Volvo F86

I,ve been a bit busy with work and other things to do any work on the 86 over the last couple of months, But after Ramone told me about the one in Leeds I went to see it and after a couple of notes through the letterbox I got a email from the owner to say that he was able to sell the truck.
So a lowloader was hired and we set of to Leeds this morning not knowing how we would get it on the trailer.
The owner had a loadall type thing that just lifted the back wheels of the ground and pushed the 86 from where it has rested for the last 5 years or so and stright up on to the lowloader and then back to the farm.

So now I have loads of spare parts and the bits I have been missing

What was the total weight of this vehicle, it looks to be very heavy :open_mouth:

F86 and FB86 are my favourites in this size of lorries, and I believe that it has been more drivers then me that have begun their career in them. Maybe someone recognize this F86 visiting Sweden? I drove it on a veteran rally for commercial vehicles in Gothenburg 2007, and here I have stopped for coffee… on the right side of the road :grimacing:

I had a look at the plate today, I think it was 9.25 ton and 26 ton loaded if i remember right
The body is alloy with a plywood floor and it had low alloy sideboards when in use so not that heavy.
I am going to try and start it this week to see what the engine is like,I was told by Colin the owner that it wes rebuilt buy Volvo in
Leeds not long before it was parked up so fingers crossed it may be better than the one in the tractor unit as it’s a bit smokie with it being a shunter
and left ticking over for long periods.

You can see in this photo the fold down bunk I hope to get this recovered and fitted in the tractor unit

26 tons on a F86 sounds like it was quite a lot to haul, I think half of it was enough. But on the other hand… I was used to drive an FB88, so driving an F86 was a bit different. Where did you placed the bunk when it was time to sleep, was there space enough behind the seats or was it placed over the engine?

Here is my own F84, the baby brother of the F86  . It´s an ice cream lorry from 1975, with 105 h.p and a total weight of 12 ton… so it´s not a race truck. It´s a smaller engine, but the cab is still the same as on F86. :grimacing:

Phillip, congrats on getting hold of that 86, perserverance pays off. Its good to see another old lorry being put to use [even if as a donor to save another if not restored itself] rather than being left to waste away. Good luck.
Neil.

Looks like the original Volvo fold down bunk for the 86 shouldnt think theres many of them about, my old gaffer bought one but wouldnt buy anymore thought they were to expensive for what they were, we ended up making our own
Autotransit that Hutichison 86 was the 1st in the uk 1966 up nr where I live we bought ours off the same dealer

Did you get any info on this F86 then Phil is it a runner or just spares?

I had a go at starting the six wheeler the other day,It had run out of fuel so I checked it for oil filled it with water the turned the key and pressed the
starter button and nothing happened,so gave the fuses a wiggle and pressed it again and this time it turned over,so did this a few times then
blead the system and tried again she fired a couple of times then started on 3 or 4 then went on to all 6
I have a short video on youtube of it running I anyone knows how to link it to this pos please do so,just look under Volvo f86 and it will come up
Phil

Hi Ramone I got it for spares but Colin said it had a rebuilt engine by volvo in Leeds not to long before it was parked up, and it smokes a lot less than
the one in the unit so looks like I will swap it.
So I need to get on with the cab now

At the time when I took the photo it was in the collection of the Volvo museum in Gothenburg, but now it´s back in the UK again. So I´m really glad to have driven it, before it left Sweden. Here I have parked alongside a “colleague” at the checkpoint entering the harbour. :grimacing:

1st one i drove was a 1970 one in 1974 only thing I ever broke down with was a leaking oil feed pipe to the Turbo ,took it off & the place I was delivering had its own garage & they brazed it up & I was on my way for the price of a couple of pints
Only a little detail but hutchinson 86 has got the wrong mirror on the drivers side

err hutchinson volvo has a lot more wrong with it than the mirrorrrrrrr!!! its got the wrong cab on it think this is one of the biggest things wrong with it.should have the earlier cab with the slope front cab wings

You are entiteled to your opinion f88, but i was pleased to have one, in its day cab a better prospect than a day cab Akti ,b series ERF, Guy bigJ,leyland & AEC board across the engine hump

Hi,i grew up working on 86s and 88s at a one transport leeds, all i ever saw was home made bunks made by the drivers, never saw a factory one ever :open_mouth: i thought some was kidding me on.just shows how wrong you can be    keith

did the bunk kit come with curtains and rails  ,or just a bed

Hey Phillip. You have a great Project here. my family ran a few 6 wheeler 86’s in the late 70’s and early 80’s.We have a few F86 parts including Grille, Rear corner window and other bits and pieces. we are up in northumberland. PM me if you are looking for anything in particular. Dan

Hi I started on the drivers side at the weekend as you can see from the photos it is worse than the passenger side, with not many reference points to
go from,so had to try and do the same as the pass side. The bottom of the door frame was rotten for about 8 inches up the piller so that was the starting point

Its looking abit more like an 86 again, the door shuts better than it did,the step needs to move up and forward a little but I will sort that when I do the repair to the door hindge area.the next bit will be the floor make new panels and weld in
Thanks for all the comments Phil
