Volvo

Not a day goes by without drivers singing the praises of Volvo lorries, be it the FH , or earlier ones like the FL, F10, F88 etc.

But how many actually drive or have in the past owned a Volvo CAR?

I always thought Volvo trucks were over rated at least in the comparison of F10/FL10 v DAF 2800.

Volvo cars equally over rated although at least the 140 series was built like a tank and drove the right wheels.I think the 164 was arguably the best Volvo car and they should have made an estate version of it.

Then it all went wrong with the zb French V6 let alone the move to fwd. :open_mouth: :unamused:

But in general the Ford Granada was always the better motor in the day.Which later left the no brainer choice between BMW 5 series or a Merc v Volvo/SAAB.

Drive an XC90 been a great car well built

Me. Had two 340’s back in the mid-1990’s. Solidly built, reliable, comfortable; not the most exciting car on the planet or the most economical, but never let me down.

My favourite wagon and drag car transporter chassis was a FL12 380, rare beast, for the job it was excellent, from the days of simple unbothered-by-image engineering.

Anyway, my first car a 122S Amazon, superb but rusty as buggery.
144GLE big bumper model, that was a superb car and one of my favourites of all time.
244DL, it was ok, nothing more…cam belt snapped but non interference and easy to retime, new belt marked with equivalent perma marks on sprockets…all cars should be like this
244 DL estate, apart from its thirst it was good motor.
760 estate, by hell i thought the 244 could drink.

Last one a 940 TD estate, the one with the Volkswagen LT van 6cyl 2.4 Diesel engine, made in 93 and one of the simplest most robust cars i’ve ever had, we’ve kicked ourselves a few hundred times for selling that…interestingly in typical VW fashion the camshaft sprocket had no woodruff key, so in the event of timing being lost it was special tools only…even back then the engine maker knew how to extract the contents of customers wallets, some things never change… :unamused:

Modern cars of no interest to me, and wouldn’t give the time of day to a car with an electric parking brake so won’t be having any more Volvos.

Drive a Volvo FH for work and a Volvo V40 XC for everything else.

Very happy with it thank you and no electronic handbrake to worry about either!

Never had Volvo car but a few trucks. Can’t fault the trucks always found better then DAF MAN etc

Or just put a good old fashioned pushrod V8 in it.

I had a 940 2 litre turbo estate for 15 years, only sold it last year when it was 24 years old because the missus was too infirm to get in it easily, and it was streets ahead of the VW’s I had and the Partner that I now own. Never failed a test and not a patch of rust anywhere on it. I haven’t driven a Volvo truck though, nor any other non British make come to that.

Pete.

Parents had a banana yellow Volvo when I was young, not sure what model it was, all I remember was that it was full of holes and I got really wet whilst using a drive-thru carwash!

I still drive this:

1996 940 turbo. Drinks a lot but I love her. She’ll have to go eventually as can’t get parts any more - some toerag smashed the rear window and it took 6 weeks to get a replacement!

Love Volvo trucks. Once owned a 740gl estate. Bought it with 140k on the clock, put another 100k on top of that and sold it. Passed my house every day for another two years. Petrol engine as well!

Drive a mk1 fh12, and had previously a 850 had it six years, only spent usual stuff onit, tyres, brakes etc… Actually looking for a decent s70 as I miss the 850!

I worked in a breakers yard briefly in the early 90s doing sales. We used to tell the buyers to buy every Volvo 3 series they could because they were forever shearing the propshaft splines because Volvo made the couplings with a cheap alloy. We couldn’t get enough of them. We were part of the Find A Part network and it was common for us to sell the same propshaft to two different people.

Had the misfortune of an S60 D2 R Design on a 62 plate. Now, this thing re-defines the meaning of awful! As far as Volvo cars go, its not that bad looking however it all goes down hill from there. The 19" rims are an odd profile/width combination making them stupidly expensive (£150+ for a cheapy). I wouldn’t mind, if the thing was actually quick. The D2 1.6 diesel is a crime against humanity. You’d get more torque from your lawnmower, and its geared very short too - 2500 revs at 70.

Then there’s the interior. Again it looks alright, and sound quality from the stereo is very good indeed. Operating said stereo however is painfully over-complicated. Never did work out how to switch the bloody thing over to aux! And you had to use aux, because there was no bluetooth. A car like that with no bluetooth?!? Seats were horrible too. Kinda like the base was a water bed and the back a plank of wood.

I think when Volvo produced this car, they must’ve worked on the philosophy of ‘You can’t polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter’

Had a 480 turbo a few years ago. Wish I’d kept it.
Used to eat Golf GTi’s for breakfast!!

Don’t get rid, it’s guaranteed that whatever you replace it with will disappoint in short order and whatever you save on fuel the replacement will cost far more in depreciation and repairs.

i’d like a Volvo Amazon
this one belongs to guy martin,it produces circa 700bhp. :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
