TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

No,you passed The Whitehouse before Rheims, you went past the big truckstop near the A/route ( after Rheims) & continued on the old road to Swiss .The land is very flat around there but that village is on a hillock. I would have to look at a map to tell you the next town. The truckstop was not very good so I always timed it from Calais to get lunch at the village. The owner never smiled. I bet he wondered what happened to the no-parking after I left. they never replaced it.

Harry,
I feel sure you will know. Who was the tallish bloke used to run out to Swiss in the early to mid 90’s, called Ian ? A real nice sort of bloke, I think he came from either Cheshire or Stoke. He was also a good friend of young Huey Dunne.

Difficult to place him without seeing his motor,Archie?

hey Archie, and Harry…, ex anglo swisser myself and can remember a nice lad (ex Stevens of Macc I.I.R.C.) called Ian Gilbert ,who around 89/90 time was running a f12 out of Frans Maas Wythenshawe depot…,could he possibly be the man? regds dave

Thanks Dave, yes that’s the chap, as you say a real good bloke. It was just I was looking (dreaming) back over the past and this chap came to mind, I could visualise the man but not his Motor, I knew he was on for Frans Maas because I was on there too.

The name rings a bell but I can’t place him?

Hello! I’m Tony Khan’s daughter… Back in 2008 Harry Baker was looking for my dad (who is alive and well, by the way!). We only just came across this forum last week. Just wondering if anyone still is in touch with Harry as my dad would love to catch up with him. Anyone?!

mushroomman:
Hi Sean, I can’t seem to find that photo of the Zust and Bachmeir trailer at the moment but I shall keep searching for it.
It’s so sad to hear about Colin but give him our best regards and show him this photo which he may of not seen before.

And hopefully this will bring back a few memories for him.

Regards Steve.

sorry to tell you Steve Colin has sadly assed just before christmas…

Hi Superbecks,
I worked with Tony Khan in the late 90’s when we were on for Norbert Dentressange on the a-frame drawbars, originaly based at Heywood the we were all transferred to the Chalon depot.
Got some fantastic memories of leisure time spent with Tony…what a fantastic ‘Camion chef’. (He introduced me to his ‘Hot Chilli Pickle’…which went with everything!!
I wonder if Tony remembers the long weekend three of us (myself, Pete Hilton RIP, and Tony), spent parked by the river in Cavaillon just outside Norberts depot.

Huey Dunne!!! once run with the old man back from swiss in the early 90s. Scania 143 yellow with a green band on it. Hard to keep up with. He must be retired now, very nice bloke. We both tipped at Ciba at Duxford.

Hi Pete.
Are you by anychance the Pete who used to drive the A frame drawbar on the Alicante run for Thomson’s?
All their others were on Kellogs but the lad I am thinking of had iirc a lhd Merc A frame drawbar and left late 90’s to go to Norbert.
If so you’ll remember myself Flipper (Big Dave) Steve Cashmore RIP and Dennis Slater RIP all off Simon McCann’s.

Hi Flip,
Unfortunately not, I only drove the Norberts A-frames. Started in 96 and finished in 2001.
We also did a lot of Kellogs and I remember the Thompsons although the drivers names are along forgotten. But I should now the lad you’re talking about if he came to work with us, perhaps he went to a different depot? The only other Peters besides myself on Nobbys I can remember are the Pete Roberts from Colwyn Bay, Pete Morgan from Morcambe and Pete Hilton who as I mentioned above has passed away. The first 2 were there from around 95 and Pete Hilton started about 98-99, could it have been him?
Pete

Ok thanks for that Pete. I can see him in my minds eye but can’t recall his surname for love nor money.
I’m guessing it would’ve been '99ish he went to Norberts. I know he was driving a Frech reg lhd Major swb with six legger drawbar from Valence when he started and parked arou d Warrington somewhere when he was home. I saw him a few times then we lost touch.
Thanks for the reply anyway

hey, a bit off the road ,but can someone tell me where I can find the threat of Lowe,or can tell me one what happened with them. They were a bit of the first on the continent.
I still remember good, the first I saw were Whitebread and they drove very slowly (of course we did already about 90kph with our Daf’s and volvo’s). And on the old Ostend Brussels motorway still a bit smaller and more pourly as the Antwep Liège motorway. And from time to time a jump with you head to the roof  It most have been mid '60’s or a bit earlier, and we looked of course a lorrydriver with a necktie never seen and we smiling we     .
And al those strange makes WITHOUT sleeper. And at one time it were lots of Scannie’s and F88’s, but surprising the Scannie’s without sleeper mostly and not with a Super (turbo’s). But surprisingly no F88’s without sleeper, but yes the first had a sleeper as standard.

Cheers Eric,

Here’s one for you Eric…one of Lowes Atkinson Borderers. They were based at Paddock Wood in Kent but ceased their haulage operation some years ago. I believe they still have storage and wharehouse though.

Looks like clamps holding those boxes on? :unamused:

Hi again Superbecks,
Hope this wasn’t your only visit to this site, was hoping you’d get Tony on here. I know that he always had a camera with him…he must have some great photos taken during his driving days, form the M/E days up to European.
