No certainly not this will not be a normal safety or mechanical defect recall it is as a result of a deliberate attempt to deceive the customer.

Vehicle recalled for this problem? Well let me see now, that’s a complimentary equivalent compliant vehicle while mine is off the road, and additionally either this replacement vehicle delivered to and collected from a location and at a time of my choosing, or £500 per day compensation for the inconvenience of taking the vehicle to the dealership myself.
They will remap the software, you are not going to get a new car. You will end up with a car that is worth a lot less when it comes to trading it in or selling it, every car that has been subject to a recall loses a good percentage in value.

That is what VW would hope to be able to do. However if subsequent testing establishes that either advertised performance or fuel consumption is adversely affected then the rectification will have to go a lot further than that. AFIK there had been a lot of hype that these vehicles did not need certain hardware to meet the emission standards in the USA, should that hardware now need to be retrofitted the physical problem will be a lot more involved.
I can see loads of Yanks making claims against VW due to their lung and respiratory problems what with the claims culture over there because basically they have been allowing cars out on the roads spewing loads of ■■■■ out that can cause these sorts of problems when they shouldn’t have even left the factory
I think I heard somewhere that the emission levels without the software were 11 times the levels that are allowed may have heard it wrong but I’m sure that is what was said.
This is really just a logical extension of what has been going on for decades, with cars, bikes and other vehicles set up from the factory with “flat spots” etc so that when tested (using the prescribed test procedure) they would fall within the prescribed noise/emissions limit.
Our new Skoda has that 2litre ea189 engine…and it’s in a very low road tax bracket due to the low emissions !!!
Damned if I want to pay a fortune in road tax , we bought it as it was in a low class.
Sale of gods act…Not fit for purpose possibly ? Money back ?
Time will tell .
Germans being underhand?
Don’t let that bellend ’ Bach home ’ hear this, he will be in floods of tears.
these schemes are only ever thought of for one thing only, how much money they can screw out of drivers and companies, they sit around a big table thinking how they can sort problems out regarding vehicles and then say,i know lets charge them such and such amount to come into London, might as well get some more cash out of them to pay for our golden handshakes when we retire, thats my opinion on it
Any one know how long this fiddle has been going on ? As I have a 2010 Passat with a 2 lt TDI.

^^^^^^^ This. The only surprise for me is that people are surprised by it. I honestly thought it was common knowledge. For years I’ve been taking track bikes to the dyno doctor to get the engineered “flatspot” out so that the engine breathes as it was designed to.
Does anyone seriously think the EU (German ruled, nay dictated) is going to in any way seriously penalise a major part of what keeps the German economy supreme?

VW have stated that Passats from 2012 onwards are affected - not sure if that’s US-only or worldwide.
This is the first phase of shifting everyone back over to petrol. In the early 2000s CO2 was the big bogey man and diesels were incentivised. In Europe just over half of cars sold are Diesel. In the US it’s 3%.
Now NO2 is the new bogey man and Diesel is not quite the wonder fuel the EU thought it was so now we’re gonna be incentivised to move back to petrol before the inevitable switch to electric cars. Wait till car drivers have to start using AdBlue. They’ll soon stop buying Diesels.

Already happening. Saw one of the office folk follow me round to the fuel and adblue pumps in his flash new Audi. Whilst I got some fuel he started to put adblue in his car. Of-course thinking this guy was two sandwiches short of a picnic, I wandered over to offer my services of “You know thats adblue, not diesel right?” Turns out, its supposed to have adblue, he got so confused when it asked it to be refilled first time since he bought it he took to back to Audi to get them to do it!
Given the mpg discrepancy between cars and trucks I bet they can probably go thousands of miles before it needs refilling.
Still, if the government don’t want you using Diesels, and they’ve pretty much stated now that they don’t, they’ll just magic up an AdBlue tax.

Ahh, now I remember, this is why I had my turbo diesel car remapped!
Well worth the money!
Thanks for that info Roymondo, I think it makes me feel better
I’m getting my 730d remapped soon but cant do the Passat for some reason which also uses Adblue.

Adblue has been used on many diesel cars for a couple of years now. It doesn’t seem to stop folks buying them. The Adblue tank only needs refilling every few thousand miles - sufficient in most cases that it won’t need refilling between routine services.
They’re already talking about adding on another charge for Diesels to enter London on top of the congestion charge. They also talking about creating congestion zones in the other big cities like Birmingham and Manchester. The Diesel charge won’t be far behind.

Heard on the news this morning that it’s more than likely almost every car company has been at it and this could indeed be the tip of a very big iceberg. It did say that almost every diesel car could be recalled at some point if it’s found out that other car company’s have been at it.The big question then will be, can those cars be modified to meet the standard or are diesels that bad that they had to revert to a software fudge. Can we really see London raising the LEZ limit? I don’t think so, the Liberals will be in uproar.
Will they ban all VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda/MAN and Scania outside the M25? Can’t see that happening either…
Interesting times ahead.
The London LEZ doesn’t apply to most cars, except for a few 4x4’s and pick-ups, so you can in theory drive the dirtiest most polluting family saloon into London.
