What you need is a new boss. What a ■■■■■ Tell him if he wants you in a uniform he can afford it.

If you stay 5 years it will be worn out anyway and won’t be worth 50p. He’s a bell end mate.

Really I’d say he was a sensible bloke, not so sure about with holding money but nothing worse than seeing A) current employee walking round town in the uniform you’ve supplied that!
B) even worse ex employee walking round town in the uniform you’ve supplied

Workwear & particularly logo’d workwear is very expensive, would you want to kit an employee out with clothing that he treats like ■■■■ cause it’s free!! Putting a value on things usually makes people look after items more carefully! The boss isn’t doing it to make his drivers look pretty, he’s upping his game to keep in the game!

Some drivers are some of the scruffiest mother hubbards about, you know the sort with egg down his shirt, your the first thing your bosses customer sees, customer thinks here’s another ■■■■ that can’t find his mouth!

To the OP, if you don’t like it leave there’s plenty more to hop in the seat on Monday morning!

I got my drivers to sign out what they had taken along with a few guidelines like don’t wear round town or even worse in the pub! It’s bad enough seeing a food manufacturers employees in the pub but a transport company!! Also if any things not returned they get it stopped out there last wage packet!

Jeez! Talk about biting the hand that feeds! Another thing to the OP if that’s your worse grip about the job, I should crack on with it, I’m sure you didn’t mind the week in hand your first week you started!

The Wages act 1984, states he cannot take monies from wages unless prior agreement is made … I have to agree with him though he is going to give you clothing for free as long as it is handed back … FFS, how much will you save on wearing personal clothing … ? if it rips give back the shirt ask for a new one!

also once he gives you the uniform you can claim £80 per year cleaning so you are actually making money out of your boss making you wear uniform.

but being short sighted you just see him deducting monies he actually will not unless you want to be sad and keep an ex employers clothing.

you haven’t lost anything!!! he is holding it from your week in hand money thats all so if you don’t hand it back if and when you finish he has the right to keep the £50 out you last wage packet which is your week in hand money, a lot of companies do this. i personally can’t see a problem with this, not being funny why make a big deal out of it unless you don’t hand it back you won’t loose

Don’t know if it’s still the case but ASDA used to keep 10% of your pay for the first 13 weeks you were there. I was told it was to pay for uniform over the years you work there.
Never had to pay for it anywhere else.

Cant re use it anyway

over 50% of the jobs I have ever had have required a company uniform.
One in particular included shirts ties jackets trousers overcoat and a hat, the rest were usual workwear with logos.
I have never been asked to pay a surety or anything like.
It’s his uniform, as is the truck you drive, if he wants you to use either then it is his expense.
Only you can decide if it is worth the hassle of fighting him and £50 is not a lot.
I don’t know what would be the situation if he went bust regarding getting your £50 back.

your missing the point completely why row over £50 quid when he calls the tax man and they give him £80 for cleaning what he will chucking in with his normal washing so straight away he is £30 quid up on any loss plus his own clothes are not ruined!

Everyone is assuming that the OP means that the deduction will be made when he leaves, that is not what he has said necessarily. He has only said the money will be held out of his week in hand. The OP may be upset because what he really means is that a deduction is being made now - out of his coming weeks pay.

If that is the case he is quite right to be annoyed, he is then to all intents and purposes, lending his employer money.

Easy tell him to keep his uniform and you keep your cash, problem solved!!

I personally think it’s a load of bollox paying for your own uniform tell him to stick his job and find a decent company to work for

Time to tell your boss the truth, he’s a knob and a cheapskate

At company i work for, if i leave before such and such time i have to pay it back. :stuck_out_tongue:

Uniform cost money he may have in he past given uniform to drivers who have not returned it upon leaving so boss out of money & sorry but in the 80’s when money was ok but in this day & age can a company afford it

May be he would like a better image & if/ when you leave hand uniform back you get money back simple

Then you claim for washing your uniform against your tax then tax code goes up so you pay less tax simple so you will gain as you wont be wearing your own clothes so saves you money

I was never any good at maths but 20% of £80, I’m pretty sure it’s £16. The tax man gives you tax relief on £80.

As for paying to wear the companies uniform, no ta, If i’m gonna be a walking advertisement then it’d be for a decnt company.

What use is secondhand uniform to a company, i certainly wouldn’t wear someones old gear :open_mouth:
