We won't make a drama out of a crisis

Santa:
That certainly gives them a good incentive to hang things out.

You might think so - but in my experience (I worked for a few years in our HQ Control Room) most of them would be asking when the next shift would be arriving to take over within an hour or two of their rostered finishing time.

iv just remembered, years ago, well about 10 yrs ago a local parttime firefighter was prosecuted because he had been ringing 999 on his mobile phone pretending there was a fire in a local pub and other places. he did this because he was paid extra for every shout that he went on . Got caught because he did it so much it was every week and the service got suspicious of the false alarms

Part-time firemen get paid a fee for being on call and for every call out. Full time firefighters get paid a weekly wage and no extra for call outs.

corij:
why would he know and recall the exact number he had attended then?

For much the same reason that lorry drivers know how their “green band” or “harsh braking” performance compares to their colleagues’.

Just like this
