A grand a week?! ■■■■■■■■ that would put him on 48 grand annually then minus his tax and n.i your looking at 45 and the average salary for a HGV driver in the UK is just 24 and a half…
LIBERTY_GUY:
This is the thing with driving jobs in general though. We tend to think we are well off because we earn more than the poor sods on minimum wage, and earn a relatively good wage by putting in 55 to 65 hour weeks. Reality is though, some folks earn that money with more sensible hours. They are the ones sitting outside pubs with their partners, whilst we are still at work.
Absolutely spot on.
I aint sure about the grand a week thing, although it would be nice
It has got to the stage where maxing out only pays a decent amount you can live on, and maybe not quite as much as it should in terms of inflation, and on a wage to cost of living ratio. So some guys think they are well off, and making ‘big money’ and ignoring the hours they put in to make it.
In a lot of industries you would be on time and a half after 40 hrs, where as a lot in haulage are on a rate straight through. However wages have increased in the last few months in most transport companies. Whether they have increased enough is another argument.
Desypete makes a couple of good points, especially the naivety of the ‘Look at me I’m a trucker’ stars, who willingly will work for a low wage, as it is some kind of ■■■■■■ hobby to them. these guys certainly do not help the situation.
mac12:
He may do but why would a company pay him so much when there are so many drivers who would do it for half that amount.
And a huge amount of them are on here moaning and whingeing about how poor the rates are and how many hours they are having to do to make a wage.
Is your mate Winseer ?

That would equate to a weekly wage of £470 week?? To get an average that would mean all those drivers who typically earn over £550 week which is more of an industry standard (irrespective of hours) balancing out with an equal number of drivers who would earn less than £390 week. Perhaps it’s just me, but don’t think a company would have many takers for a job that paid less than 400 notes a week, so don’t know where that 24.5k average figure comes from?

I’m good friends with a neighbour who earns around £2k a year more than me. When I go out in the morning, his car is still on the drive. When I get back from work in the evening, his car is already back on the drive.
I’d be lying if I said this didn’t get to me a bit sometimes after a rough day, but then my job is a lot less involved than his. I have no real stress at work (most drivers have no idea what real stress at work is), I spend hours with my feet up & when I finish I switch off from it completely… no emails lingering over me, reports to finish off, worries about an important meeting the next day etc. etc. The guy sits in front of his laptop for a few hours everynight before bed getting things ready for tomorrow.
What I’m saying basically, is that I made the choice to do a semi-skilled job and accept fully that I have to spend more hours out of the house than most to earn a decent wage. Having dabbled in a ‘proper job’ in the past with my qualifications, experiencing clients breathing down my neck etc., i’m just not interested and value the complete lack of stress I have in my life. Do not buy into the idea that everyone else is in beer gardens every night completely switched off from work like we are after work.
It’s not ‘■■■■■■■■’ Why would I post something that I don’t really give a toss about ? He has a very secure job with a good union, he works for a national and very large company, he gets proper overtime rates like double time for Sunday nights plus shift allowance and works every Sunday night. As some have said it is possible, I can only think those of you who don’t believe it are either very jealous of him or refuse to believe there are still proper jobs out there.
He is in no way a liar, what would he gain by telling me his pay ? it was just mentioned during the conversation, he wasn’t bragging or showing off … OR LYING !
If you look hard enough you can still find good employers. The job he has doesn’t have any effect on me, I earn a lot of money for the USA, I have no interest in what he earns, I was just pointing out the real job situation, don’t settle for poor pay.

i have seen an add for jobs going at b+m retail the wages range from 27k to 40k in speke, liverpool.
i do know this company goes through drivers like a bad case of diarrhoea, not many seem to stick at the job including the polish and other nationals. so i dont know what is wrong with them to work for ?

If you think about it though, how many other occupations have a dedicated agency purposefully trying to extract money from their daily toils? There aren’t many jobs where you go out to work and could potentially end up with ‘fines’ from a self financing organisation that seems to make up many of its own rules to suit a given situation?

Wow these hourly rates sound soooo good, Oh hang on lets just add tax and stamp to that for being self employed…Yep I’ll stick were I am thanks Agency is great when busy and a long holiday when the other 9 months come around.
No disrespect Buddy but Agency drivers are renounced for talking the talk and some drivers listen and regret it, I don’t good on the lads doing the Harry Enfield “Loadsa Money” impressions. I’m happy were I am in guaranteed full time pension paid employment

Agree 100%.
I get paid a good wage for what is effectively sightseeing with the odd hour of “real” work thrown in. At the moment, I’m parked on the cliff top near Brighton under a cloudless sky, waiting to play with the Hiab, having spent the last hour bird-watching (feathered variety), and drinking tea.
Okay, I’m away all week, but there’s no way I could earn anything near my present wage doing a 9-5 job, even though I’m a very experienced mechanical engineer. And even if I could, what job would pay me to see the whole of the UK, whilst indulging in my hobbies of wildlife photography and bird-watching? If I’d known in advance I was weekending down here, I’d have put the scuba gear in the wagon and booked a day out on one of the local dive boats!!
Yodel gone from Crick about 3-4 years ago.At Stobart not all shift long.to many shift just 10 12 hours.but if work for ltd company can earn about 1000 before tax
