Trucknet is doomed

No such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer.

Snarley:
I read the posts every day, but lately it is doing my brain in…

  • I can’t reverse
  • what is my spreadover
  • Tacho regukations
  • bla bla bla
When I was 17, I was sent to marseille, on my own in a transit. I bought a map, and did it.
I now drive a 44t artic, when I get new jobs, I sort it,

WTF is wrong with the new generation of drivers.

Oh, I don’t know - that looks like a pretty bloody stupid question

Many years ago I was told there is no such thing as a stupid question, the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask and drop yourself in the ■■■■, I live by that today, if I don’t know or I’m unsure of something I ask and wouldn’t hold it against any body that does the same.

bowser:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA … snarley old chap you’ve been caught out … i love it when this happens … :grimacing:

Here’s another:

Snarley:
Yesterday I shunted my trailor due to tight access in yard.
I drove to my 1st drop 40 miles away.
Yep, I forgot to connect !! Drove all the way just on the shunter button.
No lights or abs or indicators

I AM DUMB

Yes, yes you are.

This is why lorry drivers are not thought as professional anymore, when you got the likes of him on the roads.

Youve answered it yourself, you are by virtue of this thread asking for advice and opinions, if you knew all the answers as you imply why ask for advice and post it on a forum

thelorryist:

tachograph:
I don’t know when you started driving but when I started there was no internet or mobile phones so you learned from other drivers.

I doubt anything has really changed as far as the questions are concerned, it’s just that now people ask the questions in open forums rather than talking directly to other drivers face to face.

Most young or new driver probably won’t ask other drivers for advice in case they a met with an attitude like this?

And with the Internet being the quickest way to access information, why sit reading a book of regulations if you only want to know one or two quick things? It’s easier to ask on here and have the information given to you quickly and in a manner that you can understand.

I completely agree with you and that was the point I was trying to make, the way we communicate has changed over the years and the way we seek help has changed accordingly.

The only real difference is that more people now the questions and answers so it probably looks like things have changed when in reality they probably haven’t changed as much as it looks.

It’s also a fact that thanks to the Internet more people now see when we make ■■■■ of ourselves, as the OP is now discovering

Live with it it’s been like this for months.

People seem reluctant to TAKE advice nowdays.
I wonder if that’s got anything to do with it?

I sometimes have “out of date” trouble when returning to an area I’ve not been to for years. Roads have all changed, new one-way system built, old RDC has been knocked down and re-built a few hundred yards away… Stuff like that. Never had a trouble with a “new low bridge” being built though!

It only confuses me on these occasions because I NEVER use a Satnav. Road maps seem to go out of date too damned quick these days too. I have a 2010 one, and it stays packed away because the estates on it are completely out of date with what’s on the map.

Fortunately, I’m hourly paid not salaried, so if it takes a bit longer first time out 'cos I don’t know my way around an unknown estate, then so be it.
Sometimes being a smartarse will just result in getting your own pay cut effectively!
(Does ANYONE say "That was easy boss… Finished an hour ahead of schedule too!.. (Boss:) Ok, you are being booked off at…)

As for younguns… The piece of advice most often ignored (me to them) is get out and have a look when reversing into a tight space. :unamused:

Snarley, you have gone very quiet  :stuck_out_tongue:

What do you expect to read about on a trucking forum? Herds of wildebeest? The hanging gardens of Babylon… ?

Asking for advice, no matter how stupid you think the question is, is the right thing to do. I have often been on some sort of training course and felt secretly relieved when someone else has asked a question that I was thinking was too basic to ask!

Question…i have bought 50 shades of grey, how can i practice some of the content

Seriously…when i first started in this industry, everyone was there to help each other, and thats how we gained experience…by asking ! i must agree that there are some ridiculous questions being asked, when i wanted to know things about a company, i would phone them up, when i wanted to get directions, would drive to the edge of town, then call into a garage, or better still, an estate agent, thats the hard way of learning, so i suppose its better to ask someone on here, who can give a direct route, it does save time, although i never would, and with the modern technology, theres sat-nav and mobile phones, can even phone the customer if you have the number, but at the end of the day, it does help to ask.

Is it the digi-tach thing, I’m always in a rush no time to chat or offer advise etc the T/M or planner is on my case 24/7 all for the national minimum wage?. good advise from Winseer get out and check it costs nothing! do’nt worry about the “big wheel men” making fun of you we all had to start somewhere :exclamation:

You shouldn’t be allowed on the roads.

But what else are you going to do? Even McDonald’s (who are known to employ people with special needs) wouldn’t touch somebody as stupid as you with a ten foot barge pole.

Go and lie down before you hurt somebody.

I hope this helps.

Bump… I want to hear a reply!

Been in this game since the 1980s. You remember what it was like then? At 22 years old with a fairly fresh licence someone gave me a truck and an address in France and said off you go.

It was a hell of a way to learn and I was one of the lucky ones who managed, many didn’t and are working in an office somewhere now. I’m sure I bent the ears of many an old hand in various truckstops across Europe.

I am always willing to pass on knowledge however ‘silly’ the question, just PM me.

as long as drivers need to ask questions there will be a trucknet
as long as drivers need to offer advice there will be a trucknet
as long as drivers need to MOAN there will be a trucknet

and as drivers moan for ever there will always be a trucknet
