UK poor pay question?

Correct me if I am wrong but I understand there is something happening in Germany whereby a “proper” minimum wage is being set for a drivers wage based on a living wage and not just a minimum wage.

Not sure - but I don’t think the Germans are doing that. My understanding is they have introduced (or are introducing) legislation to make it a requirement for all drivers working in Germany to be paid the German minimum wage, regardless of where they are based.

A grand a week is do able…but you pay A LOT of tax

Is that a choochoo wageslip there?

Nope, that’s class 1,working 5 days/6 days with NO nights out but lots of early starts, driving this…

Looks like Faccenda smelly job that one. I did it about 25 years ago on the old Volvo wagon and drags. They had just started trialing a trailer and Handbag (Pete?) was the first driver on it. I think it had a Moffet on the back.

June 1994 was made redundant at Federal Express, started at Faccenda the following Monday and quit two days later, terrible pay and conditions, went to the nearest travel agent and spent some of my redundancy pay on a trip to Morocco and Fuertaventura.
At Faccenda the first day was spent standing around the yard and being told to walk around looking as if I was doing something, then after 6 hours I took a load to Sainsbury’s in Basingstoke, had an argument because I would not go inside to help, next day was exactly the same with the same argument, came back to Brackley and told the night supervisor to fill the tanks himself

£550 per week is possible but look at the hours you have to do.

The one major problem in this country is drivers do not and will not stick together. Can you ever see drivers in this country doing what the French do - we moan about it while they do something about it. Face facts, the drivers in this country have no backbone.

Now I know UK pay has deteriorated but I was making over 600 quid a week when I worked there in 1999, has pay dropped that much ?

No pay hasn’t dropped that much if you avoid the usual suspects, there’s thousands of all flash no cash jobs out there just as there always was, and an increasing number of drivers who don’t want to do any work apart from sitting on their back sides and getting someone else to put their loads on and off.
It’s still the case that unionised jobs pay better, some won’t have it but they tend to be people who don’t work at unionised places and presumably believe as gospel the bullshine they hear daily sitting on their ample arses at RDC’s for hours on end.
As has always been the case, specialised work pays well especially if there’s scope for lots of damage, and own account is still the best all round work both pay and hours wise.

It’s certainly not impossible to clear over £1000 a week if you are LTD company. I know a few that clear over 1K Every week, except holidays.

Drivers pay has not really gone up here in the 15 years I have lived here either, my company pays the same weekly guarantee as they did when I started, it was a huge amount then and is still more than most companies pay, they have increased the pay per mile but then you just do less so you still get the same LOL

far to much for me my rent will go up

I agree although where I work isn’t unionised they are paying decent money but it’s certainly not glamorous or flash motors.
It can be dirty smelly and you need to be able to think for your self.
Works out 840 a week before tax for Monday Friday 6-30 16-30 and alternate Saturday morning but we get the same wage every week no nights out.
Doing boxes and rdc work is never going to pay top dollar unless you max your cards as it requires less effort and skill than more specialist jobs.
Own account jobs will be always better as it’s not got to make a profit.
I’m based not far from fords at dagenham and them blokes are on a brilliant number but it’s real dead mens shoes
