :imp:

ROG:
Fixed penalty fine - no points - for not wearing one
Police and VOSA can issue that FPN

IMO a sensible and morally responsible driver would choose to wear one

A good post from ROG it’s not often that I agree with him…

Cool. Can I than choose to drive away in your car? Or spray swear words on it? I know, law says no, and you propably like your car, but to have a choice, even if it’s against the law and some don’t like it is my right

And just btw: some people are idiots. And they also make choice. You can sometimes spot an idiot by seeing what choices he made

Sorry to but in, but i too have had the experience of a roll to the nearside, at the time i wasn’t wearing a belt, i like you got thrown from my seat and on my mid air travels to the passenger seat area, i sustained a nasty head injury which required a lot of stiches, and also some bruising to one leg and other injuries, so i think that you had lucky escape, the cut to my head i think was from the sunroof hinge, as the glass i can remember was pushed out by my me as i was in mid flight ( i saw it in slow motion flying thru the air into a field next to the road)

I have always worn a seatbelt in my car but NEVER worn one in my truck.
I recently watched a you tube clip of a truck being hit from the side at about 30mph. The driver was thrown out of the nearside window!!! I couldnt believe it! I now wear a seat belt.
