of course it is dear

They’re just not interested in driving trucks. It’s the same when I’m out and about on my narrowboat, I’ve probably seen 2000+ other boaters, both owners and holiday hirers. I’ve seen one black man, and one family of Asians on other boats in that time, everybody else has been white. Not necessarily English, you see lots of Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans on holiday boats and for some reason every other hire boat on the Llangollen canal seems to have a family of Norwegians on it.
It comes under discussion on a canal forum I visit and the general conclusion is that there is no hostility or discrimination involved, just that the ethnic minorities don’t have the any interest in British post-industrial heritage and so choose to do something else instead.
The Norfolk Broads are the same. Been going for years and I can recall one Asian family and as far as I recall, no black folk whatsoever… Sure they do go, but there is certainly very little interest.

Yes it’s interesting, I went for a walk along a canal with a black woman once and she told me she’d never done anything like that before. I asked her why not and she said ‘black people don’t go on walks’. I also asked a different black woman this year why they don’t go to museums or art galleries and she said ‘because we ain’t interested in any of that ■■■■’. I went on a guided English Heritage walk in London once and made the same observation to the guide. He was shocked at my observation, even tho when pushed he admitted he’d never had a black person go on the walk. I’m sure there are exceptions but generally speaking our nature and ancient culture is of little to no interest to them.

the above is so not true. iv ben asked on several occasions by black girls if id like to go for a walk with them.
and they were fit looking, must be all that walking.
I delivered to a firm in 2003 ran out of a dingy old warehouse in Manchester run by a young Asian bloke. Import/export business. He ran 2 Scania 4 by 2 units too. Was moaning to me about the price of fuel.
I know quite a few young Asian blokes flying in UK. It was considered a good profession to go into by their parents. Their siblings are doctors (as usual). Think they regretted not going down that route

Importing/warehousing is necessarily tied to haulage so I can imagine the boundaries blurring - that makes sense.
I knew an Asian who intended to train as a helicopter pilot too come to think of it.
The only British truck driver I’ve met was in Pennsylvania,US, he was black, polite, with excellent English. Very nice man, we chat for a while, he had moved recently in US with his wife and kids and said he felt more welcome in US then in his native UK.
Is there racism in UK, I don’t know, but I was a bit of surprised so to speak. I remembered him because by his language and manners he reminded me of how refined Europe(UK in this case) can be.
After reading some comments here on the forum about Eastern Europeans I don’t doubt there are racist, but every country has them, racism doesn’t know nationality.
P.S. The guy that taught me how the drive truck was from El Salvador and barely spoke English, but he was a hell of a driver. Dressed like Che Guevara
I’ve seen quite a number of african drivers but probably only a couple of asians who were wearing turbans so i would summise they were sikh. Not sure on the sikh religion but I think with many asians who are muslim truck driving would not always be a suitable job if they follow their religion strictly as they have to pray a number of times each day. I think they may also need to wash or shower before praying as i came out the showers the other week at a services and there was an asian guy with a prayer mat rolled under his arm that went in after me. Or I suppose they may just use the shower room as somewhere quiet for their prayers. The fasting for Ramadan would probably be difficult with this job as well… I was told off a friend that you also don’t see many asians farming, and he said this is often because in their homeland there are many poor families that have a farming background so it is something they leave behind…maybe in their homeland truck driving is seen as a similar kind of thing.
I have often wondered why many own their own businesses though, even if its a one man band. Is it down to the opportunity to own something 100% their own, whereas this may not have been possible back home.
That’s a fantastic point about the religious strictures, altho there are plenty of sausage roll gobbling lager swigging cultural mohammedans out there.
Farming is the last and only industry in the UK (apart from the monarchy) that is still hereditary. Not something I agree with, but every single UK farmer I’ve ever seen in real life or on TV has been as white as his father and his father’s father. How many non-white full-time tractor drivers/farm hands are there in the UK? That has to be pretty close to zero.
I expect to be shouted down, but look at this example. Asian taxi driver works for local firm, all Asians, and is officially paid a 30 hr week or whatever is the minimum for claiming housing benefits, tax credits, free healthcare etc. In reality he works 60/70 hrs whatever and gets the extra in cash. All the drivers do the same, result! For them. Local tax offices probably know what goes on but are too ‘scared’ to probe to deeply.

Impossible to prove, pay for everything cash it cannot be traced, keep it away from the bank, and live modestly (no fancy cars and Caribbean holidays) easy.

I’m in Basford, kids here don’t talk ‘black’ and it’s still a hugely white majority working class area. I think you’re being totally unreasonable with your claim most
kids here talk black but you might live in radford or the meadows which would explain a lot
Have you even got kids?

Yeh.You hear that crap all the time on the telly. Wtf is that all about exactly, why imitate a foreign accent.
As for supposedly sounding ‘cool or street’ I just think it sounds ridiculous and bloody annoying.
Do they talk like that when they visit their gran, or just when they are with their mates.

I live in the East Midlands and I haven’t seen a black man since 1992.
Is that 'cause they haven’t let you out of the home since then?

Been like that for years in the meadows, st anns and radford areas.
White kids like this are referred to as wigga’s.
I’ve never seen ethnic minorities visiting museums or any heritage centres, until I took a steam train ride and encountered two black gents at Cheltenham race course station.* These two were dressed in proper Great Western train driver and fireman outfits. Maybe they were ex Black and White Minstrels (never heard them say “hello dare” though)?
*Glad I didn’t meet them hanging out near Kings Cross station.
Well I’m off for my usual saturday full English, it’s got black pudding on, is that still ok?
