Have you ever just walked out of a terrible job without handing in your notice or having another job lined up?
If so how did it work out … Where you able to find another job easily? What excuse did you give for leaving (walking out) of your previous job, and did your new employer check up with the job you walked out of?
Also if you walk out of a job, are they allowed to with-hold pay for days worked since your last pay day?
I’m thinking of following scores of previous co-workers and walking out and going on agency.
I think the way things are at the monent you would have to think very carefully about just walking out(just cos your mates are all jumping does not mean it’s the right decision for you).
Have you considered the following:
will you find a regular income elsewhere (we all know agencys promise the world and you maybe lucky to gey any work for days).
when you apply for different jobs they may ask for reference from your previous employer (usually your most recent)
If you have a family to support can you afford to be out of work, and for how long.
I think everyone is getting dry humped at the moment mate. A [zb] job is better than no job at all.
I did. I’ve never been unemployed since leaving school. I’ve never left a job on bad terms or without having something to go to and always worked my notice.
This all changed at my last job. The owner was a ■■■■■ His wife was worse and his stepkids were a waste of space but beyond reproach.
After insisting I break the law (which I refused) I got back and told him I wouldn’t be in the next day. His reply was that I had to as I couldn’t just quit. I laughed and never returned. He tried to withhold payment for the days worked since the last payday but a strongly worded letter sorted that quickly.
I walked into an agency and was put into placement where I now work permanently and have been for 2 years. (I was lucky in this respect as I knew the agency office staff from the job I just left)
All this happened 7 weeks before Xmas with a wife and 3 kids. It was a worrying time but all worked out or the best. I’m earning more, doing less hours and doing easier work and I’m a changed person now.
Mine is a successful story but I’m sure there are 10 horror stories for every good one.
There’s plenty of horror stories on here about agencies and lack of work but the decent drivers don’t seem to struggle as some of the less able do to get work.
Whatever you decide, good luck.
I have after one day never bothered chasing the money got a job next day but this was a few years ago when there was loads of work about.
If you have worked there a while its different as you have a gap to explain on your cv as your not going to get a good reference.
Agencey is a gamble if you have family mortgage etc. You will probaly be busy now to xmas but come january there wont be much.
If your going to leave why not just pup your notice in all they can do is give you crap work for a week.
I’ve done it once after 6 weeks of ball ache. I was much younger and had no family to support was still living at home.
I’m fairly lucky in that I have experience in different areas, but if you’re limited to driving or if you have limited experience in this industry then I’d line something else up first, especially if you have a family.
I wouldn’t dream of ding it now with the commitments I have now.
Work your notice. Not worth the hassle. You never know when the dream job might come up and that blots the copy book.
I once got a job because the interviewer asked if he offered me the job would I quit my present company immediately and walk out if necessary. I was the only one who said no regretfully I would have to give and work notice. Obviously he then knew I wouldn’t shaft him.
Yup, only been there half an hour. One thing I won’t stand is being lied to and once it was obvious (and it was) that I didn’t have a hope in hell of doing what I’d been employed to do I said bye bye. Stopped in a yard on the way home and managed to get some work the next day.
I don’t want to be the richest person in the graveyard so if a job is really bad I’ll leave it for someone who does.
If a group of drivers walk at the same time, surely the same effect would be had as if the company went bust? Loads of drivers all vying for the same job. Do like my ex colleagues are doing; They’re waiting to see if my new job is any good, then putting their names down.
Erm, I’m not sure I have to answer this, but the short answer is yes, more than once.
I’ve left a bus full of passengers with an inspector in Manchester Town Centre, I’ve left a bus full of school kids at a Police Station, I’ve quit a job after an hour, quit a job after 1 day and 1 hour and thrown the keys at a boss after 4mths in the job and the rota changed then a nasty phone call off him because I didn’t know I should’ve been in work - the new rota said “Wayne: DO (day off)”.
I’ve always found work, maybe not always good work, but always work. I’ve quit jobs and ended up doing a worse job, but as long as I’m not treated as bad then I use it as a stepping stone.
As someone else said, do what you want, life is short and there’s not really any winners or losers, we all end up as worm food
I have walked out on just two jobs in 37 years, left a few others after a week or so but worked the obligatory 1 weeks notice.
I drove home from Italy and cleared my cab on one job, the other one I told the TM exactly what I thought of him and the ‘2 bob’ company and strode out of the door feeling like a weight had been lifted from me.
Would I do it again?..if the circumstances dictated that course of action, then yes.
One job i had, I had had a ■■■■ time there, and had enough. Got back to the yard, parked up and found the boss. Said to him “I will do you a deal”
“whats that?”
“I don’t work for you, You don’t have to pay me. Bye”
I walked out on a job before but didn’t say anything just got my stuff and walked out while the manager watched, worked out alright boss still gave me a good reference.

Best one I saw, driver stripped down to his grollies, ramming his green shirt, tie and trousers through the hatch toward a cowering traffic planner after putting the truck keys down the drain in the yard. The look on the driver’s wife’s face as she arrived in the yard to collect him and seeing him almost naked in the ■■■■■■■ rain will stay etched on my memory forever. Priceless!
I once got so ■■■■■■ about by a boss that was a subbie for Fowler Welch, that I told him to stuff it and cleared the cab out, got a lift home and told him his truck was in Spalding, he still paid me my weeks lie time though.

I would say that just walking out of your job is something that people don’t plan. I’ve never done it, but I would think it’s normally the result of an abused individual snapping under the pressure. If you’re taking the time to ask the opinions of others (never a bad thing), and weighing up your options (also never a bad thing), then in my opinion you should take the advice of midlifetrucker.
I would give in my notice, work one more week (how hard can it be?) and leave on good terms. No future employer wants to be left in the lurch, and who knows, his reference might just make the difference between getting a decent job, and not getting it.
It’s your decision, but don’t let your pride stop you from looking at the “bigger picture”
A very topical subject for me this week , some of you may have seen some previous posts about working for a complete knobber over the last 3 half years , well this week it has come to a head , theres been issues with deliveries due to wrong info been given to me , thus not finding places , ringing office & told bring it back , issues about overtime , dropping heavy items in an accesible place with lorry & hiab just to be phoned to go back & move it ,even though there cars , cables poor access etc , last week I had an abusive rant from the main boss with this knobber sat besides him, (might aswell been on his lap) the line that did it that day was were going to back him (knobber) we’ve seen drivers come & go , some can do it some can’t , you’ve got to decide what sort of driver you want to be…
Then todays event has done it again , I’m gettin married in a few weeks & going on stag do next weekend 7th Sep, said to current manager 6 weeks ago about having the Monday off work after stag do unpaid as I’ve used all holidays , reminded him 3 weeks ago as he forgot & was away , reminded him yesterday as he forgot again , just before I left today I asked what was said , was told office ok’d it but half hour later knobber phoned to say , can’t have it as have no holidays & no cover is available so I will have to be in , that same Monday lorry is going into garage for major service & will be off the road , you can imagine what will happen if I phone in sick that day .
Last month we had a record sales month since branch opened 5 years ago , we had bosses son doing van work when he could be bothered to turn up so bulk of deliveries done by me (previous van driver left), he goes back to university next week so plan is for me to do it all , were 5 drivers down as they’ve left & not yet been replaced …I’m ready to walk , have a job I’m waiting to hear on , its £40 more a week 5 am start multi dropping , but no knobber ,

Shall I give notice or just walk ?
This sounds so familiar, I was convinced we worked at the same place when I read it!
Just a few weeks ago I was told ‘You poxy drivers are ten a penny’. Quite funny when the agency cannot supply a single driver when one of the drivers is due off on his two week holiday.
Quite obvious that we are not ‘ten a penny’ eh?

I vote you walk without notice.
If I am going to walk it will be when I have a job offer & confirmed start date & its only me as the driver , the trouble is I’m too good to them & will probably give notice , it depends what happens in next few weeks , I know they will struggle to find a driver as their reputation precedes them & the knobber is well known for his attitude , I would like to punch him out the way out. I did think bout just not turning up one day & when they ring just say I’ve started a new job or not bother answering…
