Was I Wrong ?

I finished a drop, & my next collection & last job was half hour drive away & not due to pick up for another 3.5 hours. So I decided to head for a local MSA to wait out for a couple of hours or so. However to get there ment going 4 miles/ 5 minutes in the wrong direction to the next collection.
When my gaffer found out what I’d done he hit the roof for wasting diesel, telling me I should head straight for the next job & waited around at a local supermarket cafe or something.
The way I see it, I wasted 8 miles or around 3litres/£3.50 of diesel to park in a safe area out of anyones way. The real ironry though is my boss is paying me over £60 to do a job that takes an hour & twenty minutes.

Simple answer

Was you in the wrong : Yes

To my mind in a situation like that you should always get close to the next collection/delivery and then park up, if there had been any hold-ups you could have been late even though you had 3 hours to spare.

It’s not just about the fuel, it’s common sense to park up close to where you’re going so if anything goes wrong you’ve still got the best chance of getting the job done.

Sorry but I think you was wrong, though others may disagree

Why not just roll up to next drop and chance getting tipped early lol.

I’d of only gone to services if i needed food or the toilet otherwise i’d gone straight to the collection… You havnt done anything wrong in my opinion.

This is what I’d do.

Nothing wrong at all. As a rule head in the direction you’re going. But with 3 hours to kill…■■■■ that -park up with a loo, a coffee machine and food should you require it.

Remember he’s your boss but he doesn’t own you.

thats two of you who can’t read! Last drop, next collection! OP you didn’t do most wrong, keep it up! :grimacing: :grimacing:

I wouldn’t say you were wrong.

I had a situation this week where I was dispatched early and would have had a stupid wait between 1st & 2nd (last) drops, 2nd drop has restricted delivery times as the stock has to go straight onto the shop floor and can’t do that while the store is open, decided to try and find a lay bye near to the last drop on the A30 between Jcn 3 & 4 on the M3 and take my 45 break. There aren’t any lay byes on that stretch of road so ended up taking a punt on the drop point being able to take it’s delivery early and if not would have to have the break in the town center possibly creating a poor impression of the company whose liveried truck I was driving. As it happened the store took the delivery and I got out of town to have my break. Ultimately you can only make a judgement call at the time and if it comes off fine, not likely to be noticed. Get it wrong and you chalk it up to experience and move on.

How many lay byes are marked on maps, and are they available? How many service areas are marked on maps which are nearly always available.

Does the truck have a tracker fitted and to sum up you have the keys and can park where you want to.

Or if ill be a bit more civilised if I have access to a proper toilet

You was wrong. Just head on to the next drop, They may take it early, and i’m sure you could get a brew there and use the toilet.

Stuff the office jockeys that never work a fifteen hour shift they are at home with a loo and luxury while the driver is in a lay ny for the night we should tell office staff how to do their job as they are telling us how to do ours and they work three hours in an eight hour shift.

If I didnt know the area well and I knew I couldn’t arrive at the collection til the specific time I would’ve done the same.

Personally I would have gone straight to job then I know I can relax until pick up time. Thats said I dont think you did much wrong
