As a non smoker I have refused to drive trucks which are in a tip and stink of smoke and with the backing of my company, they can’t be seen to condone an illegal activity you see  ask yourselves if the office bods would work in such squalor? Then why should we.

What would VOSA chap say to a stinking cab and over flowing ashtray as they is clear evidence of illegal activity, or is it local councils who enforce smoking in the workplace?

after driving trucks for30 yrs woudnt want to work with you after your comments to say your a driver your havin a laugh lol

I know he’s got it wrong about VOSA being interested in the state of the cab, but I fail to see why he is any less of a driver because he is unwilling to put up with an obnoxious stink of stale ■■■■, illegal or not, or do you subscribe to the Billy Bigbollox smoker attitude that anybody who doesn’t smoke aint a “Reealll Man” :unamused: :unamused: and as somebody who has also been a driver for 30+ years and a non smoker, am I also a lesser driver than you?

Nobody has said he is a lesser driver but apparently he did’nt want to make a fuss but instead came on here to winge instead of putting a defect in, so now i have changed my mined about the op. Yes he is a lesser driver than me because i would have put a defect in and covered my backside, instead of slagging the company off on a public forum.

; Ive said it before , i,ll say it again before all these i dont run illegal guys jump on there soapboxes , 30 yrs ago it was stated that it was nigh on impossible to even climb into a vehicle without breaking a regulation of some kind ( it hasnt got easier) so at the end of the day its down to the individual. However if you decide that a veh is illegal ( for what ever reason ) be consistant and fair play to you, i would point out that the job will still be done the goods delivered twas always so will always be, it dosent matter what you think of the person who doses it wether they are on more/less money, Polish, Latvian , Black , White / Green or Bl…dy Blue, its the way it is its called Transport… Ive seen companies come and go big and small, firms fold today ,set up again tomorrow, same customers same deliveries, fancy waggons, fu…ed waggons , dont cross that picket line you,ll never work again, you,ll end up on a blacklist, bla bla bla bla, make your own mind up ,stand or fall by your own convictions but don,t end up like the individual i came across in the depot of a well known company, who refused to take a trailer because the top marker lights on the front were out ( the wind deflector on the unit obscured them anyway ) and after reporting it then took a trailer 3 bays away with no nearside markers at all . Did i mention that this was in Manchester, a Sat morning, one trailor was loaded for Newcastle on Tyne ,the other loaded for his home depot of Rugby and the forcast was for more snow.

OK not in them words but same meaning aint it?

I dont smoke but i accept others do.if the cab is full of ash and the ashtray is spilling out then sod it iam not going out in it.get the manky a hole who left it like a chimmney to clean is crap out.then i will drive it.i do not leave cans, wrappers or anything else behind.you may not like like or agree but smoking in trucks aint allowed full stop, the least you can do is tidy up

I dont care whether a driver smokes or doesnt i dont care of there
Short or tall thin or fat, i look for a driver who knows his job, can drive our trucks , can get on with our customers and the other drivers, you got to be a grafter and a realist. The jobs not what we want it to be, when a bulb goes you change it, if antyre goes you help the fitter change it. If a driver by your side needs your help i expect uou to help him, even if he is a foreigner, i expect you to be part of our small team, the most important part lf this is your attitude and outlook. For my part, i will do my best in difficult times i will tip your trl on a sat morning and load it on a sunday, if you run out of time on a friday i will come out and rescue you to get you home, you can borrow my van,use my phones and i will help you out as much as i can. I dont know if my drivers respect me, thats for them to answer but hey ho. We do our best.

when i used to go for interviews i would find as much info on the company as poss, as many do on here, i would try to find out if they run bent, look after the vehicles, staff ect,so if i turned up for a interview and got shown the truck in question, or say lets have an assessment in this truck, then i would simply walk away ive wasted my time and you too…

and i do get my hands dirty,as i do a lot of fitting and repairs more then driving now, and my boss respects me for what i do, but he knows i would refuse to drive a truck like the one in question, all this hassle as been bought on by a company who could,nt even give a cab a sweep out/blow out with a airline and spray some air freshener/sanitiser maybe 15, 30 mins max the day before an agency bod was expected. i,m sure the boss would soon complain if his office bin wasnt emptied by the cleaner

The trouble is. There arn’t a lot of firms like that left, and there arn’t a lot of drivers like that either.
The only way to sort out the job is to bring back roping and sheeting, They’ll be off stacking shelves in no time.

I really hope I never have to be an employed driver again.

As for the op I’d be surprised if we ever see him again.

Opinions vary, as do standards. It was his choice to walk away, he handled it his way.

As for defending the company, I don’t recall him naming them■■? Had an employee of that company
A) not of been on here,
B) not of been tipped off about the events leading upto, and the making of this post,
Then this post would of probably died out within a page or so.

The clue was in the title ?

Was I in the right ?

Not, make me look foolish for asking a simple question!!!

yes Rob, the clue was in the title, but, unfortunately, the OP made himself look foolish by changing his story after someone who works for the company challenged him about the only part of the vehicle that would have warranted the refusal to drive

on first reading the OP’s post, then, yes, he was in the right to refuse the truck

but, after he changed his story, sorry, he was in the wrong, and made himself look foolish

that is just my opinion, some may agree, some may disagree, and personally, i don’t really care either way

Amazing the lengths smokers go to to defend their filthy stinking unhealthy habit that affects other people.

I agree entirely it’s got to the stage on here where you (personally I don’t give a ■■■■ ) have to watch every word in case you get put down/ridiculed/patronised or generally taken the ■■■■ out of. The guy said he was new to the job so that should have been sufficient for some on here to lay off a bit and give the lad a bit of constructive advice.

are you suggesting that i am a smoker?

shuttlespanker:
are you suggesting that i am a smoker?

I’m not suggesting anything and haven’t a clue whether you personally smoke or not. The comment was as a result of my observations of the various posts above from smokers, often defending what they consider is their right to break the law and disrespect fellow drivers and the companies property.

The OP was ABSOLUTELY right in course of action. He made a judgement of the vehicle as required and he found an issue with the vehicle coupled with a get it on the road attitude which caused him to have doubts about the roadworthiness of the vehicle. In deciding not to potentially jeopardise HIS LICENCE he passed. Reassurances from others at the scene or otherwise are neither here nor there. Yes you do get used and abused by some as an agency driver but you don’t have to apply the Vaseline for them!
