Comart ran some smart trucks, F88’s and F10/12’s. I think they had connections with Thor Transport (Stoke) and maybe Moorlocks.
Pics of those to follow nex few days, watch this space…

Comart pulled tilts for Patricks at one point. Bit ominous, but ill tell yous that story another night when ive found the pics to go with it.

Oh no…im slipping back a few years with these older pics so what about Lowes then? They did mostly NAFFI stuff to Germany, but i saw them in Italy occassionaly.

which one do you prefer■■?

These Borderers have the “official” Atkinson sleeper cab, although they were built by a coachbuilder in Tonbridge as a conversion on a finished vehicle, and not actually a factory job.

The factory house magazine featured an article in 1971 on the first one built, which was on a 38 ton 6x2 Atkinson Leader for Lowe. The writer accompanied a Lowe driver on a NAAFI trip to the UN in Rome. IIRC the driver was called Les Stubberfield.

I’ve mentioned it before that Berrisfords only ever did one M/E trip to Teheran, then went back to what they knew best,Italy.
I remember a guy on for Browns af Leighton Buzzard named Roy who had a Mack doing M/E.

A bloke i used to work with a guy called Bob Day used to be on for Brown’s, rates it as the best job he ever had.

It mght be the same bloke, he used to have a Peterbilt, used to run Italy, Bulgaria and Greece with it, although if i remember righly it used to break down with immense regularity!

keep em coming ash…

TruckerAsh:
well dun SPARDO: ive heard of Cheveralls but got no pics. sorry mate you’re the weakest link tonight

I’m the weakest link  :open_mouth: :unamused:

I’m not the one who hasn’t got a picture of Ian Cheverall’s finest…oh, yes, I am. :unamused:

OK, so when Ian decided battling for permits wasn’t worth the worry, decided
to get out of transport and rent his yard and warehouse to Whitbread’s for
storage, he had a garage sale of all his equipment and 3 brothers from the
Cotswolds came along to see if there was anything they could use in
maintaining their fleet of log lorries.
They left the sale the proud owners of the whole fleet and the services of Pete
Farbrace from Dover who knew all about international transport who then rang
round all us lot and off we went again.
I got a train down to somewhere near their country farmyard, was picked up
and deposited in a nice hotel to await the transformation of my old MAN from
grey/blue to orange/red in the paintshop.
In the 70 odd years of the company’s history they hadn’t gone much further
than Gloucs. and this wild excursion into the wilds of Italy nearly broke them. 6
months later, now realising why Ian had packed it in, they told me after tipping
in Stoke ‘can you bring the motor back down here in the morning (Sat), only it’s
the last day of the month and we want to reclaim the tax.’ :smiling_imp: ‘we’ll run you
to the station and pay your fare, take it home tonight and drop off your gear’.

Such a nice family firm, shame they went and spoilt it by denying to the taxman
that they’d paid me a week in hand and thus depriving me of a tax break on
it.

So, Ash. C.H.Howse Ltd… Bright orange and red MANs (yes, I know, no fashion
sense :unamused: ). You must have seen us while standing on that roundabout at the
bottom of Jubilee Way.
Or am I to beat you once again and claim a double prize. :sunglasses:

Another Comart photo: Patricks had “trouble” with some of the drivers on Italy which ended with “more than a few” getting the bullit when they returned to the yard one Saturday morning.
Next day, Comart had 4 or 5 units at Kettering pulling Patricks trailers.

truckash great pic there again

tottally agree with neil thread of the year, great pics again ash it was a close one but i prefer the lowes erf to the atki

Truly excellent pics posted by all, keep em coming !!! Does anyone reme, ber Andrews and Bond ? from Manchester ?

well im glad everyones enjoyin the pics…
a slight variant from the English co’s tonight. Heres a few “nice” Irish trucks. GLENMAN, you ready for these■■?

before i started drivin “proper” trucks, i had a transit van doin the whole of the UK and a bit of France and Germany. I guess thats what got me into european.
anyway, on a Sunday morning my mate and me used to take the ■■■■■■ to Watford Gap and wait for all the european boys to come in for a break.
It was very early 1980’s and the “fleets” of motors that pulled in were quite impressive. Curries of Dumfries, Brit European, Bon Accord and Kelly Freight to name but a few.
this photo has to be one of my all time favorites. To get 7 trucks from one firm all lined up!

and heres a brief selection of some other well know Irish outfits, Carna being the only one left running today.

I guess ill have to sort out some “nice” Scottish and Welsh pics next …

fantastic pics there of some old irish companies, do you have any more ? How have you managed to keep such an immaculate collection ?

dieseldave:
I’ve got loads of pics and I’ll happily dig out some more and post 'em, if there’s enough interest…

here you go BuzzardBoy: dug out this crap quality pic of H G Brown Macks. they also ran F89’s and Transcons to M/E.

you being from LB you’d know Peter Roff then? JLS shared his yard but strangly i cant photos of thier kit. have to look harder…

heres one of PR’s finest, closely followed by one of his Volvos. note the headboard. He hated that!!! It HAD to have his name in it. i guess this must have been its first trip before he had time to get the headboard written properly.
Some may disagree, but PR’s a good bloke! He’s still around and into property nowadays. He still uses the old office and his old transport sign is still there.

do i have anymore?..oh yes just a few!!! i used to put all my photos in various “catergorised” albums - all carefully slotted in, but when the shelves started falling down with the weight, i started using filing cabinets. ive lost alot over the years by lending them out to so called" friends" who swear blind they have returned them! Yeah, whatever…
as I said right at the beginning of this topic, you just dont see any of the fleets anymore, never mind the trucks!
I remember the camorardary too. I was broken down one cold wet night (alternator gone). An owner driver stopped, gave me his battery and he took mine on board to charge up. we then ran through the night, with me driving on side lights only to preseve the power. we got back up to Calais where we swopped batteries again. He wouldnt take a penny for helping! what a great bloke, from Leeds I think, pulling a UFO trailer.
you wouldnt stop today! you’d get ambushed, gassed, or kidnapped…

UFO - Universal Freight Organisation.

Ash

Your pics are truly EXCELLENT, i cant believe the quality now, and I cant believe that you have only just found this forum!!! You get my vote for best Post this year, keep em coming…
