Interested to hear company policies on this subject. At my place it’s ‘you break it, you fix it’. That is, damage caused by the driver where there is no third party or insurance claim involved.

If the driver has to pay for damage, he may as well pay for the fuel and the finance on the vehicle, and get the profit if he doesn’t do any damage!

i agree. if you break it, you fix it.
and if they can’t, or won’t, then sack them.
I`m sure fixing a few paint scratches with a tin of delux emulsion paint will be ok, even if its not the same colour
We’ve got a lunatic on our mini tipper; £4000 of damage 2 months ago when he moved off at a roundabout but the lorry infront didn’t… Bent the bumper upwards and broke passenger step 2 weeks ago, and last week demolished a wall reversing up a tight driveway…which I delivered to yesterday in a 6w in pouring rain and had no problem whatsoever. No idea why but said driver breaks something every week it seems yet has not been sacked. He reaches 65 in June and they’re annoyed to hear he’s not retiring.
Cheers for the thoughts guys. Have been asking a few blokes I meet on sites etc, and it seems it’s pretty standard for tipper/recycling/plant firms.
I can see why people don’t like it, but I think it’s quite a good incentive to look after the motor. We get a bonus for not having accidents too, so it kind of works both ways.
We aren’t penalized; It’d be unfair when most damage is down to digger drivers missing the body and dropping it down the sides, and crappy untidy sites.
Where i work, we dont have to pay for any damage, but get an annual accident free bonus of £250
While I don’t make a habit of damaging my truck, on the odd time that I do, the boss will curse and swear and fall out with you for a day or 2. But thats as far as it goes. Its all forgotten about by the following week.

Agreed, they’ll be wanting you to pay for wearing out the tyres next.
Where I work it’s a case of" we bend em they fix them" If it was any different I wouldn’t work there or would refuse to go into some of the crappy places we have to. Having sad that I rarely damage a vehicle. If drivers cause damage often then dismiss them.
At the company I’m working for at there moment we get £4 a day for not damaging the truck, if we do any damage then we lose the bonus for that month.

You can buy an Isuzu with that cash.
My last job the rule was 3 avoidable accidents in a year,no matter how minor, and you’re out no ifs no buts and anything serious it could be less than that.

No drivers sticking together to get this heinous rule overturned? I thought the job was great in the good old days.

They can retire him - just have to give 6 months notice.

It depended on how much the vet charged to cure the horse.

I thought that law only applied if you were 65 before a certain date?

how bad are the drivers when they need a daily bribe to encourage them to make an effort not to trash the motors
