Why? I am currently piloting an R580 whilst my 6 pot is away. It’s a nice bit of kit for sure, but why would you buy one? This won’t do anything my 6 pot can’t.
If yr across the 62 daily, frieghted, scotch most of the time then maybe yes. Just my thoughts, but looking for the answers. Don’t see the need.

You need to turn the stereo down & get yourself in a tunnel Rob, then you’ll know the answer to your question
Old boy I know swears by his 10 year old v8. Says it’s bullet proof, reakons 9mpg and pulls better than anything. 6pots don’t do as much and break easy.
The thing V8’s do better than straight 6’s is drink fuel. Unless your running heavy all the time that trip through the tunnel with the window open and the radio turned down is a luxury you can well do without !!! Check out the price of the go juice. regards Kevmac47.

So true ,for some people it’s like a badge of honour v8 this v8 that not knocking the truck tho, nice moter but don’t mercs do a v8 much more refined, the other prob with a v8 is the weight penalty payload etc , when I bought my Merc they had a v8 for sale as well but I declined and went for the 460 v6 more than adequate for my job and gives reasnable fuel returns correct me if I’m wrong but doesnt the v8 Scania require ad blue aswell
For the same reason as someone who has just driven past me when I went for the paper this morning. A Yank Unit of some make or model and I have no idea what. I only know it was illegal to be running with an empty 43’ flat due to length, but that’s another story. The idiot ‘had’ to use every gear and much volume to accelerate away to be sure everyone could benefit from listening to his ■■■■■■■ straight through stack combo.
I can appreciate that a V8 on long heavy work is less stressed and will most likely have a lower ‘full life’ running cost but I would reckon 90% are bought purely for pose factor (with or without curtains halfway across the window).

I find that a slightly odd question from someone who has spent tens of thousands on accessories for a truck that, at the end of the day, won’t do anything a plain white standard spec motor can’t…

I wouldn’t like to bet on that if someone decided to try a 580 + de rated/governed to around 400-450.
As nmm says there are times though when the extra fuel is worth every cent.
Having 700bhp is all well and good but if you only achieve that in a +/- 200 rpm band it is as useful as a chocolate tea pot, you would be better off with 400 BHP across a 1500 RPM band.
A larger engine or “V” may give you that torque over a wider rpm range compared to a flat 6 and be therefore more economical and less stress on the engine
However the deciding factor will always be the driver and his right foot any engine that provides high torque across a wide band will drink fuel like Rikki on a night on the beer if the GO pedal is pushed, the idea is to let the revs die down and let the torque take the load, keeping the engine in the top end of the RPM band will simply ■■■■ fuel with limited return
A V8 will provide returns if you use the power to haul the load not accelerate quicker than anyone else
A V8 allowed to lug down and use all its available torque will be as good, as its inline counterparts if not better on fuel and far less stressed
One thing that may come into more over is residual value. I remember being offered a V8 scania at something like £30 a week more than a scania 124-470 Griffin edition as the truck was doing Dunstable - Neuss and not mont blanc I went with the 124 and never regretted it but serious I bet after fuel was taken into acount there might not be much in it ?
I’ve never had a V8 scania but im told they can be quite forgiving at the pumps something that my FH16 isn’t ! When I can find a decent value FH13-520 I having one

Funny thing that, all Scanny jockeys tell you their motors do ‘‘11.5 mpg all day’’ , yet when Comical Motor put them round their regular test route the results are within +/- a few decimal points of the rest.

Isn’t that what Fly Sheet had, its fuel consumption compared to an older FH nearly broke his heart.

Yeah the ones with the curtains pulled across the windows and the chicken with rabies decals all over it will tell you it does god knows what to the gallon despite the fact they seem to drive it flat out in every gear and blip the throttle on up changes.
I used to drive a 143 450 on landfill and it done about 6mpg.
Having run my V8 for 18 months now, on bulk haulage, carrying to farms, around the north west and Wales, i am seeing a fuel return of between 7 and 7.8mpg, it took me a little while to “learn” how to drive a V8, using the low down torque, its just so much more relaxing to drive than a 6 pot, it is about 200kg heavier than my 124, but with a fixed 5th wheel, alloys, no retarder, i am usually 15 to 15.15 tonne on all the bridges i use.
Any scania benefits from a top end set up every 12 months, and i replace my air filter 4 times a year, due to the dusty environment i work in.
My truck was remapped by John at Scan-tune, he set it up to a spec i wanted, and you cant beat the noise of it either.

Trust you to start talkin mpg kev… hows retirement■■?
hi all, feel i need to reply to rikki,im on my 8th v8 scania ,now running a 620 on containers, have always been told never never let a v8 lug 1200,1300 revs half a split and wind it back up to 1500rpm.the straight sixes you let lug down .regarding fuel just fueled up today tank to tank 7.8 thats 14ft 6in box and nailed to the floor.can get 8.0-8.4 if weathers good.regarding the dreamers who reckon 9.0mpg out of a v8 ,they must have left the trailor somewere.
