TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

Nord & Stevens were more or less partners on the Swiss/UK run. Stevens complained that they were supplying all te trucks so Nord put on some Swiss subbies then Stevens drivers complained that the Swiss boys were stealing all the UK work. The Swiss lads hated the ■■■■■■ job. They could make more money running to Spain & no ferries.

Thanks for the welcome folks, I’m only a youngish lad, never been a truck driver for a living but my Dad tought me how to drive using a Daf 95, Ford Cargo and an ■■■■■■ van ha ha . Truck Driving has been in our family for a long time. Dad started out driving concrete mixers for Steetley’s way back in the late sixties early seventies. Then he took a job at Remploy in about 1972/73 and retired there in 2008. In that time he’d started out in Ford D Series, Leyland Terrier, Ford Cargo, Leyland Roadrunner. Then he took his Class One and he got a Daf 1900 rigid but every month the company would hire a Daf 95 artic to fulfil a special order for someone. As well as driving for Remploy he took a job with an owner driver in Bradford called James Pickup. He drove weekends for Pickups running out of Morrisons at Cutler Heights. every now an then he’d land a long distance run somewhere exotic.

hi there,i remember your uncle terry,i worked with him at UFO before he started that air france job with steve cooke(plane trucking)i think i remember that accident was something to do with the vin rouge at the restaurant at le bourget.

in the late 70’s i once did a change over in with terry in poole docks with a special trailer that loaded with cylinders of gas from the ICI,the gas smelled of fish, they could smell it in the docks and shut the whole place down.

Hi there mr.vastly exp, good to here from someone who remembered Terry. I wouldn’t be suprised if the vin rouge was a factor as he liked a drink, very silly though if indeed he did drive under the influence. You will probably remember a fella called Shaun then? He used to do the Air France job too but I think his Daf Spacecab was done out as ‘Plane Trucking’ - I think. I remember one trip to Calais when he took my Dad with him. Terry was having a fortnight holiday and wanted my Dad to cover for him, so off they went so Terry could show him the ropes. It was the first time my Dad had seen Terry’s truck with the trailor on as when he brought it home it was only the unit he brought. Well my Dads jaw dropped when they arrived in London and standing there was a his container trailor that was near on 50 foot long. The very trailor he was expected to drag around France for 2 weeks. Anyway he did the job and loved it.

Hi Kings 260, I can’t remember who’s photo this was  it could of been one belonging to Trucker Ash so I hope that he won’t mind me reshowing it. I was informed that it was Micky Dunston who was driving it at the time coming out of Dover Eastern Dock, Tony Gibbons ( Big T ) drove it before Micky.
Lennie ( Frogman ) Frost ( who was christened by Mick Cosgrove ) was an ex helicopter winchman/ diver in the Fleet Air Arm, Len did a couple of trips to Russia for Dow in the early 80’s to the Lada car factories. Len left Dow and went working for A.C.H. for a while and then came back, before that he was working for Ski International from Manchester doing the Commie Block and for a time he drove for Duckhams Oils.
R.I.P. Len.

Wheel Nut:

Yes. My mate Howard drove one of them, there is more fat on a greasy chip so he was ok. Anyone with a beer belly would never be able to drive them. The seat back was against the plywood

Hmmm, I remember a Howard, but his surname escapes me for the moment.

The drivers always preferred the FL10s that these Eurotrotters replaced. But this conversion (actually by Estepe) did a lot to improve the space compared with the original cab which, by the way, was shorter than a standard Eurotrotter as well:

Never forget working on these at Volvo & Bowkers, they had a pulley fan/belts set up that was a sod to work on as space was limited, the cab had a short tilt ram and it was difficult to get bits for (Non Standard - overnight).

In fact at Bowkers we fitted an old ammo box on each trailer with a fully made up tensioner pulley and belts etc made up inside, so if they failed over the water or down south the local agent had the parts on the job.

I’m sure it was Cyril, who two nobs on a moped, tried to rob him in Barcelona while he was waiting to load, he was cooking up some spuds and stew and they opened his door and put a gun to his leg, Cyril picked up the spuds and wacked one of them over the head with the saucepan, he came in the zona franca where I was cooking up a load of eggs before they went off, we sat and ate the lot while he recounted the story. I’m sure it was Cyril!! I did tell he it was Pesatas the wanted, not Potatoes.
