They’re just not interested in driving trucks.It’s the same when I’m out and about on my narrowboat, I’ve probably seen 2000+ other boaters, both owners and holiday hirers. I’ve seen one black man, and one family of Asians on other boats in that time, everybody else has been white. Not necessarily English, you see lots of Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans on holiday boats and for some reason every other hire boat on the Llangollen canal seems to have a family of Norwegians on it.
It comes under discussion on a canal forum I visit and the general conclusion is that there is no hostility or discrimination involved, just that the ethnic minorities don’t have the any interest in British post-industrial heritage and so choose to do something else instead.
The Norfolk Broads are the same. Been going for years and I can recall one Asian family and as far as I recall, no black folk whatsoever… Sure they do go, but there is certainly very little interest.

Ive come accross a few black truckers in my time, but only one asian(who as it turned out couldnt even opperate his tacho. Then again he was agency as well…)Ive seen quite a few women truckers as well. Like most of the male truckers though they are all middle aged+.
You see a lot of black and asian bus drivers however. In the WestMidlands Id say its at least 50/50 white and non white.
Its also proving to be more popular with women. A chief reason being it can offer short flexable hours that can fit around the demands of family life. The crap wage doesnt matter either as it gets bumped up by working tax credit.

In the last year I’ve noticed one female and one black truck driver. Every single other truck driver I’ve seen has been a white man. When you walk down today’s streets it feels like we’re a dying breed, but there seems to be an invisible barrier between the general working population and an HGV steering wheel. I notice the same effect if you walk off the streets and enter a museum or art gallery or anything to do with our country’s history. There’s an invisible barrier or force field that only indigenous folk or the odd Asian seem to want to cross. What is it about trucking that puts the other races off? I live in the East Midlands where you rarely see a white woman with a white child so it’s not like I’m in one of those isolated little patches where we still predominate. I’m on the M1, M6, M42, M50 each day and see hundreds of truckers thru the week and the demographics of truck driving are clearly at odds with the world ‘out there’.Well I’m female and white, but to me this observation of colour and gender specifics in truck drivers is just that, an observation. Colour and gender divides are now old and outdated…things are changing fast, but what matters the most is whether that driver can do the job professionally.
