Watford gap services

Now this might seem a daft question [i leave myself open to ridicule]but after 30+yrs passing the place and bearing in mind the place is well north of watford how did
watford gap get its name?
regards dave.

Pinched this of wilkepedia.
The Watford Gap is located at a minor gap between two slight hills in the county of Northamptonshire, England. Engineers from Roman times onwards have found it to be an appropriate route connecting the English Midlands with the South East.

In a width of 400 metres (0.25 mi) the A5 road, the West Coast Main Line railway, the M1 motorway and a branch of the Grand Union Canal all traverse the gap in parallel
Cheers Dave.

I occasionally still refer to it as the Blue Boar, and get some very quizzical looks for other drivers, “the where”

And of course there is ANOTHER Watford Gap on the A517 between Shenstone and Sutton Coldfield, near the TV mast’s.

Our very first sets of ropes I got straight out of Elwoods rope works in Kendal, then shortly after I changed onto Nylon, they were far better as they didn’t absorb water the same as hemp did.Dennis.

It was already in when we got it Malc!! It was only a cheap little motor which I bought as an afterthought, off John McGuffie who had in turn bought it off Brady’s who had aquired it via a little firm they took over in London apparently! Neither Brady’s or McGuffie had run it and it didn’t look like it had done much work.It ran like clockwork, never missing a beat, but we could only put about 8:5 ton on it once it was plated.IIRC I sold it to a farmer for what I’d paid for it!Cheers Dennis.

I remember before it was open the ‘in place’ to stop was the ‘Busy Bee’ on the A1 north of Watford… every school outing to London involved a stop there

Once the ‘Blue Boar’ opened it fast became the place for idle teenage drivers to take their birds after a night at the pub.
