Visiting bruges

i’m taking the wife on a mini cruise to bruges in belguim this weekend as its her birthday - thing is its going to pee it down lol… so I just wondered if there was anyone who’s been before and can recommend some places to visit as just wandering around is probably going to be a wet idea :unamused:

The Halve man brewery. Where they brew Bruge Zot amongst others. Oldest brewery in Brugges and well worth a visit.

Going from Hull?
We went in February and it was freezing. Loads of little coffee/chocolate shops to sit and chill. Plenty of churches/architecture to see. Head for the main square where there’s the biggest tower and there’s little tour buses either open topped horse drawn (maybe not) or little mini buses.
The ferry from Hull was cracking, faultless.

You will enjoy it there.Little old quaint side streets Busy bars.Good night life.I used a fax machine to receive loading details at a hotel there. It was a full load if coffins back in to France.
Uk customs did not stop me coming in.Lefe beer in big tall glasses at 7% abv.Very strong, especialy the dark one like a stout.Lots if silk shops and chocalate shops where they make it and free samples.Have fun.Take the camera.

.
You could always change the ticket for Amsterdam and visit a
museum to improve your culture.

. . .Or take the Missus back to back College :

As others have said, the ferry from Hull is decent, the Four Seasons? all you can eat buffet is actually quite nice and I’m not a fan of those type of places, then up to the bar at the top for some chilled drinks whilst someone plays a piano or sings chilled music.
A very nice experience.

When I went Bruges though it was bloody freezing, December a few years ago when everything ground to a halt, we stayed an extra night too because I thought there’d be so much to do, but I was wrong.
Also, remember that the don’t pay Income Tax, all tax is on everything you buy, so it’s a damned expensive place to do anything, around 5 euro’s for a Stella for example.

We went up the tower, but 50% of it was blocked off for work or something, so our 360 degree view was 180 degrees :imp:
Still worth going up though.

The xmas markets were on when we were there, but they’re really spread out, so take comfortable walking shoes.

Can’t recommend anything to see or do really as my experience of the place wasn’t a good one.

Agree with the towerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belfry_of_Bruges, also a boat trip on the canals (frozen in feb, so we were breaking ice as we went round), and also a pony and trap trip round the town.

Pretty sure it’s not four seasons anymore, changed recently . Same principle just different name .foods more then likely will be same .

Have fun Chris

As above have you thought about amsterdam? Its only 1 1/2 - 2 hour drive from bruges or an hour from rotterdam.

Is Rick Astley a trucker now under the alias of saamon.?

Have been through here but not stopped; I think the locals pronounce it “Brugger”. Depending on the weather, you could visit Blankenberge - quite nice.

Try moules et frites or mussels with chips. They boil the mussels in a broth of onion with herbs or garlic.Gert lush.
Over there they love chips and mayo.Lots of mobile vans sell that.
Lots of ice cream parlours in Brugge.

thanks for the replies  this is literally a one day visit - drive to hull, walk onto the boat, enjoy the facilities - get up the next morning and get on a bus which takes you into bruges, you spend the day there and get back on the bus which takes you back to the boat and you enjoy the facilities again … we’ve done one before to Rotterdam which was a sunday day trip in January for my birthday - which was cold and the bank machines didn’t start working until ten am!! had a look round Amsterdam on a family holiday a couple of years ago, I really love Holland, but never been to Belgium, hence the trip this weekend - always good to have a plan, especially when its forecast rain lol (sounds like the open top bus is going to be a no no)

Bruges is a nice place just to mooch about generally, even if it is raining or cold.

Chips with Mayo are good, and also look for Olliebollen which are little ■■■■■ type things.

The setting for an absolutley briliant film.

Jupiler, chips and mayonnaise and horse steak. Oh and lots of horse drawn carriages…

Love that bit with the fat American asking about going up the Belfry tower…
“you won’t fit up, you’re a fat ■■■■■■■■ or something along those lines, made me ■■■■

Not silk shops.I mean lots of lace shops.Steaks the size of steering wheels.Cooked raw or quick fry with blood in it.Steake blue.
Or moyen:medium.
Or bien cuit:Well cooked.
Steak tartare is raw mince meat with a raw egg cracked open on top of it.
If you eat that you may see it again on the ship going back.
Men from Belguim wear man bags to carry around their gubbins and what nots.
At first it appears to be feminine but after a while you get used to it.

Hi Toby,

At first it appears to be feminine but after a while you get used to it.

Bob Garnett always was a bit worried about you :unamused:

Regards
Richard

Toby, they speak Flemish in Brugge, not French you plank. They also speak English very very well.
