We won't make a drama out of a crisis

That was the wording for a TV advert for an insurance.
Well, yesterday,M5 Northbound near J 11, they did make a drama, two lanes shut for two cars, one not damaged in the hard shoulder.
The other one minor dents, two fire engines, six Police cars, two ambos, two paramedic cars,Hato. vehicles ,at least four.
Why not send in the air ambo, why not two ?
Over the top, tax payers money wasted paying double bubble for all involved in a hiviz wearing and blue flashing light convention on a Sunday afternoon.
They diverted traffic off the motorway behind the crash, then opened lane three to get things moving by the scene.
Abroad, they just push vehicles off the road to clear it, none of this standing around scratching heads ,doing nothing.
I saw an airline pilot stood in the road, maybe missed his flight.
How much did all this cost ?

maybe the driver was ill?
heart attack?
stroke?
immobilised?

or could have been a criminal incident?

And when i used to do euro work i have been diverted due to road closures , RTA , in france germany and spain

Theres nowhere as bad as here for shutting roads willy nilly surely.

A young lady over turned her car on the A303, the road was only opened, once the helicopter had taken her to hospital, then wait to see if she would not pass away.
I have seen more of this now, road shut until they get to hospital.
But a fatal, it will be shut for forensic evidence gathering for the coroners court.

They’re all on shift work and none of them get paid extra for being there just because it’s the weekend (aside of course from shift work being factored into their salary). If they’re on shift anyway surely it’s better they’re actually doing some ‘work’ rather than sitting in a tea room/■■■■■ shop somewhere, assuming there isn’t a more serious incident elsewhere of course.

its more than likely due to the fact either one of the drivers or passengers have seen the ‘whiplash’ claim £££ in front of their eyes and sat oh I cant move etc.

We are just as bad, by we I mean road users. Just yesterday morning going south on the A1M got past ferrybridge and it started to slow, then stop, then stop/start all the way to wentbridge services. Just past it, on the NB a shunt between 2 cars, next to the layby! Nothing to do with drivers going south so why the stopping. The Q NB was back onto the M18 for a small bump that could have been shifted in minutes.

Mayhem yesterday on the M42 n/b and s/b by junction 2. Minor shunt in lane three n/b, causing the knob heads s/b to slow and gawp. Inevitably, one car decided on a bit oc ■■■■■■■■■■■ action, resulting in the other car attempting to vault the central barrier… both directio s closed. Knob heads.

Guy in our village who is also a trucker sent an open letter to the paper about the apparent lack of urgency to get the A14 re-opened after an accident a week or so back.

They printed it!

Doing this on my phone so picture size might need editing.

A mechanical road-sweeper!!! good God! we’d all think that Christmas has arrived early, or there is a Fairy Godmother after-all. You’ve more chance of coming up on the lottery. i’ll put my money on it that it was ‘other’ emergency services that wanted it kept closed for some reason.

What makes you think they were on “double bubble” just because it was a Sunday? As far as I know Sundays are a normal working day for fire, police, ambulance etc

Yes that’s correct, weekends, Bank holidays, Christmas, New Year, none of these exist if your rota says you’re working, a social life just doesn’t happen when you work silly shifts. i.e. 3 earlies, 3 lates, 3 off. 3 “float” (either earlies or lates) 3 nights, 3 off.

Bank Holidays are a different kettle of fish - certainly for police and as far as I know for the other services. Those are paid at double time (but only the actual public holidays - the rest of the weekend is a normal working day).

emergency services are paid their salary not matter what day it is. If you are scheduled to work a weekend/bank hol then it’s at your normal rate

Emergency services can only respond to the information they are given, they don’t have a magical crystal ball showing them what’s happened. A certain type of road and certain trigger words on the phone calls will dictate what type of response the incident will get.

Not in my experience (police at any rate - can’t speak for the other services, although I’m pretty sure they are the same). Bank Holidays are effectively paid at triple time, as you get your normal pay for the day anyway, plus whatever hours you actually work are paid in addition to that at double time.

That certainly gives them a good incentive to hang things out.

on a documentary about motorway life i recall one of the traffic cops saying proudly he had a high number of incidents [cant recall the number ] that month, id bet theyre paid extra for attending these

Then you’d lose your bet.

why would he know and recall the exact number he had attended then?
