Vosa walk around check legal requirements

Hello can anyone help with the following ;

For the past ten years i have been using the RHA defect book everyday as a walk around check sheet and defect book. it’s easy and simple to use. We have a new transport manager who has produced a weekly check sheet (downloaded off the net) with about 10 times the amount of boxes to tick including…fuel amount, milage, smoke sign in cab, etc …the normal check sheet you would expect at a big company like morrisons using many drivers.
the thing is the company only has two class 2 trucks…so hardly complicated to work things out.

He tells us that this check sheet is a legal requirement of vosa and that the RHA defect book is not. Can anyone tell me what vosa legally require ? …surely not the amount of fuel, milage, drop off points etc?

Many thanks

I believe all that is required is a standard defect sheet, I.e. No defects, Minor defects, VOR.

Companies or more accurately new employees looking to make a name for themselves (in this case as a bit of a ■■■■), may go overboard and want more complex paperwork.

If your paid for the extra time it takes, (if any) and your new TM is aware of his ■■■■ muppetry then just crack on.

My companies policy is to show 15mins at start of the shift, no probs if that’s what they want that’s what they get.

I believe the official definition is ‘some time’ is needed for start of shift checks. The definition of some is anybodies guess.

Oh and for good measure I also add 15mins on for my end of shift checks, in fact such is my length of checking that I’m very intimate with any truck I drive.
Hardly any time left for work if I chuck in a midshift check or three.

There’s no legal document…

For walk round checks. If there was, drivers would have been getting done for not having it decades ago. You should show time at the start of your shift for actually doing the walk round but, you could also use that time to hop off for a smoke.

Sounds like yer new TM is a knob.

Good luck with that.

print this off and leave it on yer notice board

defect sheet, book or app is fine as long as there is a record of a walk round check.there is no requirement to have the defect report with you if you are stopped !!! but this will force dvsa to pay your employer a knock on the door the rha book is legal and i would not change it if the company only had 2 trucks.unless the vehicles are specialist vehicles ie asphalt trucks,drainage/jetting ect then you might want the drivers to check certain equipment is there or working before leaving the depot.

Basically company’s can set their own requirements. As a driver you are legally required to check the vehicle is legal, safe and roadworthy before taking it on the road.

Keeping a record of daily checks is good policy.

Because it is a legal requirement to have a transport manager.

I thought TM stood for Tea Maker. I’ll get mi coat.

The fella sounds a real d**k making laws up to try and justify his job.
Any thing is legal as long as you make a note of it,i.e defect book etc.
Too many idiots in this industry trying to overcomplecate a simple job,I bet this bloke uses the word “compliance” in every other sentence too.

Try the DHL check sheet, the one I use daily requires me to check 41 items !!!
So you might as well just get on and do it rather than cause conflict, it’s not worth the stress …

Ours have 51 boxes on them!!! Then we’ve got to go over the same 51 boxes on our ‘return to depot’ checks.

The guy has nothing useful to do, so is bored or going to claim your previous TM was useless and you need to immediately change a load of things with no proof that anything is actually wrong.

I’ve worked for numerous companies now and every one has different check sheets with different complexities, but thats because some combined items. Plus might get extras such as HIAB.

How he thinks the no smoking sign will ever be of concern to VOSA he’s delusional. Ask him for the legal document which proves what he claims so you can prove it to your “trucker friends”.

The same thing with H&S bods, got to keep finding things to do to justify their existence. At the end of the day the driver is responsible for making sure his vehicle is fit for the road.

At our place if you have a defect then you have to phone it in to the office who then after ■■■■■■■ about will give you a defect number to write on the check sheet. Works well at 3am when no ones awake.
