People keep mentioning Google Maps.

Well my mobile is a steam powered brick, so no bloody use on the road, secondly does the Google Map have bridge heights?

Get a new phone Juddian, preferably one that doesn’t have a coal bunker.

Google Street View. Never mind bridge heights, you can count how many bricks the bridge is made out of if you want to.

The problem being i use my phone as a phone and its brill, the number of people i speak to daily who use the latest smart phones which can’t keep the signal is laughable.
Plus each head of steam lasts up to 2 weeks if i use the phone daily, on standby it will last a month, my Mrs’ poxy iphone is always on charge.

Nice thought mate thanks, but i’ll stick to a push button A phone (or push B to get your 4d back)…the youngsters won’t have a bloody clue  …and my trusty bridge height maps, only got another 5 or so years (if we’re spared) no point in changing now.

I did however use the original Trafficmaster YQ unit for a number of years, that was brilliant for the job, simple to use on the move too, sadly anything simple that can’t be monitored or used in evidence has to go.

My kids dragged me into Century 21 with an up to the minute phone and I love it now, it does everything, I’m on it now in fact.

The down side is it aint too good at phone calls :open_mouth:
I do a lot of work in remote areas so can’t get signals, a lot of the time.
That’s network coverage you may say.
Ok fair play. The thing is my work cab phone is an ancient Nokia on the SAME network, …works every time
Explain that one, had phone checked over and it’s fine.

Google Maps on your phone.

Bang up to date. Traffic in real-time. Satellite imagery if you need it. Street View if you need it.

+1, you don’t even need to input an address you just zoom in on the area you are looking for.

No offence intended, but a one time buy for 10£ is lost within 6 months, a satnav can be updated for free every 3 months. One is on paper one is on a screen. And its much more versatile than an outdated paper map. I han hundreds of paper maps in old days and they filled 2 cupboards, now I have a sat nav which takes less space than one map book. No contest.

Can’t agree mate, 6 months? :open_mouth: …my low bridge map is from around 96. (have you and me had this conversation before, it seems familiar) I don’t need total sat nav reliance, I use a mix of experience, knowledge, common sense, a bog standard 6yr old car sat nav, and the aforementioned map. Total about 100ish quid since 96.

my hand me down map from 1988 still does the job

Philips Navigator Truckers Britain 2016 due out on 3/3/16

I think I’ll go for that one. If I’ve passed test by then.

Out of curiosity are we any closer to finding out what a ■■■■ is?

I know everyone’s been assuming a satnav but what’s got me confused is he was trying to decide between a ■■■■ and a mapbook then ended up buying a CB.

I’ve got a suspicion that it was a wind up all along.

well i think a ZB is a Zebra…now if you use that to deliver goods instead of a motorised vehicle…it can work wonders and is the same statistics as a pack horse only thats a PH, but you could also use a DK, which is a Donkey but carries less weight, the only advantage i can see is the reluctance of having to check heights…

Ok back to post…i used to always use maps ( as most of us did ) and often called into the local estate agents to clarify the correct way to my delivery. I use a Sat- Nav now but just have a highways map, you know, main roads/motorways…but i would say they are a godsend if used correctly…ie…if its trying to send you down a narrow lane…go past it…dont …turn into…the same with bridges…look at the heights, ( all drivers should know the height of their vehicles ( except stobart ) sorry…so if you keep your wits about you, watch the signs there shouldnt be a problem ( and i have never had one ) but one thing i always do when in the town i want…is to turn the radio/cd down to give my concentration a better chance.

Can’t really add to what’s already been said but hey this is the internet!

I mainly use a sat nav and don’t have any issues with it either in my car or truck.

That said I always carry a paper atlas as I have never known one to run out of battery, freeze up or otherwise decide just not to work. Paper doesn’t crack in quite the same way as an LCD screen either.

Best to have a backup…

.

Also, if you’re asking directions with drivers of a …higher age range… show them a map and they will tell you exactly how to get somewhere.

Show them a [zb] and they will look at you weird because stuff like that was frowned upon in their day

I started driving in 1965 and the only maps I had to start with were the free local maps that you could get from petrol stations.
Never used a sat nav but over the years I did use the sun if it was visible to head in the general direction.
Anyone driving to London east from Bristol in the early morning will have the sun in their eyes and again going back late afternoon as the sun sets in the west.
I drive the car a lot in Portugal where they seem to think that minor junctions in the middle of nowhere do not need direction signs . The sun shines most of the time and has got me going in the right direction many times.

zb is a satnav but I called it something different tho.

using my phone as a satnav, that just wont work as its only a bog standard phone for calling people.

maybe im too tight to buy a satnav but I got a phillips mapbook instead, which does the trick!

but cheers all for all the suggestions much appreciated.

Would you believe it my bloody sat nav gave up yesterday I can’t use letters on the right of the keyboard, so as long as I am going to a place that does not begin with G. O. W. H. P. or X or has any of those letters in the town or street name, I’m ok

Made me realise how often I have come to rely on it :unamused: , and ok, I admit I am missing it.
So back to old school map only and asking directions :unamused:
Will get a new one at weekend…

I know some of you would have got a sicknote for it

I do recommend buying a good road map as the batteries dont wear out and if you spit tea or coffee over them you can still use them
also they give a better overveiw than sat navs screen so you can instantly see where your options lie not just blindly following your robotic guide used in conjunction with sat nav and google phone maps/ street veiw planning routes are a doddle
