GREAT STUFF TRUCK RASH I WAS ON THE ROAD AT 21 IN 1979 DRIVING PIGS TO ITALY
FOR G W MARTIN FROM BRANTREE ESSEX WITH SCANIA 111s .THE GOOD OLD DAYS.

truckerash:
My time driving in Europe was during the late 70’s and the 1980’s which for me, was…and still is…the best era for trucks, although I guess some of you “older ones” will probably prefer the 60’s with your AECs, Fodens, Guys and the like (never mind).
I worked for E M Rogers, Northampton and began doing Germany, then moved onto mainly Italy with some NL B L and F thrown in.
As you have no doubt seen elsewhere on TN, I like to take “the odd truckphoto or 2”, so as the response to the ones I have posted so far has been good, I thought i’d start a new topic and post more of my pics.
I notice some of you are talking about and asking: “if anyone remembers” various companies such as Martintrux, Hercocks, CaveWood, ECT, Swains, Coombe Valley, Atkins etc etc, so ill look out my pic of these too.
So many of these co’s are now finished. They all had smart, bold liveries which we all recognised a mile away as they came towards us on the Autoroutes, Autostradas and Autobahns. All we seem to see now is a white cab with a sticker on the door. Oh, and a non English speaking driver!
The golden age of truckin is dead!
So without further ado, dust off your old cassette tapes, snap open a Yorkie bar, sit back and enjoy.

E M Rogers, returning from Italy: Tea on the Blanc.
L to R; my F12, Mick “big ben” Bennett (now sadly died), Phil Homer DAF.

who remembers ACH from Aylesbury? Formerly Howe European, Mr Fowler had an immaculate fleet…then they were resprayed red!
This pic taken late one night in Dover.

one for all you “cokernies”. McKeller now taken over by Carr Bros, Northamptonshire.

nice pair of Walkers, pic taken south of Paris on route Italy.

and finally for now: to keep all you “non Volvo/Scania fans” happy, a DAF of Hercocks, Leicester depot. Hercocks became Derby White International. Anyone remember them? ill post a pic next time.

if there are any “old” companies running into Europe that any of you want to see, let me know, see what i can do.

I used to work for a subbie on shannigans by the name of Micheal Mc something or other in 90/91, he came out of Newcastle Co Meath, i had a flat top F12, don’t remember any other brits on there so our paths obviously never crossed, I was there when they were running their own boat, which was a total disaster. I don’t think it was too long after I left that it went down the pan & the bloke out the office, Joe ■■? set up as Team.

The the subbie you are talking about here is Robert Mckinley he is my dad it was indeed jzg 718 and the daf was 8669 ai he mainly had volvos and dafs had a transcon aswel. His brother is nigel mckinley he had mercedes and volvo. We stil live in same place 2day but no trucks anymore hopefully not for to long tho

I think this may have been your dads MAN Ian Mayor wes driving it at the time for Ashworth Preece from Preston say hello from Gary Richardson. Here is another he will know from his Tara days

I had a spell subbing for DJ International during the 80’s. Heres my old Steyr (poor man’s Globetrotter), having loaded at Como, bound for the UK.

Nice to see the photos of Alan Taylors trucks. I think he used to have a Mack also. I used to know Alan fairly well as we both did traction for GBE and he bought my Globetrotter from me ( HNH 350 Y ) when I bought a Pegasso Troner which was in GBE,s colours, any photos of my old Globetrotter ? ,I did see it about 7 years ago going around Rennes painted orange.

Kerbut: taken a while, but i dug out pic of HNH 350Y

and this wouldnt be your PigsArse Troner would it? H180 KFA.
shouldnt really post it here cuz this 80’s stuff

Woo! I did a fair few miles in H180 KFA before I got my new Iveco K953PBP
So, How many ex GBE drivers are on here?
And whatever happened to Bob Cox, Steve McCloud, oh, so many names…?

Gaz Hunter

I used to drive for GBE about 12 years ago, i can remember one day they give me a Renault Magnum.
Got all my kit in and the thing wouldnt turn over to start, phoned Ferndown and they said “get out of the truck and theres a ■■■■■■■■■ button near the air lines you have to push to crank it over”.Never forget that.
Good bunch of lads, Ian attkins, Geordie, Tooky…loved it.

Hi.Dieseldog6.! No I don’t recall Kevin or Alan but I’ve just put the phone down to Gerry Perry who drove for Dines and knows 'em both so maybe you know Gerry?? We tended to work on the same firm but he’s broke ranks at the moment and is on for MVT car transporters…I do remember De Costa…he was the same era as John Arnett.

John had a place in Curriers Close Coventry doing the Massey Ferguson tractors out of Banner Lane. He also had a warehouse in Rugby for the storage and distribution of the calor gas heaters from spain.

Mekon… Don, nice to see you on here, I used to drive for Dines of Bicester when I lived in Banbury, although we didn’t know each other, you may have known 2 friends of mine , Kevin and Alan Tagg who werer also on Dines, I also did a stint at Compton’s. I used to think that Scania of yours was the dogs do da’s.
John Arnett, now there’s a name from the past, I know I should know more about him, but I can’t recal what!!! age thing I guess.
Do you remember a bloke from Coventry with a 2800 DAF, De Costa Transport, yellow and Blue, used to do Spain back then?
