GREAT STUFF TRUCK RASH I WAS ON THE ROAD AT 21 IN 1979 DRIVING PIGS TO ITALY
FOR G W MARTIN FROM BRANTREE ESSEX WITH SCANIA 111s .THE GOOD OLD DAYS.truckerash:
My time driving in Europe was during the late 70’s and the 1980’s which for me, was…and still is…the best era for trucks, although I guess some of you “older ones” will probably prefer the 60’s with your AECs, Fodens, Guys and the like (never mind).
I worked for E M Rogers, Northampton and began doing Germany, then moved onto mainly Italy with some NL B L and F thrown in.
As you have no doubt seen elsewhere on TN, I like to take “the odd truckphoto or 2”, so as the response to the ones I have posted so far has been good, I thought i’d start a new topic and post more of my pics.
I notice some of you are talking about and asking: “if anyone remembers” various companies such as Martintrux, Hercocks, CaveWood, ECT, Swains, Coombe Valley, Atkins etc etc, so ill look out my pic of these too.
So many of these co’s are now finished. They all had smart, bold liveries which we all recognised a mile away as they came towards us on the Autoroutes, Autostradas and Autobahns. All we seem to see now is a white cab with a sticker on the door. Oh, and a non English speaking driver!
The golden age of truckin is dead!
So without further ado, dust off your old cassette tapes, snap open a Yorkie bar, sit back and enjoy.E M Rogers, returning from Italy: Tea on the Blanc.
L to R; my F12, Mick “big ben” Bennett (now sadly died), Phil Homer DAF.
who remembers ACH from Aylesbury? Formerly Howe European, Mr Fowler had an immaculate fleet…then they were resprayed red!
I though UKON TRUCKING bought out Howe European, I recall when working for Ukon a 290 in Howes colours getting painted in Ukons silver

This pic taken late one night in Dover.
one for all you “cokernies”. McKeller now taken over by Carr Bros, Northamptonshire.
nice pair of Walkers, pic taken south of Paris on route Italy.
and finally for now: to keep all you “non Volvo/Scania fans” happy, a DAF of Hercocks, Leicester depot. Hercocks became Derby White International. Anyone remember them? ill post a pic next time.
if there are any “old” companies running into Europe that any of you want to see, let me know, see what i can do.

Hi everyone,
I am new to here,my dad was a BET tanker pilot back in the 80’s,finished his days there on the 6x4 Flying Foden if anyone remembers her,a definate fighter jet on wheels, prior to that was ERF E10 and before that the white Iveco with straight through pipe that could blow a blue flame when under full power.
Dad answered to the name of Bill/Billy,definately remember young Terry from Leek, although cannot see any piccies of the Transcon, that he had if my memory serves me correctly.
Dad is now residing in Anglesey retired for Trucking, cannot be doing with only doing 56 mph,not in top gear anyway
I will never forget my 14th Birthday in Lokeren,Frikadelle and fries followed by Ice cream and a beer or two
Look forward to hearing from any of his old pals

I used to work for a subbie on shannigans by the name of Micheal Mc something or other in 90/91, he came out of Newcastle Co Meath, i had a flat top F12, don’t remember any other brits on there so our paths obviously never crossed, I was there when they were running their own boat, which was a total disaster. I don’t think it was too long after I left that it went down the pan & the bloke out the office, Joe ■■? set up as Team. The the subbie you are talking about here is Robert Mckinley he is my dad it was indeed jzg 718 and the daf was 8669 ai he mainly had volvos and dafs had a transcon aswel. His brother is nigel mckinley he had mercedes and volvo. We stil live in same place 2day but no trucks anymore hopefully not for to long tho
Well I got that a bit wrong didn’t I, Robert McKinley, I can picture him, just couldn’t remember the name I have fond memories of my time with your dad & JZG was a good old motor, I went all over Italy, Spain & did a couple of Austria’s in it, I picked it up in Le Havre when I first started, went south of Rome & was back in Liverpool Docks waiting for the next trailer before the end of my 1st week
I left to start on Solstor which was an opportunity too good to miss.
Say hello to your dad for me
Newmercman, would this old girl ring any bells with ya?

Hi DD, welcome to the site.
When I was on for Brit European there were a pair of Transcons, when they were new in 1976 one was based at Trowbridge depot, the driver was Dave Prosser.
I had the other one based at Scholar Green, registration PDM 542P.I did 12 months middle east with her before I moved on.
This is her in the desert between Jordan and Saudi.

Yes this was an Ex Comart Vehicle Pat converted it to three axles, original wheels were trilex.
Five of them were imported from Belguim and registered in UK in 1975 original year was 1972.
He stil has it & is in working condition.
That is one tough looking F88, and with a championed history. Fantastic to hear the truck is still around!

here he his doing a spot of site seeing
Is Dave Pritchard still about? I seem to remember him as a right ladies man! I recall once on the Turk/Iran border (Gurbulak) We had both tipped in Tehran and were running back empty to Austria for a load back to UK. An Australian couple who were hitching from OZ to the UK approached us and asked us for a lift. For some reason I didn’t have a passenger seat on that trip, just the ‘box’ it would have been bolted to. So of course Dave was quick to say that he would take the girl as it couldn’t be expected for her to ‘rough it’ sitting on a box. So I ended up with the lad and Dave ended up getting his leg over all the way back to the UK!!
I also remember on another trip running with him and I had my girlfriend with me. He couldn’t take his eyes off her and wouldn’t stop chatting her up at every opportunity. Mind you, she did have a set of overdeveloped ‘jugs’!!
This was 35 years ago so he may now be a happily married man and settled down for all I know. Mind you, a leopard doesn’t change it’s spots, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was still a bit of a Don Juan.

Ron,
Dave was to be seen working around this area over the years, but haven’t seen him in must be 20 years.
He did at one time have a job hauling clay from a local clay pit to a brickworks, something like an 8 mile round trip, great work for an ex m/e man!,in what I believed was his own motor.
I believe he now works for someone hauling cheese in the Nantwich area, what used to be Hollands I think.
I never knew what his marital status got to be.
Like the rest of us, I would have thought he’d be retired by now,but having said that,I retired 7 years ago and I’m still at it!
The other guy in the pic I hadn’t seen for about 30 years until I met him again at the first local reunion a couple of years ago,and the reunion earlier this year.
The Scania 141 ROO 107W was bought 6 months old, I think it belonged to Tanker Bill?
It is Dutch built with carpets, seat belts and sprung cab. Ran on 1200 x 20`s most of the time.
Always good for double figure fuel consumption !
It did Greece for Velos for a long time, as well as Galaxy Caravans from Preston to Spain.
Some of the Lucas International permit allocation went to Ashline Trucking of Chadwell st Mary, who remembers them?
Les Merton was driving when the picture was taken, always nice to wear out someone elses trailer when you got the chance.
Lady Amanda was his wife who sadly passed away last year.

Yep, that’s the old girl, what a motor those old F12s were
I think Ashline had a Daf 220drawbar,pale blue?
Also a 142 intercooler.
Also recall a stupid step frame triaxle tilt with ridiculous axle spacing, rearmost axle too far back like a lowloader, wouldnt go around corners !

Don’t remember the drawbar. I remember he was running ‘tiltainers’ when I first started, (Like a container but with a tilt body) until he realised that we went 19 ton empty with these!
When I worked for him all he had was a 141 in Unitruc colours, a 142 in his colours, and a Merc that couldn’t up hills when it was raining because the air pressure on the second axle was too high! See pics below. (If you look at the trailer behind the Merc, that could be the one you’re talking about. The axles do seem a long way back!
