Vee engines

As the title suggests, this thread is to discuss Vee engines, sixes, eights, tens and twelves, in fact the sky’s the limit.

All comments are welcome, as long as there’s a tiny connection to Vee engines, it is on topic and cannot be complained about. This means that no matter what comes out of Leatherhead, it’s allowed :open_mouth:

Sensible contributions are also most welcome, so over to you lot, what you got

The M.A.N. V10 was an awesome beast in the early 70s around 320/330 bhp and I think it was around 18lts. ( I was only a driver ) and the one I have driven was on heavy haulage rated at 150 tons GTW it had torque converter and either a 5 or 6 speed box column change but it pull anything anywhere. It became quite popular with the boys from the emerald isle with a 13 speed fuller box as they could get to Dover in a shift :unamused:
cheers Johnnie

P S I am not sure but it could have been a joint venture with Mercedes as they also had V10s out around the same time

What could be better than the Rolls name on a V12.Petrol or diesel it sounds just as good.

The new f1 v6 doesn’t sound as good as v8 :frowning: lol

way back in the mists of time when i was an apprentice mechanic there was a lot of ex army plant in the quarry . most of it was powered by the good old ford v8 . of course , anybody who was anybody drove a ford v8 pilot . the abuse those engines took was incredible , the gearbox usually gave up the ghost first .

Iveco had a couple of Big V’s, the early 420’s had a bit of a heat problem and if they got to hot they used to seize on the back pistons, but they got that sorted out on the 480’s which were very delightful to drive. Bags of torque, and very tunable, my Mate from Foggie had one that would spin the wheels inside the tires when it was loaded. Very funny as it instantly got rid of all the air in them, but that cost him a lot of Lira and us half a day waiting for a tire fitter at the Napoli toll booth.

I helped build an SD dust cart to do the world truck speed record for the Star Newspaper, (aka Truck Stop News) it had a Big Merlin in it, which sounded very nice.

We also had a Bull nosed Commer monster truck ( White Dragon ) with a Maggie V10 in it which was pretty rubbish.

Jeff…

That FIAT V8 is the same engine, just in different states of tune, naturally aspirated at 330/350hp, twin turbo’d at 380/420hp and intercooled at 480/520hp.

I had both of the big ones and it is a hooligano (this was also my nickname at a firm I worked for in Bassano del Grappa) :sunglasses:

My list of Vee engines starts with a 6 in a 2540 Actros, then various Merc V8s from 1625s to an 1838. Scania V8s 420 in a 142 and a couple of 143s, one a UK unit, the other an Italian wagon and drag, a couple of 450s and a 460-144. The two IVECOs and two V10 Mercs, one a LHD 2032, the other a RHD 1632.

The best of the lot were the two from Italy, but the best lorry of them all was the 420-143 I had, in my opinion, the best lorry ever produced

Hiya. here,s my Vee engine play toy, the V10 man was nice but not this nice

So Dan, was your V12 born in Stafford or Shrewsbury?

Andrew.

Don’t know ,but I used to deliver piston liners to Perkins stafford from Gkn at sheepbridge .i know that if it had Rolls Royce on the rocker covers it would be worth very little.

Ha ha, very good! Do you know which model it is?

This one had a 380 in it.

420 in this

420 in this as well

This was my favorite 480 ■■? with a Road Ranger box. It was done over in Italy by a bloke that knew a thing or two about Iveco Tuning. Going by other trucks I’ve driven since then it must have been on the top side of 550bhp. But it was still very good on fuel.

Loading lead out of a big shed in a very small village in Derby-shire for Adana in Turkey, to a factory that made wheel weights.

I’ve always regarded Vincent-HRD and Vincent single-cylinder and V-twin cylinder engines as attractive and unusual looking motorcycle engines, with their individual pushrod tubes and round covers for part of the rockers, and so on. Is that Vincent a Black Shadow?..or a Black Lightning?..or a Rapide?..whatever? Phil Irving, the designer of the Vincent motorcycle range, was looking at a design drawing of the single-cylinder Comet one day in 1936 and was inspired to create a 47 degree V-twin cylinder engine - that’s another unusual aspect of the Vincent V2-cylinder engine. The later Vincent V twins, those that were produced in the post-war years, were 50 degree V twins.

Perkins,Stafford, was originally Dorman Diesels,Stafford, and were taken over by Perkins in 1994. Dorman made a range of diesel and gas fuelled engines.

They would sound even better with the correct ROLLS-ROYCE marque name (not just “Rolls”) on them

Scammell Commander,Rolls-Royce CV12 Diesel-engined,6x4 Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive,52 KB 83.Ex-British Army:-

I can’t remember the name of the place in Derby-shire were the lead factory/mine was, but I can remember I had to go through a very tight village to get to it.When I was coming out one day some of the locals had deliberately blocked the road with their cars. I eventually had to get the police in to sort it out. I can understand why they didn’t like trucks going though there but as the lead mine had been there since before the Romans, they should have done their research before buying their trendy cottages.

That twin steer went pretty well and hung on good on long drags. Kim wasn’t afraid of peddling either, we were running to up the Frazers early one morning and by the time I had got out and payed the toll I could see her pulling up the last climb.

Andy the Viking from Leicester ( total Iveco anorak ) did the mid lift conversion, and was our roving mechanic. He could talk all day by only using swear words, which was quit funny as the bosses dad was a big god fearing Christian.

We used to do a lot of stuff out of Castlefranco, Treviso and Cittadellla, Did you ever load out of ■■■■ at Marocco??

Jeff…

No I never had the pleasure, I’m self sufficient in the ■■■■ department anyway

Used to load out of lots of places around there, I went to or through most of the towns in PD and VI, from right up on the Austrian border to the A4, we used to go as far east as Monfalcone and Pordennone. I was on top of a V8 too every time except the first trip which was in a 2800, although the V8s were German and Swedish and not home grown.
