Hiya Dave had a V8 perkins with twin turbos i thought he was well into pulling. i thought he lived on the old A50 between
Shiptons recovery and the saltbox. well thats where i used to see the tractor when i was on the coffee job
out of nestles behind the saltbox.unless that was someone elses tractor it was a fair thing when i looked at it.

Could be time for me to go on single Grouses, or add more water! the same chap used to do lowloader work,
John that was Dave Prince .
The guy from somerset that ran low loaders and did tractor pulling was Mike Lawrence, who now has a museum for all sorts of farm machinery and trucks.
EC14 ,thats the man im thinking about ta.

hi john,
wasn’t that wally balsdon? also from the west country.i remember mike lawrence with at least one mack, blue and yellow, moved dozens of steam engines out of wood hams in barry, years ago.as an aside,i was always led to believe, that the caswell motor was an atki chassis with a 240 gardner and an f88 cab? i have been told isaac caswell loved his gardeners and his volvo’s cabs.i remember seeing it as a kid in a steel drop in old bury during the 70’s and wondered why the f88 in the que for the weigh bridge had a kirkstall axle and atki borderer fuel tank.merry christmas to you both.
regards andrew.
I’ve only just stumbled across this thread- Re the Evans of Tredegar F88with a gardner in it, IIRC it was Isaac Caswell who put a ■■■■■■■ in an F88, the guy who drove it lived by Pandy - between Abergavenney and Hereford,I used to see it parked outside his house regularly.
On the same topic - I live in Oz now, until recently you could buy an FH from Volvo here with a ■■■■■■■ in - I was working for a firm who had a 2005 (I think) Fh with a ■■■■■■■ rated at 680hp.
Volvo with a ■■■■■■■ engine I don’t see that as being unusual, loads of them about here…
I noticed someone mentioned the Spanish Dodge… the guy along the road had one with a ■■■■■■■ in it… very reoccurring fault… the fuel pump was driven by the compressor via a set of ( shims ) for want of a better work… If I remember right there were about 4 or 5 of them all bolted together in a bunch… they always split and broke, hardly a week went by when they weren’t replace, usually at the side of the road by the driver, who had it down to about 40 minutes…Other then that the driver liked the Dodge and was willing to put up with its fault rather than having any of the other trucks in the fleet…
Jeff…
The Rolls Royce Eagle ( and earlier engines ) had the pump drive driven by shims , they used to break up ,if you didnt keep your eyes on the bolts, this then caused the pump timing to slip and of course the ensuing banging and knocking with clouds of smoke used to convince many that the engine had done a piston or dropped a valve, add to that most Rolls tended to pi… oil out everywhere and the phone call saying " Its blown up " was one I received on more than on occasion. The Daf ( 21/28/33 ) also had the same idea, and Leyland 600/680 to name but a few. I still have several sets of shims lying in my workshop from when it was a regular job. I once bought a ERF C series with a 340 Roller in it , it was sold for spares at an auction because the engine was “blown” and therefore a non runner, I bought it for the cab , on looking at it in the yard a couple of weeks later we found it was only the shim prob we fixed it and ended up putting it back on the road were it ended up running for another 2/3 yrs .
NZ JAMIE:
Alan Holmes and his son both now live here in NZ and have a truck repair workshop. I’ve spoken to them before about this truck, apparenty it goes very well.
Hi nz Jamie.
Next time you speak with Alan or Gareth ( his son )
Tell him Dennis & graham Hines say hi.
My dad bought a Volvo f88 off him & had it serviced to. He has known him & his family for a long time. He also painted some trucks that Alan sold to. His a pic of his wrecker in his colours. BIG GARTH it was called.
