TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

My dad used to work for J&W Watts of Carlisle, and as a youngster would often go with him in school holidays, I’ve found a few photos off other sites. After Watts he worked for Barrie Robinson Transport (BRT) Newark, continuing on running out over Vivers of Dornock Annan, then on for Robert Burns

I know some of these are more recent but hey!!

adr:
Anyone recognise this? (I don’t I hasten to add) just curious!

Hey, late reply this pic is in Portugal on the old N1 south of Leiria ( Batalha Monastery ).
It was still the pre Orange revolution time.
Only the big money companies could buy known marques as Volvo, Daf and so on.
Other bought in that time new Japanees marques as Nissan,Fuso and so on… after their completly worn out AEC’s,… .

Cheers Eric,

Here a common sight in the '60’s and '70’s.

Hey Harry, nice pic of Frisange Chevron/Texaco station now used by a exceptional crane company, was still nice to see and cross those old borders if you had time. After years if the places were nearly all degenerated it was disapponting to pass along it. But at one time with the coming of round abouts on the continent everything disapeared quickly.
And of course the 3.5 and 7.5 ton signs shoot up as mushrooms especially in Luxembourg but everywhere.

Cheers Eric,

That snap of Frisange was taken a shortly after the A/route opened. The border was closed for trucks so I crossed on the A/route & doubled back-20mins!. The Chevron was owned for years by an Italian guy. He advertised it for sale in Italian papers as soon as heard the new border was opening. A fresh Italian family bought it 2 months before the change. The day the snap was taken I went into the cafe/garage & the young Italian wife had aged ten years. She was heartbroken, they were up to their neck in debt.I asked where her husband was & she said he had a job stacking shelves in town. Looking from France I also went into the first hotel on the left.It was like a silent movie,Grandma sat staring out of the window, the wife sat behind the bar watching black&white TV. One little waitress served the only customer… the whole area was in mourning. I went one more time but stopped going ,too depressing.
Re;The coming of the donuts. I aproached a new ■■■■■ in the Rhiems area & was suprised to see an old Frenchman in an old gull wing Citreon reversing around the ■■■■■. He had missed his turning!

Evocative photo from the 80’s… Scania in France…South of Reims on the old RN44

I used to use the Routiers there on the right regular & park off road where that tanker is parked. One day I turned up at midday as usual & they had put up a no parking sign. I unbolted the disc & put it in the cab & went to lunch. Many years later I sold it on eBay, so in a way, it was a free meal.

And as it is today…  (Click on it to make it bigger, as the priest said to the choir boy!!)

Looks like they sorted the parking out?

The restaurant is now closed Harry…Nice present day shot Bullet…apart from the traffic, not much has changed…

Patron was a weird old geezer, looked like a French school teacher . Black hair with parting and a big moustache .he had the restaurant set out like a class room ,all the tables in straight lines. Food was good tho’.

was that place just before the bit of dual carriageway that took you onto the ring road?
