UK poor pay question?

You wont earn that amount at Stobarts. They had this pinned to a trailer at Truckfest this weekend.

Who he drives for and what his hourly rate is,can make a huge difference, especially if its a NON haulage or contract job.
Unless you know, the comments on here are only guess work, because they are trying to compare with what their own wages are.

Good to see that Stobart pay the absolute minimum they can legally get away with for holidays.

Where do I sign up at those rates?

This is the thing with driving jobs in general though. We tend to think we are well off because we earn more than the poor sods on minimum wage, and earn a relatively good wage by putting in 55 to 65 hour weeks. Reality is though, some folks earn that money with more sensible hours. They are the ones sitting outside pubs with our partners, whilst we are still at work.

Corrected that for you

it is possible, a fair few lads who drive for me often send invoices of £950+ into me (this almost makes me want to go back driving). so yes as a ltd driver its fairly achievable, paye he is doing well.

It’s not ‘■■■■■■■■’ Why would I post something that I don’t really give a toss about ? He has a very secure job with a good union, he works for a national and very large company, he gets proper overtime rates like double time for Sunday nights plus shift allowance and works every Sunday night. As some have said it is possible, I can only think those of you who don’t believe it are either very jealous of him or refuse to believe there are still proper jobs out there.
He is in no way a liar, what would he gain by telling me his pay ? it was just mentioned during the conversation, he wasn’t bragging or showing off … OR LYING !
If you look hard enough you can still find good employers. The job he has doesn’t have any effect on me, I earn a lot of money for the USA, I have no interest in what he earns, I was just pointing out the real job situation, don’t settle for poor pay.

It’s THIS ^^^^^^^^^^ type of work that has “fallen away and collapsed” since the credit crunch. I made reference to it in my earlier post.

What we all want to know NOW - is IF you can still get the above TODAY and WHERE does one need to go?

Who cares what anyone else earns? I don’t know or care how much other drivers make every day, week, month or year, I don’t get any of it. I’m happy getting what I get for what I do. As for working weekends, these days I wouldn’t do it for any amount of cash.

Yeh good point mate. I decided to cut my hours back.
I’m still tramping but only doing Tues to Sat lunchtime.
A bit less cash but a 2 and half day weekend every week at home. More to life than knocking your arse off doing 70 hours a week in a bloody truck I’ve (finally :unamused: ) decided.

thats because like me billy years ago we made a good few quid out of driving, today’s lot dont have what we had, just simple over time rate after 8 hours would be a big help to many who drive these days.

all the changes that have happend slowly in the driving game over the years have resulted in the state it is today, hope you have brushed up on learning to speak polish billy as if your still around in another 5 years you will have to pass a polish written test as part of the cpc the way its going  all to earn the huge amount of 8 or 9 quid an hour flat rate

i can not believe stobarts have been paying drivers 7 quid odd an hour ? what the hell is up with these drivers that they would work for such low amounts ?

dont tell me your one of those drivers billy ? as i certainly hope you value yourself more than that in this day and age ?

Still banging on about the poles DP? Well you’re consistent if nothing else. As for learning polish you southern shandy bashers think we speak it already.
You can relax as we are on a lot more that that, I walked out of an interview last year, port of Tyne, when he told me I would be getting £7:99 ph! And he thought that was decent. The thing is there are plenty drivers new to the game so they take what’s offered to get a foot in the door, we’ve all done it at some time. Unless daddy owns the company there’s very few that get plum jobs at the outset.

It is the supply and demand issue as always, if there are plenty of vacancies then the rates rise and vice versa. Where I live there are virtually no vacancies and therefore the pay is poor. A case of if you want a driving job you either take it or find another occupation.

When I enquired why a company was located twenty miles from their nearest customers the reply was that there was no competition for drivers and therefore they could pay less.

Thanks you  … You have actually mentioned his very company.

I get this crap working here too, I work for probably one of the best companies in the USA, I get a good minimum weekly wage and extra pay on top, other drivers I meet will ask what the job is like and I try to avoid telling them how much I earn because I always get the same reaction if pay is mentioned … “No way, I don’t believe that”
“Ok, so don’t believe it, I am not really bothered but you asked and I told you”
Unlike most US companies I don’t sit around waiting for backhauls or reloads, 95 % of the time I return empty to NYC, even if I delivered to Nova Scotia or Toronto which can be a two day drive each way. The vast majority of companies will have you sitting around for hours or days unpaid, mine pays every hour of waiting or delay. My company also pays the highest rate per mile.

£550 per week is possible but look at the hours you have to do.

The one major problem in this country is drivers do not and will not stick together. Can you ever see drivers in this country doing what the French do - we moan about it while they do something about it. Face facts, the drivers in this country have no backbone.

Correct me if I am wrong but I understand there is something happening in Germany whereby a “proper” minimum wage is being set for a drivers wage based on a living wage and not just a minimum wage.

Who is said this for you about Germany. There some people work just for 1500 euro per month. There in one company different people work for different rates and people have absolutely different money and this not just for drivers.

And not easy said what drivers have average per week.I work in some company and start 1200.my shift just about 10-12 hours.I never taked time or oversleep in the bay or … Another drivers taked sleeping time,as different route different money. In this company some drivers work just 10-12 hours per day, some 12-15 per day,so 100 quid defferent every week ,5000 per years.

What’s the question?

I’m good friends with a neighbour who earns around £2k a year more than me. When I go out in the morning, his car is still on the drive. When I get back from work in the evening, his car is already back on the drive.

I’d be lying if I said this didn’t get to me a bit sometimes after a rough day, but then my job is a lot less involved than his. I have no real stress at work (most drivers have no idea what real stress at work is), I spend hours with my feet up & when I finish I switch off from it completely… no emails lingering over me, reports to finish off, worries about an important meeting the next day etc. etc. The guy sits in front of his laptop for a few hours everynight before bed getting things ready for tomorrow.

What I’m saying basically, is that I made the choice to do a semi-skilled job and accept fully that I have to spend more hours out of the house than most to earn a decent wage. Having dabbled in a ‘proper job’ in the past with my qualifications, experiencing clients breathing down my neck etc., i’m just not interested and value the complete lack of stress I have in my life. Do not buy into the idea that everyone else is in beer gardens every night completely switched off from work like we are after work.

Spot on post. I drive a desk in the week and it is constant hassle and confrontation with awkward customers and (yes they are not all perfect) unreliable hauliers.
I drive part time at weekends and the toughest bit is getting up early and deciding what to buy from Greggs. This not meant to be demeaning to drivers, I think it a very physically demanding job and it does require concentration to drive safely day in day out.

I dint do my dcpc for the above reason after dealing with office hassle all week the last thing I want to do on a Saturday Is drive a truck.
