May be if you read ALL & not just take part of what I have written it means he has found a medical at £47 which is cheaper than you quoted sorry but dont think he will get 1 much cheaper do you

Thanks I’ll ask them that.
Had 23 hours of lessons when I was 17, passed my test 7 weeks after my birthday.
Pretty confident in a car.
I know it’s no way near a lorry but my car is pretty big and the other half won’t drive it (Skoda Superb). And I feel confident driving it and getting in and out of small spaces. It’s the gearing thing that I’m worried about!
It is possible to pass your test in less than 23hrs i did class 2 in 11hrs & have done 6hrs class1.
One more 2hr lesson(8th Oct) then test (9th Oct).
Be confident and listen to your instructor
GOOD LUCK
Thanks I really cant wait to get behind the wheel of such a big vehicle!
I always let HGVs go out of junctions and things. And let them change lanes. I just sit back and think I’ll be driving one of those one day. Can’t wait!

Maybe if you pulled that stick out your arse you would realise I wasn’t directly talking to the OP. I was talking in generality so other who see this thread would know.
I read the thread fully from post one before commenting!

Yep £47. Hope I pass.
So a weeks lessons could be enough? Just doesn’t seem that long to get the hang of such a big vehicle.

A lot of people pass on a week course. I had Monday to Thursday behind the wheel and then a bit of a mini lesson on the Friday morning before heading over to the test centre. You’ll be surprised how quickly it will come together.
Hi. I’ve just passed my class 1 last week. I only started my journey back on June when I had my medical, then had to do my theory, hazard perception and mod 2 cpc in 1 go. All passed 1st time. I started my class 2 lessons and after the 1st 2hr lesson he said I’d only need 7 more 2hrs then I’ll be ready. It’s surprising how fast you pick things up. Anyway passed that class 2 test 1st time. Then I went onto my mod 4 cpc test and past that then rebooked in for class 1. With using the same instuctor I only needed 6 x 2 hrs. And had that test last Monday. So all in all it’s took 13 weeks from start to finish. The worst part is waiting for licence to home back from DVDs as I couldn’t do nothing without it.
The problem I’m having now is finding a Job with no experience!!!
Good luck anyway hope it works out for you!!
Yeah everyone’s got to start somewhere. How hard is it finding a job with no experience?
Throwing some trailers about on a farm is good, that it was i did,i failed my LGV test 3 times.
Well being honest I’m really struggling. Must of emailed my cv to 30+ companies and so far only 1 lead. It’s only as they are desperate for drivers, but the pay ain’t that good but it’s a start, which is what I’m after. That way I would be gaining the experience. I could always try elsewhere after I’ve got the experience behind me

Its definalty possible, i passed my Cat C first attempt with 4 minors, had 4 days training and took my test on the friday Dont think you ever get the hang of that size vehicle in such a short space of time theres always going to be situations you come across that will be new and you wont have someone sat next to you. I passed my test in May and am still in my old job driving vans (saving to do my C+E and CPC then the job hunting begins) and i will be bricking it the day i actually start a job driving a lorry on my own, even a differnt make of lorry will be strange until you get used to it same as jumping between cars.
Easily possible thats what I did.
Couple weeks later sat my bus and all I had to do was drive from the instructors yard to the test centre and that consisted of my practice.
It’s not that hard to drive something large. I do it now without a second thought as to somethings size…

Log off and go knocking doors mate.
Its way too easy to just delete an email and forget about it. Chuck your boots, gloves, hi-viz and any other bare essentials in your car and go out giving CV’s in person.
There are an awful lot of people here on trucknet who have got their first break by being in the right place at the right time.
hi mate, ive been in your situation 4 years ago, hers a brief encounter of my story viewtopic.php?t=37570&highlight= i had no experience when mccarthy haulage took me on although i was 30…mccarthys will give you a chance with no experience if your suitable…they would rather have the right person with no experience then the wrong person with lots of experience.pm me if you wish for any details…i passed class 2 and 1 first time with phil at gatewen and done my adr there too.like i said pm me for any info if you wish
Alan, you mention early in your post you are worried about the gearing. From reading your further posts I get the impression you are a confident driver and very keen. I reckon you will have no major problems with changing gear in a truck no matter what gearbox arrangement there is (they do vary somewhat ) in any case your instructor may well have you driving about in a big open space to get to grips with the vehicle and its gears/brakes/clutch/mirrors etc before you are let loose on the public
just a thought…have you visited any local training companies and discussed an assessment drive? you might find you don’t actually like it, be good to find out before you shell out on a medical etc
Best of luck

Hi, thanks for the reply. I’ll have a read through your story.
So Gatewen were pretty good then? You’d recommend them?

I think I’m just nervous of the unfamiliar. Once I’ve been there and had that 1st lesson I’ll almost certainly be fine.
LR18-8 on here did show me the gears on his truck when I picked up his theory book and DVD (thanks again LR18-8).
It seems a lot less complicated seeing it, than it does reading online.
I am confident in a car, and I passed my test fairly quickly, I just hope this transfers over to driving lorries.
I thought I’d need my provisional for an assessment drive? I’m sure I’ll love it though. My dream would be a tramping job, cross the channel and abroad. I know there are dangers but the idea of taking to the road for days, and sleeping in the cab fills me with excitement.
I’ve driven across countries in cars and stayed over night in the car and loved it.The thought of being paid to do this is great!
yes you do need your provisional for an assesment drive, you also need to have passed your theory test and hazard perception test before they will let you take it out on the road. Had mine last week and absoulutely loved it, am all booked up for lessons starting 9th Oct now

Yeah this is what I though. Just confused me as he said do an assessment drive before forking out on a medical. But I need a medical to get the provisional and do an assessment lol.

If you are worried about the 2yrs experience thing, ring some agencies up as they have some clients that will accept new drivers. ADR Network who I do most of my work for will mess you around a bit with start times some times but give me stacks of work and NFT at Crick (Asda and multi user side not sainsburys part) do take newly qualified drivers.
Hope this puts minds at rest!
