Wages, quite a surprise!

For the last 8 yrs I’v worked for John Mitchell in Grangemouth. I recently accepted an offer of a job with Asda in Falkirk (fridge wagons) & had a start date, but due to issues, it’s been put back for a week. Not really a problem for me, I’d handed in my notice to Mitchells & really didn’t want to suggest staying for another week, so I made enquiries with the local Driver hire office with a view to doing a weeks local work, just to pass the time.

Anyway, Mitchells pay £8.05/hour (don’t laugh!) & this agency have offered me 5 days work with a local house kit manufacturer, driving a 7.5 tonner, paying £9.25/hour!! For a tiny puddle jumper flatbed lorry! Couldn’t believe the difference in pay rates.

Why bother driving general haulage trucks?? :open_mouth:

Nobody does apart from the mugs on here who slate agency drivers.
Don’t forget your hi viz vest and bag for life.
Compulsory requirements of today’s agency driver apparently.
And almost forgot the limp as well

I’ll try & get through the 5 days without them! lol

During that week of driving the 7 and 1/2.
Don"t tell anyone driving an artic that you normally drive a class 1.
They will never believe you. :stuck_out_tongue:

Congratulations! you have reached transport nirvana, why would anyone choose general before trollying is beyond me.

It will take you a time to adapt take my advice and stick with it, I started on a crap start band (00:00 04:00) I toughed it out and got my preferred late PM start time as for the agency guys £12.50 for days £15.00 for weekends, for profit transport is a mugs game, it was finished years ago.

Worked for BP on the tankers from 1990 til 2008, that was the best paying job I’v had, but since taking redundancy 5 yrs ago, I’v been working out of a local sawmill monday to friday running from Grangemouth to Inverness & Aberdeen mainly. Has to be the best job workwise!

still canny suss out who u are. JR. X BP . I was talkin to bp at Girvan on Thursday ?

Haven"t driven artics regularly for over 10 years. Not done general in the last 18.
Currently on what some would class as a rather mundane/boring job driving a class 2 on what i consider a decent wage and a while back i thought i would
apply for a trolley job as they seemed to be all the rage.
After weighing it all up couldn"t be arsed with the 4 on ,4 off,5 on 3 off . . etc.
Is there anywhere that does this kind of work on a Mon - Fri with the option of overtime on a Sat.
(non agency)

Driver Hire have a bad reputation for putting drivers straight onto an umbrella scheme, so do be aware that out of the £9.25 hour, you could be paying around £26 week to have your payment made to you and missing out on many other significant benefits too.

I have said before I would be very happy to drive a sprinter if I could earn the same money as class1,[class1 26 yrs and sick of it]unfortunately no van job pays the same as class1

My missus buys heaps on the web and the UPS guy I get to see regularly , he tells me he is on £13.20 ph…for an overgrown van on days with a regular run M-F and every other sat ! Ok I know it’s a brown uniform but …

Some guys prefer long haul. Personally doing short little hops would do my head in.

Think I said it before, I’ll keep my name out of these forums. But I’m neither Dougie M or Billy P (he turned up at Mitchells too, a couple of years ago. If you’re still in touch with them, maybe they’ll give you a clue. lol

I found supermarket work quite depressing.

I used to think the very same a few years back.
Nowadays, whilst tootling around doing semi local work, listening to all the traffic hold ups on the radio,it reminds me why i would never go back to uk distance work.Euro maybe but even that does"nt sound appealing anymore.

Been doing trolly work 10 yrs now good pay 1overnite not bad a job as u tkink

It sounded good to me too, good pay rates, share-save scheme, £2/month inhouse gym membership & 10% discount card for the stores, plenty overtime & it’s a 5 minute commute from my house…could’nt turn it down.

However, on a side note. 3 weeks ago I was given a new Scania, & some of Mitchells men actually thought that I would change my mind about leaving simply because I was driving a brand new unit! It made me laugh, but I reckon some of these idiots would do just that! :open_mouth:

Take asda job they have good kit to work with

for what its worth I hated ASDA. One of the worst jobs I have ever had money or not.

Right, my first ever agency shift is complete. I started at 0800hrs & did one run/drop down in the Scottish Borders & back in the yard at 1420hrs. The gaffer says ‘that’s it for today, see you in the morning’

Hmmmm…taking off my half hour break, that only gives me 6 hours! Phones the agency & they tell me it’s a minimum of 8 paid hours per day, regardless. So I’m quids in…why didn’t I get into this agency lark years ago?? lol :sunglasses:

you could not have picked a worse time to start agency driving now they charge for carrier bags.
