Use of fog lights

highwaycodeuk.co.uk/fog.html

Lets try this direct from the Highway Code. Take note, beware of other drivers NOT using headlamps.

No, let’s go with the relevant law (which is also referenced in those Highway Code rules).

Requirements about the use of headlamps and front fog lamps
25.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle which is fitted with obligatory dipped-beam headlamps unless every such lamp is kept lit–

(a)during the hours of darkness, except on a road which is a restricted road for the purposes of section 81 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 by virtue of a system of street lighting when it is lit; and
(b)in seriously reduced visibility.
(2) The provisions of paragraph (1) do not apply–

(a)in the case of a motor vehicle fitted with one obligatory dipped-beam headlamp or a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination fitted with a pair of obligatory dipped-beam headlamps, if a main-beam headlamp or a front fog lamp is kept lit;
(b)in the case of a motor vehicle, other than a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination, fitted with a pair of obligatory dipped-beam headlamps, if–
(i)a pair of main-beam headlamps is kept lit; or
(ii)in seriously reduced visibility, a pair of front fog lamps which is so fitted that the outermost part of the illuminated area of each lamp in the pair is not more than 400 mm from the outer edge of the vehicle is kept lit;

I have that as 40-love. It’s the turnips turn to serve.

Fair enough, I think we have different ideas. I have always used dipped headlamps in foggy weather but obviously in severley reduced visibilty fog lamps as well (very rare)
I still reckon an awful lot of drivers use foglamps wrongly and unnecessarily.
Here is another theory which I agree with…

We will probably get banned for keeping to the subject. :laughing:

What do you think about this then?

I note that the article linked to clearly states in large, bold type “Don’t forget: Fog lights will only work when your dipped beam headlights are turned on, so make sure you do that first before driving in fog” which is incorrect - all that is needed is for the sidelights to be switched on (and additionally, in some cars, for the ignition to be switched on - which is a given when you are actually driving the thing).

My word theres a lot of fuffle about nothing.

I was on the M1 in my car earlier and caught up with a Stobart who in broad sunny daylight had his rear fog lights on and it didn’t bother me one bit. No mirth, no dedicated thread, nothing. I just carried on with life.

My thoughts:

  1. It’s the Sun
  2. Like yourself, they quote Highway Code rules as being the law, rather than referring to the law itself.
  3. It’s the Sun - do they really care what the law says as long as she has ■■■■■■■■ and a nice smile? (yes, I know that’s a tired old joke, and they don’t actually have ■■■■■■■ birds on Page 3 these days :slight_smile: )

Yet you still felt it necessary to tell us about it :wink:

Haha funnily enough (and sad as it sounds) when I saw it my first thought wasn’t angst or mirth or fretting, it was actually this thread :laughing:

Don’t get me started on driving with front fogs on with side lights.
Its compulsory to drive with the rear fogs on between October and March though.

Having just glanced through the posts I can see you are one of a very few who have given a proper response.Good on ya pal.
What about a kids section where the ones with a mentality of under 10 can congregate and throw their toys out of their prams all together. :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:

Best leave it there mate

Actually I think you’ll find you can. One of My best friends is a very talkative opinionated pig called Mr Constantinople. He takes the FT daily, along with the Pigging Chronicle. That’s in addition to Bertie of course

Pigs are pretty smart.
