Turkish Frigos
There were lots of Tonkas that used to have a picture painted on the side of them like this .
Hi Mushroomman,
Sorry, my english is not good.
Translation;
The Tonka drivers used to paint pictures of the villages that they came from on the side boards.
But they dont do it anymore, apparantly there arnt even any Tonkas in Turkey anymore, they’re all driving new trucks.
The good old days of Bolu, Tahir etc are gone…sadly.

Danka schoen fur das Herr Smitt .
I often thought that could be the reason as I remember seeing more of these Tonkas in the remote areas, especially between Ankara and The Black Sea Coast. A lot of the times you would see them loaded with people so they were probably used as the local bus service as well.
Strange isn’t it Gavin, when we were young we used to hate them and now we view them with affection.
No Tonkas in Turkey eh lad it’s a different world today
.
Regards Steve.
Nichts zu danken Herr Mushy.
It is funny eh !! they used to be like land crabs, and we used to struggle to pass them. Late at night the firey glow would come from the exhaust aswell as the tone…Imagine driving a Tonka !! no sleeper cab, AC, or other creature comforts like we had, sitting for days in queues the same as we did to exit Turkey for destinations East. I once saw an old long nose, daycab MAN Tonka in Dover believe it or not!! it had proper lights and tyres. I dont know how far he would have got once he got out of the docks.
Imagine being sentenced to drive this>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
or this, its even got UZUN ARAC on the back, maybe I should post it on the other thread aswell.
Ive got a cracking photo of a six wheeler, I will scan and post sometime soon.

One night in Dover Eastern Docks in the early 80’s I ALSO saw a red, long nose M.A.N. Turkish Tonka, six wheeler day cab with high sides and a tarp over the load. It was about February or March ( it was definitely not in the summer ) the two drivers were sleeping on the top of the load and they were parked up at the back of the lorry park against the sea wall.
Of course this truck caused quite a bit of attention from the other drivers and we asked one of The Penguins how long they had been there. He told us that they had arrived in the early evening and as they were carrying a full load of cow hidesH.M. Customs wanted to do a full search in the morning. I did see the two drivers who were all rugged up wearing old over coats and furry hats and they looked like the type that you often saw up in the Turkish mountains.
I felt really sorry for them, they looked very scruffy, tired, dirty unshaven, unwashed but then again I seem to remember that there were one or two Brit drivers like that in those days.
Regards Steve.

. Pull the other one Gavin
. You will be telling me that GULE GULE had a depot in most of the towns next
If you look at photo 13 on this page, the two red and white Bedfords, didn’t they have a depot in Nottingham .
Marshalla of Nottingham seems to ring a very old rusty bell , maybe The Red Fox heard of them in days gone by.

Talking of Turks in day cabs, used to see a few of them in Italy in old bonnetted Internationals or Macks, as you know the yank trucks have very narrow cabs so arbi used to have a hammock under the trailer, not a bad job in the summer, but can’t have been much fun in winter
They still make Tonkas in Turkey, that’s where Merc make the Axor, bit more modern than nailing an axle on the back of a D1000, but if you listen to the whinging about Axors on the UK Driver’s forum the Turks still know how to make a bad lorry
